As a child, my world means the comforting walls of our home and the warmth of my family’s love. Little did I know that one day, everything would change in the blink of an eye (转眼之间) .
It was a sunny morning in Morocco, a country known for its wonderful culture and great natural beauty. I was playing with my younger sister in our courtyard, laughter filling the air. Suddenly, the ground beneath us trembled violently (剧烈地震动) , and the world broke down before my eyes. The Morocco earthquake had struck.
The hours that followed were filled with fear and uncertainty. Our home, once a place of love and happiness, lay in ruins (废墟). The world-famous Jemaa el-Fna, where we used to play, was now in a fearful mess. Neighbors and strangers alike came together, forming a lifeline of hope. We searched tirelessly for survivors and held on to any sign of life.
Days turned into weeks and we found ourselves living in a shelter (避难所) built by the community, surrounded by other families who had also experienced great losses. We shared stories of happy times, comforting one another through the darkest of nights. It was here that I learned the true meaning of the human spirit.
Though I had lost my home, I got a new understanding of the strength of life and kindness that appears in difficulties. Even in the face of unimaginable pain, we humans can still join hands and find hope once more. Today, I carry the memories of that earthquake with me, a testament (证明) to the greatness of the human heart. Andean bears are both the only surviving species of bear in South America as well as the last remaining species of short-faced bears in the world. “Andean bears are more vegetarian (素食的); they have a different diet, and they have moved from the very high Andes to the lowlands,” said biologist Ruthmery.
Their migratory patterns (模式) make Andean bears an important species to the ecosystems they pass through. As one of the largest vegetarian species in the area, they play a big role in spreading the seeds of the plants they eat along their journey, thus allowing the forests that they depend on for survival to grow back.
“For those bears, in all their key habitats (栖息地) — the cloud forests and the grasslands, we’ve got climate change, "Ruthmery said. “As a result, the habitat is disappearing in the high Andes, and water levels are dropping. Moreover, Andean bears are at risk of being hunted by humans.”
Ruthmery was attracted to the animals as a child. She studied biology in college and got a master’s degree in plant and biodiversity. Then she took her dream further in the field. Ruthmery was leading a project in Costa Rica when she received what would be a life-changing phone call. “I was working on tree protection,” she recalls. “One day,I received a call, telling me that there was an opportunity in Peru to work with Andean bears.” Without a second thought, she left her job in Costa Rica and headed home to the lovely bears of her youth.
Ruthmery and her team crossed the Amazon rainforest in order to better understand both the importance of the Andean bear to its habitat and the problems it was faced with. Now Ruthmery is inviting community members from the nearby areas, especially young people, to join their tasks. “You might think, ‘They live in the land of the bear,’ but many of them don’t know the bear, especially the new generation. Few of them have the chance, ”she said.
46. How do Andean bears benefit the ecosystems?
A. By eating plenty of foreign plants. B. By sharing habitats with other species.
C. By helping the natural recovery of forests. D. By influencing local animal populations.
47. What does Ruthmery mainly tell us about Andean bears in paragraph 3?
A. They are likely to fight more often. B. They face rising survival challenges.
C. They are fitting in new environments. D. They follow similar migratory patterns.
48. What drove Ruthmery to work with Andean bears?
A. Her plan for a career change. B. Her curiosity about Peru’s culture.
C. Her wish to return to her homeland. D. Her long admiration for the animals.
49. What is Ruthmery’ s present expectation?
A. To create protected areas to r bears. B. To raise local awareness of the bears.
C. To encourage bear-friendly farming practices. D. To promote tourism in the Amazon rainforest.
50. In which section of a website may this text appear?
A. Health and science. B. Lifestyle and travel.
C. History and culture. D. Nature and environment.

Using AI to help write a message to a friend is not a good idea — at least if your friend finds out about the use of AI, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that people in the study believed that a friend who used AI to write them a message didn’t put in as much effort as a friend who wrote a message themselves. That may be understandable, but the effect (影响) goes beyond the message itself, said Bingjie Liu, lead author of the study. “After they get an AI message, our participants (参与者) feel less satisfied with their relationship with their friend and feel more uncertain about where they stand,” Liu said.
But to be fair to AI, it wasn’t just the use of technology that turned people off. “People want their partners or friends to make an effort to come up with their own message without help from AI or other people,” Liu said.
“People want to know how much you want to invest (投入) in your friendship and if they feel you are cutting corners by using AI to help, that’s not good,” Liu explained.
Of course, most people won’t tell a friend that they used AI to help write a message, Liu said. But she noted that as Chat GPT becomes more popular, people may start doing a Turing Test in their minds as they read messages from friends and others. “Turing Test” is sometimes used to refer to people wondering if they can tell whether an action was taken by a computer or a person.
“It could be that people will secretly do this Turing Test in their minds, trying to figure out if messages have some AI component (成分),” Liu said. “It may hurt relationships.” The answer is to do your own work in relationships, she said. “Don’t use technology just because it is convenient. Sincerity (真诚) still matters a lot in relationships.”
51. How did people in the study feel about receiving an AI message from their friend?
A. Thankful. B. Surprised. C. Dissatisfied. D. Embarrassed.
52. Why do people prefer that friends write messages themselves instead of using AI?
A. AI messages often have many mistakes.
B. People believe AI lacks emotional depth.
C. Friends who use AI are considered dishonest.
D. People want to see the effort invested in the friendship.
53. What do the underlined words “cutting corners” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Doing something in the easiest way. B. Receiving some professional advice.
C. Dealing with the hardest challenge first. D. Avoiding personal arguments.
54. Why might people start a Turing Test according to Liu?
A. To judge the level of Chat GPT. B. To see if AI has been used in a message.
C. To test the sincerity of an online friend. D. To learn how to communicate with AI.
55. What is Liu’s suggestion?
A. Believing in the development of technology. B. Paying attention to real-world friends.
C. Being actively honest in relationships. D. Thinking twice before making a convenient choice.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work with animals in the zoo? Meet Kylene. She has been caring for the African penguins in the Sea World Theme Park for many years.
A hundred years ago, there were about I million African penguins, but now their population has significantly dwindled. And the population may be as low as 50,000 in the next 20 years if we don’ t do anything.
A few years ago, Kylene wanted to help protect South African penguins. She worked with zoos in South Africa and learned that there were still a lot of researchers who didn’t know about the penguins. To help researchers deal with it, under the researchers’ advice, Kylene went to put small electronic tags (标签) on the penguins in different places. The tags could collect some information about them. The information is important in helping the researchers take proper steps to protect the penguins.
Kylene traveled to an island in South Africa. There she and some scientists spent hours tagging penguins that lived on the island each day. While she was tagging the penguins, Kylene also looked for penguins that were trapped (困住) by rubbish or had injuries (损伤). Then she examined those injured penguins and gave them treatment.
When Kylene returned to the Sea World Theme Park in America, she started to teach the visitors how to help save South African penguins. She put together videos and a journal of her experience, introduced her research on these penguins to students visiting the Sea World Theme Park, and showed how they could help penguins. Kylene said, “In the past few years, most of my time has been spent caring for penguins. I could hardly spare some time to do something else.

55 What is Liu’s suggestion?
A. Believing in the development of technology. B. Paying attention to real-world friends.
C. Being actively honest in relationships. D. Thinking twice before making a convenient choice.
【答案】51. C 52. D 53. A 54. B 55. C
