Richard Feynman was arguably the second best-known physicist after Einstein. But he is not the only distinguished scientist in the Feynman family.
His younger sister, Joan Feynman, was born in 1927 and grew up with him in Queens, New York. Richard would become Joan’s first teacher and someone who helped develop her curious nature, believing her capable of learning all the math and science he could teach her. She would try to solve math problems for the unique reward of getting to pull her brother’s hair and serving as his “lab assistant” at the age of five. For her fourteenth birthday, Richard gave Joan a copy of Astronomy by Rebecca Horace Baker, a college-level physics text, which both taught her about physics and what was possible. She credited it with proving to her that women could indeed have a career doing science.
Joan Feynman would go on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College before she attended Syracuse University, studying condensed matter theory and earning a PhD in 1958. By 1960, Joan was married with two children and she decided to take a break from physics to take on the role of homemaker.
The break was short-lived, as Joan grew depressed from keeping a home and caring for two small children. In 1962, on the advice of a psychologist, she went in search of employment, securing three job offers at multiple institutes. At Lamont, where she worked part-time, Joan began her research into Earth’s magnetosphere, identifying its shape.
Over the course of her career, Joan Feynman made many breakthroughs in furthering the understanding of solar wind and its interaction with the Earth’s magnetosphere. As author or co-author of more than 185 papers, Joan Feynman’s research accomplishments range from discovering the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere to identifying the origin of auroras. In 1974, she became the first woman ever elected as an officer of the American Geophysical Union, and in 2000 she was awarded NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.
“Joan Feynman leaves a wealth of scientific accomplishments, having made important contributions,” said APS CEO Kate Kirby. “Despite being discouraged from pursuing science by social expectations, she persevered, and her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to women who wish to pursue a career in science.”
4. How did Richard influence Joan?
A. By preparing her for subjects in college.
B. By introducing her to the world of science.
C. By teaching her the importance of astronomy.
D. By offering her a job serving as his lab assistant.
5. Why did Joan seek employment in 1962?
A. Her family badly needed her income.
B. Her psychologist offered her a good job.
C. Her domestic role left her feeling down.
D. She wanted to prove women could do science.
6. Which best describes Joan Feynman as a scientist?
A. Successful and wealthy. B. Optimistic and hardworking.
C. Popular and ambitious. D. Productive and acknowledged.
7. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A news report. B. A biography.
C. A chemistry textbook. D. An official announcement.

Scientists think that microplastics from ultra-processed (超加工的) foods may be building up in our brains. What they have found was showed in four papers in Brain Medicine recently, suggesting a possible connection to the rise in mental health problems like depression.
The cover of Brain Medicine shows a human brain filled with colorful microplastic particles (微粒), next to a plastic spoon. This image highlights a key finding: human brains may contain about “a spoonful” of microplastic material. Ultra-processed foods, which now make up over 50% of energy intake in the US, contain far more microplastics than whole foods. These tiny plastic particles, less than 5 millimeters in size, can get into human brains and increase significantly in large amounts.
Studies have shown a link between eating ultra-processed foods and negative mental health. People who eat such foods have a 22% higher risk of depression, a 48% higher risk of anxiety, and a 41% higher risk of poor sleep. The new assumption is that microplastics could be the missing link in this connection. For example, a type of processed chicken has 30 times more microplastics per gram than fresh chicken breasts. Recent findings in Nature Medicine also revealed high levels of microplastics in the human brain, and these levels were three to five times higher in people with serious mental decline. Ultra-processed foods and microplastics seem to damage human brains through similar biological processes, like causing deleterious reactions and stress inside human bodies.
To study this further, researchers suggest creating a Dietary Microplastic Index (DMI) with the aim of measuring microplastic exposure from food. Another paper shows that a modern technique might be able to remove microplastic particles from the blood, but more research is needed. In conclusion, while more studies are required, it is clear that reducing ultra-processed food intake and finding ways to remove microplastics from our bodies are important. After all, as the saying goes, “You are what you eat.”
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By defining a concept.
C. By providing statistics. D. By presenting a discovery.
9. What can we learn about microplastics from the cover of Brain Medicine?
A. They look like spoons.
B. They can be too tiny to be found.
C. They may build up in the human brain.
D. They are primarily found in whole foods.
10. What does the underlined word “deleterious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Harmful. B. Positive. C. Mild. D. Unclear.
11. What is DMI used to do according to the text?
A. Reduce the intake of ultra-processed foods.
B. Assess the intake of microplastics through food.
C. Measure the amount of microplastics in the blood.
D. Boost the removal of microplastics from the body.
D
Keeping indoor spaces comfortable takes a lot of power. About half the energy Americans use in their homes goes toward heating and cooling, accounting for a large amount of their bills and greenhouse gas emissions (排放). Scientists have been working on higher-tech solutions to this problem for decades.
Now materials scientists have developed a color-changing coat that can switch between heating and cooling modes. The coat, which is thinner than a credit card, operates on very little energy and could one day wrap even the most wasteful of buildings to help send unwanted heat out in the summer and trap it in during the winter. The findings were published recently in Nature Sustainability.
The new devices take advantage of a natural phenomenon called radiative (辐射) cooling, which makes outdoor temperatures drop at night and helps cool Earth as a whole. They can switch between high and low heat emission with a simple zap of electricity. The new material starts in cooling mode. Beneath an incredibly thin electrical conductor lies a small pool of water with copper ions liquid inside. In this state, the device naturally radiates heat, cooling the inside of the building. Then, when the conductor layer applies a small electric charge, the liquid copper settles on its surface, forming a thin layer over the water pool. Because copper gives out very little of the heat it absorbs, the device now traps heat.
The researchers estimate that if this technology is applied in a coat to the outside of a building, it could save 8.4 percent of the energy used for heating and cooling in climates that experience a big change in temperatures throughout a year. “It is a really impressive result,” says Yai Zhai, a mechanical engineer at the University of Missouri, who was not involved in the research.
While cutting about 8 percent of energy usage may seem small, if you think about it on a societal level, that could make a big difference.
12. Which can best describe the function of the new devices?
A. Cut Americans’ daily electricity bill.
B. Heat buildings when the weather is cold.
C. Adjust buildings’ temperature when necessary.
D. Cool buildings down to a suitable temperature.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Urgent threat of the greenhouse gas.
B. Working mechanism of the new devices.
C. Ways to release unwanted heat of a building.
D. Importance of the liquid copper to the devices.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards the new invention?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Critical. D. Neutral.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Materials for Environmental Protection
B. New Materials for Trapping Heat and Saving Your Bill
C. New Coating for Both Heating and Cooling Buildings
D. New Coating for Solving Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Vertical (垂直的) farming can date back to as far as 2,500 years ago. The hanging gardens of Babylon are considered one of the first examples of vertical farming. About 1,500 years later, the Aztecs developed a form of hydroponic (水培的) farming. ____16____ In the 1600s, French and Dutch farmers grew Mediterranean fruits on walls that maintained heat to help the fruits survive colder conditions.
Controlled environments for food production are not new. ____17____ In 1999, Dickson Despommier and his graduate students explored the concept of vertical farming as a way to feed growing urban populations, leading to the broader use of the term in the 2010s and 2020s.
Vertical farming as a practice really didn’t become popular in the United States until around 2020, but it has been used in countries like Japan and the Netherlands for decades, according to Koga, where greenhouses (the early form of vertical farming) in general are a much more integral part of their culture and food production. ____18____
Today, much of the work in creating more nutrient-rich food through vertical farming comes down to science. ____19____ Currently, researchers are working to create seeds that are best suited for an indoor, controlled environment.
____20____ For instance, FFAR invested some $7.5 million in the PIP consortium to research varieties specific to indoor planting. “We’ve adapted plants through history,” Reich told Built In. “We need to try to see if we can adapt plants specifically to indoor agriculture, to see if that makes it more economically practical for the future.”
A. The research witnesses more than one sponsor.
B. This practice was copied by many other farmers.
C. They created floating boats to grow crops on waters.
D. Yet the term “vertical farming” caught on much later.
E. The older industry shapes vertical farming’s operations.
F. Conventional methods adjust seeds for weather and soil.
G. Thus, vertical farming is adopted to reduce greenhouse gases.

The sun was sinking when Tom set off for home from his part-time job at the grocery store. The after-school work had taken up most of his spare time, but he never complained-every penny he earned was for his grandma’s medicine. He had been working there for two months, and every evening he would buy some bread and warm milk before heading home. The sweet smell of the bread always lingered in his nose, making his empty stomach roar softly, but he never took even a small bite of it.
Grandma’s illness had kept her quite weak for weeks, and the soft bread and warm milk were the only things she could eat easily these days, so Tom made sure to bring them home without fail each day. The narrow path cutting through the woods was his usual shortcut, which could save him nearly 20 minutes. It was a quiet trail lined with tall pine trees, and Tom had walked it hundreds of times, even memorizing the positions of every animal shaped stone along the way.
But today, the sky turned from pale orange to dark gray in the blink of an eye, and a heavy rain began to pour down without warning. Tom pulled the collar of his jacket up to cover his face, holding the paper bag with bread and milk tightly against his chest to protect it from getting wet. The rain beat against his shoulders mercilessly, soaking his school uniform through in minutes.
He tried to quicken his pace, but the dirt path soon turned into a muddy mess. His sneakers sank into the soft mud with every step, making it harder to move forward. Before long, he realized he had wandered off the familiar path in the thick forest. Tom felt a surge of fear welling up; he tried to call for help at the top of his voice, but his cries were drowned out by the deafening thunder crashing overhead. With no other choice, he struggled toward it, slipping and falling several times on the slippery ground.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Tom looked ahead, all hope seemingly slipping away.

D. Importance of the liquid copper to the devices.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards the new invention?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Critical. D. Neutral.

A. New Materials for Environmental Protection
B. New Materials for Trapping Heat and Saving Your Bill
C. New Coating for Both Heating and Cooling Buildings
D. New Coating for Solving Greenhouse Gas Emissions

固定搭配compare sth. with/to sth.

Is an On-Campus Organic Farm a Good Idea?

【答案】
正方
Is an On-Campus Organic Farm a Good Idea?
Our school is planning to build an organic farm as a labor practice base. I strongly support this idea.
First, organic farming means farming without any chemicals, so we students will weed, catch insects and change the crops in each field by ourselves. This hands-on work can improve our practical skills and teach us the value of labor. Second, vegetables grown in rich soil are full of essential minerals and have better flavour. Sharing such nutritious food with our teachers and classmates will surely bring us immense joy and a sense of achievement.
In my opinion, the organic farm will make our school life both healthier and more meaningful. (109词)
反方
Is an On-Campus Organic Farm a Good Idea?
Our school plans to build an organic farm on campus, but I have my worries about it.
To begin with, organic farmers use natural waste from animals as fertiliser. It smells terrible and is hard to store, which may pollute our beautiful campus. Worse still, it may carry bacteria, exposing students who touch it to the risk of getting ill. Besides, running an organic farm is highly demanding and requires enormous effort. It will take up too much time and energy that ought to be spent on our studies.
Therefore, I don’t think an organic farm is a wise choice for our school.(109词)

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

【答案】One possible version
Tom looked ahead, all hope seemingly slipping away. The dense trees blocked out the last glimmer of daylight, and thick mud clung to his sneakers like heavy chains, slowing him down with every step. The milk’s warmth already fading, he clutched the paper bag tightly to his chest, his tired legs trembling with exhaustion. Yet, the thought of Grandma waiting anxiously by the window lit a tiny flame in his heart. With renewed resolve, he tried to spot the familiar pines and animal-shaped stones he’d memorized by heart, but his strength drained fast, and despair soon crept into his heart.
Just then, through the mist, he spotted a faint yellow light flashing in the distance. It was the soft light from his home’s window, left on by Grandma. He hurried over and saw her propped weakly against the doorframe, her thin frame trembling in the cold wind and rain. “Grandma!” he choked out, his voice cracking. She handed him a thick blanket to wipe the water off, her eyes glistening with relief. “You’re soaked, my boy,” she murmured faintly. Tom held up the unblemished bag proudly, “I brought your bread and milk.” A soft sigh escaped her lips as she gazed at the bag. As he told her about his little adventure, they walked into the house together. In that warm light, the rain outside seemed gentle, and all the hardship melted into the quiet boundless love between a boy and his grandma, love that could weather any storm.
