This is our first Spring Festival in China. We’re busy preparing everything. Your grandmother and I have cleaned our house from top to bottom. We’ve decorated (装饰) doors with red Spring Festival couplets and paper cuts. Yesterday we went shopping for new clothes. I bought a red Qipao for your grandmother. I chose a traditional silk jacket with golden patterns. New clothes mean a fresh start for next year here!
It will be Chinese New Year’s Eve tomorrow. Family members come together to welcome the new year with joy and love. They cook a big dinner called the “reunion (团圆) meal”. Fish (which means “having something left”), dumplings (shaped like old money with the meaning “treasure”), and other delicious dishes fill the table. While eating, family members watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV, a show with songs, dances, crosstalk and other wonderful performances. At midnight, parents and grandparents give children red packets and express happy wishes.
The first day of Chinese New Year is observed like this. In the morning, family members visit relatives and friends to say “Gong Xi Fa Cai” (Wishing you wealth!) and give red packets. Children show respect to elders and receive sweet candies or lucky money. The streets are lively with lion dances, dragon dances and colorful decorations. The day ends with laughter and hopes for a wonderful year ahead.
I hope next year we’ll spend the Spring Festival together in London’s Chinatown!
Happy Spring Festival!
Love from grandfather,
Baba Borzog
