Is it still necessary to memorise things when we can find them online?
Textbook: p. 40. Class time: 40 minutes. Your products: an evidence sheet, a short debate and a revised position.
A Before class 课前准备
Choose an initial position: we still need to memorise some things / we can reduce what we memorise. Collect one everyday example. Bring the source if you use a published claim. You may revise your position later.
B Define the question 明确辩题 5 minutes
Read both sides of the table in 4b. Does “we need to memorise things” mean “we must memorise everything”? Does “online information exists” mean “we can always reach and understand it”? Explain the difference.

For this debate, memorise means learn something well enough to recall it without looking. Discuss what deserves that effort. Avoid turning the other side’s position into an extreme claim.
C Compare three situations 比较三种情境 8 minutes
Decide what to remember, what to check, and why. Begin alone, then compare with a partner.
Situation 情境 | Remember or check 记忆或查询 | Reason 理由 |
Use common words in a conversation | ________________ | ________________ |
Find tomorrow’s changed club timetable | ________________ | ________________ |
Explain a text using key background ideas | ________________ | ________________ |
Choose your strongest example. What would happen if the internet were unavailable? What would happen if the remembered information were out of date?

Build and challenge evidence 建立并质疑证据
D Prepare an evidence sheet 准备证据单 10 minutes
Write three reasons for your position. Add an example to each. For one reason, collect a small piece of real classroom evidence or use a named source. A made-up percentage is not evidence.
Reason 理由 | Example or observation 例子或观察 | What it can show 说明什么 |
1 __________________ | _____________________ | ___________________ |
2 __________________ | _____________________ | ___________________ |
3 __________________ | _____________________ | ___________________ |
Optional classroom observation 可选课堂观察
Choose five multiplication facts your partner already knows. Time one attempt from memory and one attempt using a multiplication table. Half the pairs use the table first. Record errors as well as time. Compare only what actually happened.
Record 记录 | From memory 凭记忆 | Using a table 查表 |
Order of attempt | ________ | ________ |
Time in seconds | ________ | ________ |
Correct answers out of 5 | ________ | ________ |
This is a small classroom illustration, not proof about every learner or online search. Familiarity, task difficulty and practice order can affect the result. If no observation is completed, label your example as an example; do not invent data.
Prepare a fair challenge 准备合理质询
Write the strongest point the other side may make. Answer it with a reason or a limitation, rather than repeating your opinion.
They may argue ____________________. I accept __________, but in the case of __________, ____________________.
