Unit 7 Feel the Rhythm
Section B 3a-3c (Reading & Writing)
I. Teaching Objectives
- By the end of this lesson, students will be able to read and understand the story "My Music Story" by Jack, identifying the main idea and key details about his music experience.
- Students will be able to put five events from the story in correct chronological order (E-C-B-D-A) by using sequencing clues in the text.
- Students will be able to discuss the role of music in their own lives using key expressions from 3b, such as "bring happiness", "communicate emotions", and "make friends".
- Students will be able to write a short music story (about 60-80 words) for a teen magazine using the sentence frames provided in 3b.
- Students will develop an appreciation for how music influences personal growth and relationships.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key Points:
- Reading comprehension: understanding the narrative structure of "My Music Story" and identifying key events in Jack's music journey.
- Using sentence frames from 3b to discuss and write about the role of music in personal life.
- Vocabulary related to music experiences and emotions: bring happiness, inspire imagination, communicate emotions, make friends, find courage.
Difficult Points:
- Putting events in correct order based on textual clues and sequencing words (e.g., "at first", "then", "gradually", "nowadays").
- Writing a coherent personal music story using appropriate tenses - past tense for past events and present tense for current feelings.

III. Teaching Tools
- Multimedia courseware (PPT) with the reading text and discussion prompts
- Student textbooks (PEP New Edition, Grade 9, Unit 7)
- Blackboard and colored markers
- Printed worksheets for event ordering (3a) and writing (3c)
- Timer for classroom activities
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 minutes)
- Teacher plays a short music clip (e.g., a popular song students know) and asks: "What kind of music do you like? Why?"
- Students share briefly in English (e.g., I like pop music because it is exciting.).
- Teacher writes "Music in My Life" on the blackboard and asks: "What role does music play in your life?" Students brainstorm words or phrases (happy, relax, friends).
- Teacher introduces today's task: "Today we will read a boy's music story, talk about music in our lives, and write our own music stories."
Step 2 Reading - Activity 3a (12 minutes)
- Teacher asks students to read the story "My Music Story" silently for 2 minutes. After reading, teacher asks: "What is the story mainly about?" Students give a one-sentence summary (e.g., It's about a boy who learned to play guitar and joined a band.).
- Students read the story again and complete the event-ordering exercise (3a). They need to put events A-E in the correct order. Teacher reminds them to look for time clues: "eighth birthday", "next several months", "at first", "then", "gradually", "nowadays".
- Students check answers with a partner. Teacher goes through the answers on PPT:
- Answer key: E (father bought guitar) -> C (father showed him) -> B (became good at playing) -> D (joined a band) -> A (made friends and had fun).
- Teacher asks two comprehension questions:
- 1. Why was Jack too shy at first? (Because he was shy to play in front of people.)
- 2. What does music mean to Jack now? (It makes him happy when sad and relaxes him when stressed.)
