An encyclopedia is a useful special reference (参考书) book, or a set of books. It contains valuable information on many different subjects, or it can focus deeply on one subject. For over 2,000 years, encyclopedias have summarized human knowledge to help people learn.
The word “encyclopedia” comes from ancient Greek words meaning “all-round education”. A German writer, Paul Scalich, was the first to use “encyclopedia” as the title for a book in 1559. Before that, these books often had creative names or were simply called “dictionaries”.
The meaning of “encyclopedia” has changed greatly. Modern printed encyclopedias usually include maps, pictures and an index to help find information quickly. They cover various topics, including biographies of important people, both in the past and at present. Many experts write these articles, and skilled editors carefully put them together. In modern times, many encyclopedias are available online. Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, is mostly used on the internet, with easily updated digital articles.
However, encyclopedias weren’t always exactly like this. In the past, some were just a single book written by one person, while others were indeed huge sets. They didn’t always have information about living people. Arranging topics alphabetically or using only Latin took many years to become very common.
Encyclopedias can cover all knowledge or focus on specific broad areas, like history or science. They are important because they record what people knew at different specific times. Even old encyclopedias are valuable because they contain writings from many great thinkers and leaders, showing how our understanding of the world has greatly grown.
16. What is the main purpose of an encyclopedia?
A. To develop formal education systems.
B. To advertise new scientific discoveries.
C. To entertain readers with creative stories.
D. To summarize human knowledge for learning.
17. What does the underlined word “index” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in Chinese?

A. ②→⑤→①→④→③ B. ⑤→②→④→①→③
C. ②→①→⑤→④→③ D. ①→④→⑤→②→③
19. According to the passage, what is the current situation of Encyclopedia Britannica?
A. It is only printed on paper. B. It is mostly used on the internet now.
C. It is only used by experts. D. It has stopped updating its information.
20. What is the writer’s opinion about old encyclopedias?
A. They are out of date and useless now.
B. They still have great value for us.
C. They only record wrong ideas of the past.
D. They are better than new online encyclopedias.

On October 15, 2026, Tesla finally showed its long-awaited new Roadster to the public. At an event in Texas, the company introduced this two-seat electric sports car. It is developed together with SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket company. Elon Musk wrote on social media, “Turns out the future does have flying cars.”
The most surprising part of the show is its thrusters (推进器), small powerful engines. In the show, the Roadster could lift off the ground, turn in the air and land safely with the help of these thrusters. Musk says the car can reach 60 miles per hour in less than one second and its top speed can go over 230 miles per hour. However, people are still not sure whether these special cars will be allowed on public roads and some experts also think the "flying" is more of a show than a useful feature for daily life.
Tesla hasn’t told people its final price yet. If customers want one, they need to pay a deposit (定金) to make a reservation. People need to pay at least 50,000 US dollars for the standard version. Musk says the car will start to be produced in 2028.
Still, the Roadster shows how fast technology is moving. Just a few years ago, a flying car seemed impossible. Now it is real, even if it is not yet ready for everyone. Bryant Walker Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina, said, “This was a demonstration of a one-off car using a technology around for many years. The future may still be far away, but it is coming—one small step at a time.”
21. Which picture can best describe the scene in the show?
A. B. C. D.
22. According to the text, which statement is true?
A. The car needs over a second to get to 60 mph.
B. The car’s maximum speed is higher than 230 mph.
C. The car can only drive at 60 mph.
D. 230 mph is the usual speed for the car.
23. Which of the following is NOT a problem the Roadster may face in the future?
A. Road rules and laws. B. Daily use of “flying”.
C. High price. D. Top speed.
24. What’s Bryant Walker Smith’s attitude (态度) towards the flying car’s future?
A. Doubtful—he thinks it will never come true.
B. Worried—he thinks it brings more problems.
C. Hopeful—it needs time, yet it is coming.
D. Excited—he thinks it is a perfect invention.
25. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain why Tesla’s flying car will replace normal cars.
B. To report Tesla’s flying car demo and discuss its real-world limits.
C. To compare Tesla’s Roadster with other flying cars.
D. To teach readers how to drive a flying car safely.

根据后文老师说的“people will sometimes try to label you with bad names”以及“stupid”可知,贴纸上写的是贬低人的话,应用stupid“愚蠢的”。
looking for“寻找”、caring about“关心”、listening to“听”均不符合取笑同学的语境。
【3题详解】
句意:除了背上贴着贴纸的那个男孩,没有人能解出这道题。
solve the problem 意为“解题”,应用solve。
