To make more people care about the river, we made posters and put them up around the neighbourhood. The posters encouraged people ____5____ throwing rubbish into the water. At first, some shop owners didn’t seem ____6____ in our project, but Ms Li kept explaining it to them again and again. “Change never comes easily,” she told us, “but small actions can add up.”
On Clean-up Day, we didn’t leave the riverside ____7____ the banks were completely clean. Our hard work made ____8____ possible for the fish to come back. Some of us even found ____9____ in the shallow water—a little turtle! Everyone cheered.
A month later, the government replied: the factory had been fined and the pipes were removed. This experience taught us that ____10____ young can also make a difference as long as we work together. The river is clean now, but protecting the environment is a job that never really ends.

固定结构make it+形容词+for sth. to do sth.,it作形式宾语;this和that不能充当形式宾语。

Do Animals Laugh?
Posted by Dr Kate White · 3,482 views · 36 comments
We know that animals have feelings. A dog may show fear when it hears loud noises, and a cat may purr when it is happy. But here is a harder question: do animals have a sense of humor? Can they find something funny, just as we do? This week we asked our readers to share their stories.
Sally Blanchard, an animal expert, tells a story about her parrot Bongo Marie. Bongo Marie didn’t get along with her other parrot, Paco. One day, Blanchard was cutting up a chicken for dinner. “Oh, no! Paco!” Bongo Marie cried, and then she laughed loudly. Blanchard laughed too and said, “That’s not Paco.” “Oh… no,” said Bongo Marie. This time, she sounded disappointed. Then the parrot laughed at her own joke.
Science also has something to say. Psychologist Patricia Simonet found that dogs make a special sound—a kind of “laugh”—when they want to play. She recorded the sound and played it back to other dogs. All of them seemed to enjoy it and even started to play with the toys around them.
So, can animals really laugh? Science cannot give a final answer yet. But the discussion goes on—and our readers are still voting!

When I hide my dog’s ball, he jumps around and makes a funny sound. I’m sure he is laughing!

I don’t agree. I think animals only copy the sounds they hear. They can’t really understand a joke.

The Broken Alarm Clock
Tom is a boy full of curiosity. One evening, his father came home with a new alarm clock—small, silver, with two little bells. It rang loudly the next morning, and Tom began to wonder how such a small thing could make so much noise. After his father left for work, he carried it to his desk and took it apart. Inside were dozens of (几十个) small parts— wheels, springs (弹簧) and hands, fitted together like a tiny city. When he tried to put them back, a thin spring jumped out of his hand and rolled under the bed. By the time he found it, he had forgotten where the other parts belonged. The clock never rang again.
That evening, Tom put the silent clock on the table and told his father the truth. Waiting for his criticism (责备) , he went red. To his surprise, his father didn’t get angry. He just took out an old book called How Things Work, “Since you want to know how things work, read this first,” he said.
Tom spent the whole winter with the book. Also, he took apart old items and wrote down the name of every part in a notebook. Little by little, he learned to put them back together.
Now Tom can fix small machines for his neighbours, and people in his building often bring him a broken kettle or a fan. The broken alarm clock still stands on his desk, silent. He has never tried to fix it. “It reminds me how I started,” he says.
Curiosity broke the clock, but it also opened a door for Tom.

Lisa
