I started my first sewing class when I was 10 years old. Despite the fact that I grew up sewing with family members, it was left on the sidelines as my life took on new interests and challenges. I didn’t own a sewing machine, so my sewing ideas and projects got filed under “when I have time and a sewing machine in the future”. I rarely got around to them.
Years ago, I resolved that I would do my best not to buy new things, especially clothes. What started as a no-buy challenge led to finding the joy and excitement again, which I experience when I engage in crafts like darning (缝补).
While I had sewing experience, darning was new to me. I got my first darning needles at a local shop called Spun to practise darning some old socks with holes. The people working there told me about community meetings that they host for people who like darning. A few days later, I came back because I was eager to show someone how my first darning project turned out. They gave me the biggest smile and praise for what I achieved.
What I discovered was not just a way to save my clothes or a new skill, but a community of darning lovers who are excited to welcome new people so they can experience darning and crafting together. The interest alone was enough for one to gain access and many were eager to help out beginners and share the joy, driving away the loneliness and anxiety about lacking skills.
I have darning projects that I am embarrassed about, but the quality does not matter, especially for a beginner. You can always begin with small tasks on clothes you only wear at home, not forcing yourself to complete them without faults. It’s all about taking a moment to think about the objects you own and adopting a practice of not throwing something away without considering a way of darning creatively.
24. What made the author start darning?
A. Experiences in a sewing class. B. Memories of family members.
C. The determination to stop purchases. D. The access to a sewing machine.
25. Why did the author return to Spun?
A. To learn darning from others. B. To get more darning tools.
C. To join a darning community. D. To present her darning progress.
26. Which words can best describe the darning lovers?
A. Professional but modest. B. Inspiring but lonely.
C. Creative and hardworking. D. Friendly and enthusiastic.
27. What does the author advise beginners to do?
A. Focus on the quality. B. Accept the imperfections.
C. Practise darning at home. D. Reuse clothes cautiously.
C
“Forest bathing”, which means absorbing yourself in nature, is known to have psychological benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, but now research suggests it also boosts physical health by lowering blood pressure and inflammation (炎症).
Iwao Uehara at Tokyo University of Agriculture and his colleagues wanted to better understand the benefits of this practice, so they looked at 36 adults, aged between 60 and 80, with high blood pressure.
Twenty-four of the adults spent three days and two nights in a forest setting in Qianjiangyuan National Park, about 3.5 hours by car from Hangzhou City in China. They participated in 3 hours of gentle hiking every day and 1 hour of group mindfulness meditation session, along with 1 hour of tea ceremony. These were done to help the participants become more mindful so they could be more absorbed in the forest bathing.
The researchers also had 12 people stay in the city and do a similar amount of walking along the streets near their hotel, along with a group mindfulness meditation. Both groups followed the same activities and sleep schedules and ate the same diets. They were also banned from using electrical devices, smoking and consuming alcohol or caffeine during the study.
The researchers measured the participants’ heart rates, blood pressure and levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, before and after the intervention. They found that those in the forest bathing group had significantly improved blood pressure levels and C-reactive protein levels compared with the city group. They also had higher heart rate variability — a measure of variation between heartbeats linked to better heart health.
The researchers believe forest bathing may calm the nervous system, helping to regulate heart and circulatory health. But Julia Gohlke at Virginia Tech says the study didn’t measure how many steps the two groups took. If the forest bathing group took more, that could explain the improved outcomes.
28. What is the feature of the subject of Iwao Uehara’s study?
A. Colleagues from Tokyo University.
B. The elderly with high blood pressure.
C. Middle-aged adults with high stress levels.
D. A randomly selected group of national park visitors.

Humans often favor bite-sized information—prioritizing short simple content over lengthy complex analyses. This preference, rooted in our nature to take mental shortcuts, is well-documented across fields like economics and social science. Yet academic research, with its dense details and specialized terms, rarely fits this model, which makes it tough for scholars to share with the public—especially as doubt about higher education grows.
However, turning research into brief expressions is not just possible, but necessary. If scholars fail to make their findings accessible, people may believe the wrong idea that academy is a closed circle for scholars, far away from daily life. For instance, top students simplify professional concepts to share with family. Scholars should follow: accept public speaking invitations, write concise public articles, and practice brief communication.
Bridging academy and the public is hardly new. Psychologists have long advocated “science communication,” and figures like Malcolm Gladwell have successfully linked scholars to audiences. Today, many scholars host useful blog, write popular books on topics like controlling emotions, or deliver well-watched TED talks that make science easy to understand—proving simple communication works.
The new critical cultural crisis we face is that governments increasingly undervalue expert knowledge, weakening the public’s access to reliable health and scientific information. Staying in labs or classrooms won’t solve this. Scholars should teach not only in schools but also beyond, helping the public check if casual ideas from social gatherings or press conferences are correct.
If scholars withdraw from public communication, uninformed voices will dominate. By joining conversations with easy-to-understand ideas, scholars ensure informed perspectives shape debates. This isn’t about abandoning academic rigor (严谨)—it’s about showing that brief expressions and deep ideas can coexist, making scholarship an important part of public life.
32.Why do humans prefer bite-sized information?
A. They trust lengthy analyses more.
B. They need time for social activities.
C. They naturally conserve mental effort.
D. They dislike complex academic content.
33.What does the author think of scholars using brief expressions to share research?
A. Weaken academic rigor. B. Break scholars stereotypes.
C. Easily mislead the public. D. Apply only for popular writers.
34.What can be inferred about scholars’ public communication?
A. It is a new trend in academia.
B. It brings informed views to public debates.
C. It aims to gain online popularity for scholars.
D. It makes governments value expert knowledge.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Students simplify academic ideas better than scholars.
B. Humans’ preference makes academic research irrelevant.
C. Scholars should avoid public communication to keep academic rigor.
D. Scholars should share research accessibly to counter uninformed voices.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Elena worked as a postal worker in a small coastal town. She loved her job—delivering letters and chatting with residents. But lately, she’d been feeling down. Her mother was sick, and the medical bills were piling up. She worked extra shifts, but it never seemed like enough.
One afternoon, Elena was sorting mail when she found an old envelope. It had no return address, and the recipient’s name was dirty: “Mrs. Clara Bennett, Ocean View Street.”
Ocean View Street was a quiet road by the beach. Elena drove there after her shift. She knocked on the doors of every house with the last name Bennett, but no one knew a Clara.
Just as she was about to give up, an elderly woman with white hair walked down the sidewalk. “Looking for someone?” she asked. “Mrs. Clara Bennett. Do you know her?” Elena said.
The woman’s eyes widened. “That’s me. But I haven’t received a personal letter in years. All my friends are gone, and my family live across the country.”
Elena handed her the envelope. Mrs. Bennett’s hands shook as she opened it. She read it slowly, tears streaming down her face. “It’s from my husband,” she said softly. “He died twenty years ago. I can’t believe this.”
Elena sat with her on the porch as Mrs. Bennett read the letter aloud. It was dated June 15, 1998—the day before Mr. Bennett had planned to take her on an anniversary trip. He’d written his love for her. He’d hidden the letter, planning to give it to her on the trip. But he’d had a heart attack the night before, and the letter had been forgotten.
“I sold our house last year, and the new owners must have found it and mailed it,” Mrs. Bennett said. She held the letter to her chest, like it was a precious treasure.
Elena started visiting Mrs. Bennett every Saturday. They’d drink tea and share their stories.

I staited my first sewing class when I was 10 years old.Despite the fact that I grew up sewing with
family members,it was left on the sidelines as my life took on new interests and challenges.I didn't
own a sewing machine,so my sewing ideas and projects got filed under "when I have time and a
sewing machine in the future".I rarely got around to them.
Years ago,I resolved that I would do my best not to buy new things, especially clothes. What
started as a no-buy challenge led to finding the joy and excitement again, which I experience when I
engage in c1 afts like darning(缝补).
While I had sewing experience, damning was new to me.I got my first daining needles at a local
shop called Spun to practise darning some old socks with holes. The people working there told me
about community meetings that they host for people who like damning.A few days later,I came back
because I was eager to show someone how my first darning project turned out. They gave me the
biggest smile and praise for what I achieved.
What I discovered was not just a way to save my clothes or a new skill, but a community of
darning lovers who are excited to welcome new people so they can experience darning and crafting
together. The interest alone was enough for one to gain access and many were eager to help out
beginners and share the joy, driving away the loneliness and anxiety about lacking skills.
I have darning projects that I am embarrassed about, but the quality does not matter, especially for
a beginner. You can always begin with small tasks on clothes you only wear at home, not forcing
yourself to complete them without faults. It's all about taking a moment to think about the objects you

"Forest bathing",which means absorbing yourself in nature,is known to have psychological
benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, but now research suggests it also boosts physical health
by lowering blood pressure and inflammation ()
Iwao Uehara at Tokyo University of Agriculture and his colleagues wanted to better understand the
benefits of this practice,so they looked at 36 adults, aged between 60 and 80,with high blood pressure.
Twenty-four of the adults spent three days and two nights in a forest setting in Qianjiangyuan
National Park, about 3.5 hours by car from Hangzhou City in China. They participated in 3 hours of
gentle hiking every day and 1 hour of group mindfulness meditation session, along with 1 hour of tea
ceremony. These were done to help the participants become more mindful so they could be more
absorbed in the forest bathing.
The researchers also had 12 people stay in the city and do a similar amount of walking along the
streets near their hotel, along with a group mindfulness meditation. Both groups followed the same
activities and sleep schedules and ate the same diets. They were also banned from using electrical
devices, smoking and consuming alcohol or caffeine during the study.
The researchers measured the paiticipants'heart rates, blood pressure and levels of C-reactive
protein,a marker of inflammation, before and after the intervention. They found that those in the forest
bathing group had significantly improved blood pressure levels and C-reactive protein levels compared
with the city group. They also had higher heart rate variability-a measure of variation between
heartbeats linked to better heart health.
The researchers believe forest bathing may calm the nervous system, helping to regulate heart and
circulatory health. But Julia Gohlke at Virginia Tech says the study didn't measure how many steps the
two groups took.If the forest bathing group took more, that could explain the improved outcomes.

Humans often favor bite-sized informationprioritizing short simple content over lengthy
complex analyses. This preference, rooted in our nature to take mental shortcuts,is well-documented
across fields like economics and social science.Yet academic research, with its dense details and
specialized terms, rarely fits this model, which makes it tough for scholars to share with the
public-especially as doubt about higher education grows.
However, turning research into brief expressions is not just possible, but necessary. If scholars fail
to make their findings accessible, people may believe the wrong idea that academy is a closed circle for
scholars, far away from daily life. For instance, top students simplify professional concepts to share
with family.Scholars should follow:accept public speaking invitations, write concise public aiticles,
and practice brief communication.
Bridging academy and the public is hardly new.Psychologists have long advocated "science
communication,"and figures like Malcolm Gladwell have successfully linked scholars to audiences.
Today, many scholars host useful blog, write popular books on topics like controlling emotions,or
deliver well-watched TED talks that make science easy to understand-proving simple communication
works
The new critical cultural crisis we face is that governments increasingly undervalue expeit
knowledge, weakening the public's access to reliable health and scientific information.Staying in labs
or classrooms won't solve this.Scholars should teach not only in schools but also beyond, helping the
public check if casual ideas from social gatherings or press conferences are correct.
If scholars withdraw from public communication, uninformed voices will dominate.By joining
conversations with easy-to-understand ideas, scholars ensure informed perspectives shape debates. This
isn't about abandoning academic rigor ()it's about showing that brief expressions and deep ideas
can coexist, making scholarship an impoitant part of public life.
32.Why do humans prefer bite-sized information?
A.They trust lengthy analyses more.
B.They need time for social activities.
C.They naturally conserve mental effort.
D.They dislike complex academic content.
33.What does the author think of scholars using brief expressions to share research?
A.Weaken academic rigor.
B.Break scholars stereotypes.
C.Easily mislead the public
D.Apply only for popular writers.

35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Students simplify academic ideas better than scholars.

Elena worked as a postal worker in a small coastal town. She loved her job-delivering letters and
chatting with residents. But lately, she'd been feeling down. Her mother was sick, and the medical bills
were piling up.She worked extra shifts, but it never seemed like enough.
One afternoon,Elena was sorting mail when she found an old envelope. It had no return address,
and the recipient's name was dirty:"Mrs.Clara Bennett,Ocean View Street."
Ocean View Street was a quiet road by the beach.Elena drove there after her shift. She knocked
on the doors of every house with the last name Bennett, but no one knew a Clara.
Just as she was about to give up,an elderly woman with white hair walked down the sidewalk.
"Looking for someone?"she asked."Mrs.Clara Bennett.Do you know her?"Elena said
The woman's eyes widened."That's me.But I haven't received a personal letter in years.All my
friends are gone, and my family live across the country."
Elena handed her the envelope.Mrs.Bennett's hands shook as she opened it.She read it slowly,
tears streaming down her face."It's from my husband,"she said softly."He died twenty years ago.I
can't believe this.”
Elena sat with her on the porch as Mrs.Bennett read the letter aloud. It was dated June 15,
1998-the day before Mr.Bennett had planned to take her on an anniversary trip. He'd written his love
for her. He'd hidden the letter, planning to give it to her on the trip. But he'd had a heart attack the
night before, and the letter had been forgotten.
"I sold our house last year, and the new owners must have found it and mailed it,"Mrs.Bennett
said. She held the letter to her chest, like it was a precious treasure.
Elena started visiting Mrs.Bennett every Saturday. They'd drink tea and share their stories.
