Canada Geese are large blue and white birds. When autumn arrives, they have to fly south where the weather is warmer. The winters are so cold in Canada that the birds will die if they stay there.
Last spring, Bill Lishman found sixteen young Canada Geese on his farm. They had lost their parents. Bill thought, “These young birds won’t know what to do in autumn.” Bill had a small plane and he decided to teach the birds to follow him. All through the summer, he went on short trips in his plane and the young geese flew after him.
When the cold weather arrived in autumn, Bill flew to Virginia in the United States, 600 miles south of his home in Canada. The geese followed him all the way. Bill left the geese in Virginia and then returned home.
This spring, Bill waited for these birds to come back. However, they didn’t arrive. Bill flew to Virginia to get them. He looked for them for two weeks but couldn’t find them.

People realize that, although animals may not have the same intelligence as human beings, they are smart enough to learn certain things.
Dogs are extremely useful as companions for blind people. When a dog has been properly trained,he will always lead his blind master in the right direction and keep him out of danger. For example, seeingeye dogs learn never to cross a busy road when cars are coming, even if their master ordered them to do so.
Horses are also able to learn many things.Horses that are used for guard or police duty must learn never to be frightened of noises, traffic, and other disturbances.Racing horses are able to run much faster than other horses, but they are also quite high stung(易紧张的).Therefore,it is necessary for those people who train them to be very patient and understanding.
The moving pictures and television can use trained animals too. Some animals, such as monkeys and foxes, are easy to film. All you have to do is make_a_trail in front of the camera by dragging something that smells good to the animals over the ground, big animals, such as lions and tigers, can be photographed as they bound happily back their families and dinner,if a movie actor is nearby, the welltrained animal will pay no attention to him. However, the audience may imagine that the actor escaped a terrible death by the skin of his teeth.

For years and years people have been saying that railways are dead. “We can do without railways,” people say--as if motorcars and planes have made those railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, lose money and are dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil, railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What’s more, a railway takes you from the city centre into another centre. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.
Far from being dead, railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are travelling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, which are travelling at 250 miles an hour or more. So we will be wondering why we spend so much on motorcars we can't use and planes we can't fly in. After all, we have not enough money to buy the oil.
46. People say railways are unnecessary because they think ______.
A. trains cause traffic jams
B. trains carry goods only
C. trains go in a straight line
D. trains are slow and lose money
47. The writer’s idea seems to be that ______.
A. motorcars and planes are better than trains
B. trains go as fast as motorcars and planes
C. we still need railways in modern times
D. trains have nothing in common with motorcars
48. Compared with planes, one of the advantages of trains is that they ______.
A. can take you from place to place
B. carry goods and people cheaply
C. don't hold you up on the way
D. can travel at 250 miles an hour
49. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. It is more expensive to travel by train than by plane.
B. No railway station is at the city centre.
C. It is comfortable travelling on a train.
D. Planes and motorcars have replaced trains.
50. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Railways, Still Alive.
B. Planes Are Dead.

By the 18th century, a “greenhorn” had the meaning it has today--a person who is new in a job.
Green is also used to describe the emotion of jealousy(嫉妒). The “green-eyed monster” is an expression used about 400 years ago by William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the “green-eyed monster” if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that “green-eyed monster” may affect your friend if you get a pay rise while he does not.

A. can take you from place to place
B. carry goods and people cheaply
C. don't hold you up on the way

49. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. It is more expensive to travel by train than by plane.
