I sat on the sidelines with my 14-year-old son, Nathan, who was hardly enthusiastic to be at a community Christmas party for little kids. He was too old to care about Santa, the guest of honor. Meanwhile, Santa was being surrounded by the excited children.
“Look, Nathan,” I gave him a little push. “Mrs. Claus is trying to get your attention.” Unwillingly, he followed me over.
“What do you want for Christmas?” Mrs. Claus asked him. “Well, I like Legos, and I need a new tennis racket. But what I really can’t wait for is a 3D printer.” Nathan wanted to start an online business making cell phone cases.
Mrs. Claus brightened. “My grandkids are clamoring for a 3D printer too. They have a pet duck named Tim, who’s missing a leg. The grandkids want to make Tim a prosthetic (假肢) and attach it with a Velcro strap (魔术贴).”
“Cool project,” Nathan said. He thought for a minute. “I’ll make him one for free, but it won’t be ready for Christmas. My parents and I worked out a deal. They’re going to invest in my business with a loan, but I have to save up some of the money myself. I’ll make Tim’s leg as soon as I can afford a printer.”
Two weeks later, Nathan opened his 3D printer. His eyes lit up. After weeks of practice, Nathan made his first plastic leg for Tim, but the strap didn’t hold when the duck moved. Nathan didn’t give up. He made a second one. This time, Tim flapped (拍打) his wings and made loud noises when they put it on. The third one worked better — Tim took a few steps. The grandkids cheered, happy that Tim could finally experience what it was like to walk on two legs.
This Christmas, Nathan’s 3D printer brought more than tech skills — it brought the joy of helping. We’d made an excellent investment.

A He was helping organize the event.
B. He enjoyed playing with little kids.
C. He wasn’t interested in the Christmas party.

27. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The 3D printing’s technical limits. B. The duck’s cheerful walking experience.
C. The perfect solution for animal disabilities. D. The challenges of perfecting the prosthetic.

South Korean scientists have developed a new type of food called “meaty rice”. It is a mixture of cow muscle and fat cells integrated into rice grains. The research team at Seoul’s Yonsei University, led by Professor Park So-hyeon, used a technique called cell-cultured protein, which involves growing animal cells in the lab without harming any animals. They then infused (注入) these cells into rice grains, using a special process that preserves the grain’s structure and properties.
Meaty rice is a pink-hued grain that is packed with beef muscle and fat cells, offering a meaty taste and texture. According to the study, each gram of meaty rice contains about 0.4 grams of protein, compared to 0.08 grams in regular rice. It also has a higher iron, zinc and vitamin B12 content, which are essential for human health. It offers a unique flavor, enhances nutrition and reduces environmental impact.
Conventional meat production consumes large amounts of land, water and energy and releases greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Meaty rice, on the other hand, requires fewer resources and produces fewer emissions than animal farming. According to the study, meaty rice could reduce land use by 99%, water use by 96% and greenhouse gas emissions by 92%, compared to beef production.
However, meaty rice is still in its early stages of development and many issues must be tackled before it can be widely accepted. For instance, how will it affect the health and safety of consumers? How will it affect the livelihoods (生计) of farmers and the economy of food production? The researchers are optimistic that meaty rice will be a game-changer for the future of food and they are planning to conduct more tests to improve its quality. They believe that meaty rice could be the next frontier of food innovation and also help relieve hunger and malnutrition by providing cheaper and more accessible sources of protein and micronutrients.
28. How did researchers develop the meaty rice?
A. By adding artificial flavors to rice grains. B. By growing rice in a special environment.
C. By integrating animal cells into rice grains. D. By infusing plant-based proteins into meat.
29. What advantage does meaty rice have over regular rice?
A. It has a higher yield. B. It is more nutritious.
C. It has a fresher taste. D. It is more affordable.
30. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To stress the strengths of meaty rice production.
B. To explain the challenges of developing meaty rice.
C. To reveal the significance of promoting green farming.
D. To show the increasing demand for meat consumption.
31. What can we infer about meaty rice according to researchers?
A. It can be a key option to address the food crisis.
B. It can greatly expand the livelihoods of farmers.
C. It will completely resolve global issues of starvation.
D. It will replace traditional meat products in the future.
D
The commonly held belief that it takes 21 days to form a new habit can be traced back to a 1960 book by plastic surgeon Maxwel Maltz called Psycho-Cybernetics. In his work treating patients who had gone through facial reconstruction surgery, Maltz noticed that it typically took around three weeks for them to adjust to seeing their new faces in the mirror. He also found that individuals who had lost a limb still sensed “phantom (幻觉的)” pains in the missing arm or leg for about 21 days.
Based on these perceptions (认知) of recovery time after significant physical changes, Maltz theorized in his book that it likely takes a minimum of 21 days for the neurological path ways in our brains associated with old behaviors and habits to go away, and for new mental images and routines to take firm root. This idea of a standardized 21-day formation period for habits soon became widely accepted.
However, Maltz was drawing causal inferences rather than conducting strict scientific research. It wasn’t until 2010 that health psychologist Phillippa Lally at University College London decided to properly study habit formation timelines. She designed a year-long experiment that tracked 96 participants as they each established a single new habit of their choosing. Every day, subjects reported on whether they successfully performed their intended behavior that day as well as how automatic the action felt.
Lally’ findings revealed that on average, it took 66 days before a habit became a normal part of a routine and felt automatic. But results varied widely, with habits forming anywhere from 18 days up to 254 days between individuals. Consistency was the key factor in successfully making a behavior habitual, with sometimes missing days not stopping overall progress.
This landmark study disproved the assumed 21-day standard and showed that a wide range of timelines are normal. Ultimately, committing to consistently practicing a new behavior for months, not weeks, is what allows real habit change and improvement to occur naturally in the brain. Understanding habit formation as a gradual, individualized process helps people develop positive routines without unrealistic expectations.
32. What is Maltz’s assumption based on?
A. An intensive survey. B. Psychological work.
C. The strict scientific research. D. His personal observations.
33. Why did Lally’s team conduct the research?
A. To prove Maltz’s theory on habit formation.
B. To identify timelines for establishing new habits.
C. To explore the factors in affecting habit formation.
D. To present advantages of developing good behavior.
34. What do we know about Lally’s findings?
A. There are large individual differences in forming habits.
B. Most participants took 66 days to make a behavior habitual.
C. It is harder to form a new habit than to persist with an old one.
D. Occasional stops have a big effect on the progress of habit formation.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Is the Key to Form a New Habit?
B. How Do We Develop Positive Routines?
C. When Is the Best Time to Start a New Habit?
D. Does It Really Take 21 Days to Build a New Habit?

“Today's test score will decide who has topped the class, so be ready,” announced Miss Natasha in the classroom.
Miss Natasha got everyone's test papers, cleared her throat to announce the results and distributed the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about their scores that would be announced soon.
Ali and Bob have been competitors since class one and each year either one of the two came first in the class. This year, there was tough competition between both of them, and they eagerly awaited the results.
“Peter, 18,”announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper,“Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19 ... and lastly Alia, 15.”
When Miss Natasha had distributed the test papers in class, everyone found out that Ali beat Bob by one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated him and Ali was happy as he accepted everyone's congratulations.
As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. Now if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would not only lose two marks but also his first position.
Considering the situation, he remained quiet and went home. But all day he kept thinking about it. Should he or shouldn't he tell Miss Natasha about it? He thought that it had been already done, and no one would notice if he didn't tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn't tell the teacher about it and stayed the position-holder in class, he wouldn't rightfully take the position as it clearly belonged to Bob.
This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would lose his first position. He remembered how everyone cheered for him and congratulated him in class.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all.

M: First, you can set small, achievable goals. For example, instead of thinking about cleaning the whole house, start with just one room.
W: That makes sense.
M: Another thing is to create a schedule. You can make a daily to-do list and set specific time for each task.
W: I guess having a routine could help. But what if I still don’t feel like doing it?
M: You can give yourself rewards. If you finish a task, you can go for a short walk, enjoy a meal, or watch your favorite show.
W: Great! I love watching TV, so I’ll definitely use that as a reward for myself. Thanks for the advice. I feel a little more hopeful now.

W: A new museum of laughter in Croatia is helping people deal with the negativity of modern life. Visitors to the HaHaHouse in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, walk into a little cloud of white smoke when they step inside. Its purpose is to blow away their worries before they climb into a “giant washing machine”. Then they move down a twisting slide into a space filled with little white balls where their trip to a happier place starts.
Forty-three-year-old Andrea Golubic is the museum’s creator. Golubic said she got the idea during the pandemic. At that time, many people were feeling down, so she wanted to heal people with laughter. Golubic said a picture of herself when she was seven inspired her. “I was constantly joking as a kid,” she added.
The museum has eight interactive zones or areas. One has rubber chickens singing cheerfully. They sing songs like ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”. There is a room where people wrestle in large clothes. There is also some serious history of humor from ancient to modern times told through theaters, films or the Internet.
Singer Zorica Bucic said the museum was just right for this era. “Entering here is like entering childhood, being relieved of all problems,” she said. Bucic added that if people could come to the museum often, they wouldn’t need to visit a psychologist.

24. What can we learn about Nathan from the first two paragraphs?
A. He was helping organize the event.
B. He enjoyed playing with little kids.
C. He wasn’t interested in the Christmas party.
D. He was surrounded by enthusiastic children.
25. What does the underlined word “clamoring” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Begging. B. Searching. C. Preparing. D. Trading.
26. Why did Nathan offer to make Tim’s prosthetic leg for free?
A. He wanted to impress Mrs. Claus. B. He saw it as a business opportunity.
C. He cared more about helping than profiting. D. He was confident in his 3D printing abilities.
27. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The 3D printing’s technical limits. B. The duck’s cheerful walking experience.
C. The perfect solution for animal disabilities. D. The challenges of perfecting the prosthetic.
C 25. A 26. C 27. D

根据第四段中“They have a pet duck named Tim, who’s missing a leg. The grandkids want to make Tim a prosthetic (假肢) and attach it with a Velcro strap (魔术贴)(他们养了一只叫Tim的宠物鸭,这只鸭子少了一条腿。孙辈们想给蒂姆做一个假肢,再用魔术贴带子把它固定好)”可知,孙子们想要3D打印机给Tim做一个假肢,因此他们迫切想要一台3D打印机。由此猜测,划线词意为“迫切想要”,与beg同义。故选A。
根据倒数第三段中“I’ll make him one for free, but it won’t be ready for Christmas.(我会免费给它做一个假肢,但圣诞节前做不出来)”和最后一段中“This Christmas, Nathan’s 3D printer brought more than tech skills — it brought the joy of helping.(今年圣诞节,Nathan的3D打印机带来的不仅仅是技术技能,它还带来了帮助他人的快乐)”可知,Nathan免费给Tim做假肢是为了提供帮助而不是盈利。
根据第六段中“After weeks of practice, Nathan made his first plastic leg for Tim, but the strap didn’t hold when the duck moved. Nathan didn’t give up. He made a second one. This time, Tim flapped (拍打) his wings and made loud noises when they put it on. The third one worked better — Tim took a few steps. The grandkids cheered, happy that Tim could finally experience what it was like to walk on two legs.(他的眼睛亮了起来。

D 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第一段的句子“In his work treating patients who had gone through facial reconstruction surgery, Maltz noticed that it typically took around three weeks for them to adjust to seeing their new faces in the mirror. He also found that individuals who had lost a limb still sensed “phantom (幻觉的)” pains in the missing arm or leg for about 21 days.(在治疗接受面部重建手术的病人时,马尔茨注意到,他们通常需要大约三周的时间来适应在镜子里看到自己的新面孔。他还发现,失去肢体的人在大约21天的时间里,仍然会在失去的手臂或腿上感到“幻痛”)”和根据第二段中的“Based on these perceptions (认知) of recovery time after significant physical changes, Maltz theorized in his book that it likely takes a minimum of 21 days for the neurological path ways in our brains associated with old behaviors and habits to go away, and for new mental images and routines to take firm root.(基于这些对重大身体变化后恢复时间的认知,Maltz在他的书中提出了一个理论,即我们大脑中与旧行为和习惯相关的神经通路可能需要至少21天的时间才能消失,而新的心理图像和常规则需要21天的时间才能牢固地扎根。)”
根据第三段中的“However, Maltz was drawing causal inferences rather than conducting strict scientific research.(然而,Maltz是在进行因果推论,而不是进行严格的科学研究。)”可知,Maltz的结论是推断出来的,而没又进行科学研究,结合“It wasn’t until 2010 that health psychologist Phillippa Lally at University College London decided to properly study habit formation timelines.(直到2010年,伦敦大学学院的健康心理学家Phillippa Lally才决定适当地研究习惯形成的时间表。)”
根据倒数第二段中的“Lally’ findings revealed that on average, it took 66 days before a habit became a normal part of a routine and felt automatic. But results varied widely, with habits forming anywhere from 18 days up to 254 days between individuals. (Lally的研究结果显示,一个习惯平均需要66天才能成为日常生活的一部分,并让人觉得是自然而然的。但结果差异很大,个体之间的习惯形成时间从18天到254天不等。)”可知,Lally的研究发现,一个习惯平均需要66天才能成为生活中的一部分,但是,个体之间的差异很大,从18天到254天不等,由此可知,在Lally的研究中发现习惯的形成有很大的个体差异。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“This idea of a standardized 21-day formation period for habits soon became widely accepted.(习惯的标准化21天形成周期的观点很快被广泛接受。)”可知,本文第一二段中分析了被人们广泛接受的Maltz 通过观察发现人们需要21天形成一个新习惯,根据第三段中的“However, Maltz was drawing causal inferences rather than conducting strict scientific research. It wasn’t until 2010 that health psychologist Phillippa Lally at University College London decided to properly study habit formation timelines.(然而,马尔茨是在进行因果推论,而不是进行严格的科学研究。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150 左右;

He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all. As he fought with his thoughts, his mum asked him,“What's the matter?”“Mum, what if doing the right thing would mean you would lose something?”he asked in reply.“Son, if it is the right thing to do, then I am sure you will be rewarded for it. A wrong thing may seem attractive at first, but if it is wrong, it will hurt us someday,” his mum said.
“My son, you are a brave and honest boy so just do what you think is right,”his mum continued. The next day in class, Miss Natasha announced,“Today Ali has done what only a few of us would have the courage to do. He came to me and told me that I had mistakenly given him two marks and he was right about it, so the first position goes to Bob, not Ali.” Everyone, even Bob, was surprised by this development. After the class, Bob asked Ali,“Why did you do that?”Ali simply replied,“Because it was the right thing to do.
