The people who called into the help hotlines and domestic violence shelters said they felt as if they were going
crazy. One woman said the code numbers of the digital lock at her front door changed every day and she could not
figure out why.Still another said she kept hearing the doorbell ring, but no one was there.
Their stories are part of a new pattern of behavior in domestic abuse cases tied to the rise of smart home
technology.Internet-connected locks, speakers, lights and cameras marketed as the newest conveniences are now also
being used as a means for monitoring, revenge and control.
In more than 30 interviews with The New York Times, domestic abuse victims, their lawyers, shelter workers
and emergency responders described how the technology was becoming an alarming new tool.Abusers-using apps on
their smartphones, which are connected to the Internet-enabled devices-would remotely control everyday objects in
the home, sometimes to watch and listen, other times to scare or show power.Even after a partner had left the home,
the devices often stayed and continued to be used to threaten and confuse.
For victims, the experiences were often aggravated by a lack of knowledge about how smart technology works,
how much power the other person had over the devices, how to legally deal with the behavior and how to make it stop.
"People have started to ask what to do about this,"said Erica Olsen, director of the Safety Net Project at the
National Network to End Domestic Violence. When it came to discussing the misuse of emerging technologies, she
said:"we don't want to introduce the idea to the world, but now that it's become so common, the cat's out of the bag."
Connected home devices have been increasing in domestic abuse cases over the past year.Several lawyers said
they were arguing about how to add language to the current restraining orders to cover smart home technology
24.What is the problem with the Internet-enabled devices?
A.They give rise to complaints in the help hotlines.
B.They are being employed in domestic abuse.
C.They are unaffordable as newest conveniences.
D.They threaten the market of smart home technology.
25.The underlined word"aggravated'in Paragraph 4 means
A.worsened
B.broadened
C.reflected
D.guaranteed
26.According to Erica Olsen, the discussion of the misuse of emerging technologies is
A.insignificant
B.unavoidable
C.controversial
D.optional
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Officials have trouble drawing up laws to protect people's privacy.
B.Smart home technology has made people's houses unsafe to live in.
C.Connected home devices lead to the increase in domestic abuse.
D.Laws need to be revised to restrict the use of smart home technology.

Have you ever felt the need to have something unique (aka niche)about yourself, something that makes you
stand out from everyone else?
On social media today, there is a growing trend around being "niche. The more specific and unusual your
hobbies are,the more interesting you seem as a person. It's no longer enough to say you like classical literature. It
becomes more interesting if you say you only read authors like the Bronte Sisters. The same applies to everyday things.
Being a coffee lover is no longer just about liking coffee, but about preferring something more mysterious, like
espresso instead of a basic latte
This trend reflects the growth of small communities.People with very specific interests can now find each other
more easily, forming fandoms and spaces that feel genuinely personal. It also encourages people to explore their
interests more deeply.Instead of staying on the surface, many begin to engage more seriously with what they like.In
that sense, niche culture can push people toward growth and discovery.
However, there is another side to this trend. What happens if people don't consider your interests "niche
enough"?For example, maybe you genuinely enjoy reading young adult fantasy, something widely popular and not
particularly rare.Does that make you less interesting?Should you start presenting yourself differently just to appear
more unique?
This is where the problem begins. When uniqueness becomes an expectation,it can easily turn into performance.
Instead of choosing hobbies based on real interest, people may start choosing them based on how they look to others.
At that point, being"niche becomes a way to build an image rather than express who you are.
On the one hand, niche culture helps people find communities, explore new ideas and express themselves more
freely. On the other hand,it turns individuality into something performative. So,the actual question we should ask is
not how unique our interests are,but how genuinely we engage with them. What makes someone interesting is not how
rare their hobbies look online, but how real they are.
28.Which of the following best illustrates being"niche"?
A.David enjoys reading classical literature.
B.Sarah often jogs in the neighborhood park.
C.Emily collects movie posters from the 1960s.
D.Michael drinks a basic latte at a chain store daily
29.How does niche culture benefit people?
A.Motivating serious hobby pursuit.
B.Regulating behaviors of fandoms.
C.Creating more local community jobs.
D.Breaking the barriers between groups.
第6页(共12页)
30.When might being"niche"be insincere?
A.When one seeks a desired image.
B.When people lack real uniqueness.
C.When interests grow truly popular.
D.When social expectations are dropped.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to Stand out Online
B.Join a Niche Community
C.The Dark Side of Hobbies
D.Niche Culture:Trend or Trap

Smell is key to ant life. Each ant has a special chemical on its body that tells others it is from the same group.A
new study suggests that human air pollution, especially ozone ()is damaging these important smells and causing
chaos in ant societies.
Each ant species has a unique smell formed from stable chemicals.Unfortunately, these chemicals react easily
with ozone,a pollutant that has increased due to human activity.Ozone levels are much higher in cities, sometimes
reaching 100 parts per billion, compared to about 10 parts per billion in cleaner areas.
Researchers wanted to see if higher ozone would change the ants'smell and cause attack when they returned to
the group. They exposed six different ant species to air with 100 parts per billion of ozone, similar to polluted city air in
summer. After just 20 minutes, the ozone had significantly damaged the chemicals that help ants recognize friends. In
five of the six species, this led to ants from the same group attacking their exposed nestmates.
Scientists were astonished by how strongly the ants behaviour changed.Even though the special smell was tiny,
it was very important for telling who was family. In another experiment, exposing small ants and their babies to similar
ozone levels made the parents stop caring for them, causing the death of babies.
Ants are vital to our ecosystems. There are about 30,000 species, and their total mass is similar to all birds and
mammals combined. They help dig soil, spread seeds, and clean the environment.Their complex societies can teach us
much.
While insect decline is often linked to pesticides ()climate change, and habitat loss, this study shows air
pollution may harm insects in unexpected ways.Ozone has already been shown to mess up communication between
flowers and pollinators ()and between flies. This research indicates that air pollution may have even wider
effects by threatening the very function of social insect groups.
32.Why did the researchers expose ants to air with 100 parts per billion of ozone?
A.To prove that ozone is the most harmful pollutant.
B.To find out the number of ant species in polluted areas.
C.To test how ozone affects ants'smell and group behaviour.
D.To study how ants protect their nestmates from pollution.
第7页(共12页)
33.How did the scientists feel about the results of the experiments?
A.Unconcerned.
B.Disappointed.
C.Doubtful.
D.Surprised.
34.What can we infer about ants from Paragraph 5?
A.They perform critical ecological functions
B.Their total mass is smaller than that of all birds.
C.They can adapt quickly to polluted environments.
D.Their social behaviour is more complex than that of humans.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly suggest?
A.Pesticides are the main cause of insect decline
B.Air pollution can have unpredictable effects on social insects.
C.The function of social insect groups is easy to damage.
D.Ants are more sensitive to pollution than other insects.

Seven gourds-in Chinese,"Hu Lu"-hanging from the vine on Chen Jin'ao's balcony like the characters in
the classic Chinese animation The Calabash Brothers brought unexpected warmth and soon attracted attention.Since a
visitor shared their photographs on social media, the gourds 56 (transform)Chen's quiet home into a place

name that gradually became familiar to Chen.
The couple had lived quietly since losing their child. The visitors greeted the couple 62 (enthusiastic),
and their cheerful voices gave the home warmth that had long been missing.Instead of keeping this unexpected
happiness to63(he),Chen frequently stepped onto the balcony, answering questions and sharing the story
behind the gourds
However, the noise from crowds disturbed daily life.Local residents therefore put up a small notice,

Madalin Cris,a Romanian-born Londoner in his twenties, was working as a lifeguard at a central London gym.
He was a mountaineering enthusiast and an experienced mountaineer. However, climbing Mont Blanc, the tallest
mountain in the Alps, was absolutely not easy. But for Cris, climbing Mont Blanc that year became symbolic of
something bigger. It gave him a sense of purpose and a"wave of energy"every time he thought about it.
Rather than simply rushing to the mountain,Cris spent months preparing. He trained his body with long-distance
running, stair climbing, and weight exercises to build the endurance needed for high altitude ()He read
books and watched instructional videos on glacier (travel and rescue. He studied the route carefully and bought
the necessary tools-boots,an ice axe,and a rope.
Then in August,Cris arrived in Chamonix to be faced by Mont Blanc.
The first day went well.Other climbers were around,so it seemed unlikely that he'd get lost. The altitude didn't
affect him severely. Then the next day,he started the final push to the top.As he neared 4,600 meters above sea level,
he began feeling uncomfortable because the weather conditions worsened.
The wind was howling, the snow was driving hard, but he was making steady progress.About 180 meters from
the top,he encountered two figures-a British father and son he had met the previous night at the mountain hut
)The father,James, was in his 50s and his son,Matt, was similar in age to Cris. They were roped together,a
standard safety measure for glacier travel.Cris could not see their faces, but he could sense their panic.Covered up
against the wind, they decided to turn back.Cris joined them in climbing down for safety.
The wind hit the three men hard. They moved slowly and then suddenly,James slipped and was sliding
downward. Both James and Matt were in danger.Cris stood in shock for a second.

Listen to the next question. Hi, this is mary, the manager at Henrys. Girl, I noticed your application for a waiter position. Unfortunately, we've already filled all server positions. However, we do have an opening for a host. You'll greet and guide guests to their tables, ensuring they have a pleasant start to their meal. Are you open to that? Thanks for calling. I was mainly looking for something serving tables. I used to bring food and drinks to the customers. I understand, but being a host can be a great experience too. It's a fantastic way to develop your communication skills and get a full picture of how the restaurant Operates. You'll have a similar salary and it's a bit more relaxed. That sounds interesting, but i'm not sure about working alone at the front of the restaurant. I'm a bit nervous about handling everything by myself. especially during busy hours. There's always at least one more host on shift with you so you have support and IT won't . feel difficult in ted in the host position. Raise your hands, please. Wow, there are a lot of hands. Doctors recommend that teens get at least eight to ten hours of sleep each night. However, in practice, many team struggle to make IT. This is often due to a conflict between nature and modern life. During our teenage years, our body clocks tend to move forward. This natural change makes us want to go to sleep and wake up much later. However, as society usually demands we get up early, the key is finding a way to fall asleep earlier. Later on in the lesson will be talking about how stress and screen addiction can also impact our sleep. But first we're going to study the ten, three, two, one sleep role. This means that ten hours before bed, you stop drinking tea, coffee and other energy drinks. Your last meal of the day should be at least three hours before bed. Homework and other work should be completed at least two hours before bed. One hour before bed, you shut off all screens. These tips will help ready your body for sleep and help you drop off to sleep much more quickly. Good morning, everyone. It's time for our weekly health class. It is a great honor to participate in the school winter vacation volunteer activities.I would like to go to the
community to help take care of primary school students
First of all,I think primary school students, who are the hope of the future of the motherland, should get better
care and concern.Besides,I think children are very cute. They are very naive, very lively and very energetic.I think
it is very interesting to be with them, willing to take care of them.
I will make a lot of toys for them to play with, make a lot of food for them, tell them stories and teach them to
sing and so on.In the end,I hope that we can have a pleasant winter vacation.
67.One possible version:
Then, without thinking,Cris jumped into action.Using all his strength,he threw himself forward and
grabbed the rope. The strong pull nearly made him lose balance, but he dug his ice axe into the snow and leaned
back with all his weight."Matt!Help me!"he shouted into the wind.Matt, shaken out of his panic, quickly dug in
to steady himself and pulled alongside Cris.Together, they pulled with all their might, breathing hard.Inch by
inch,James's sliding body slowed, and then finally stopped.
With the help of Cris and Matt,James was pulled back. After James was pulled back to safety,he grasped
Cris's hands,his voice trembling with gratitude."Thank you...you saved us both,"he said.Cris simply nodded,
too exhausted to speak. They continued their slow descent, step by step, leaning into the wind.Hours later, the
mountain hut finally came into view. That night,Cris sat quietly by the window, watching the storm rage outside.
Cris realized that this experience hadn't just given him purpose;it'd given him connection-a story of courage
he would carry forever.
