How can we talk about memory with both clarity and care?
Textbook: pp. 32–34. Class time: 40 minutes. Your products: a supportive dialogue and a one-minute family memory.
A Before class
Read the conversation on p. 34. Choose a happy family memory you are comfortable sharing. You may use an imagined family if you prefer. Bring three keywords, not a written speech.
B Find what the speaker needs 5 minutes
Read 3a again. Rick says, “I just feel so sad.” Does he only need information, or does he also need understanding? Point to two responses from Chen Jie.

C Build an evidence map 10 minutes
Complete the table with short notes. Mark D for directly stated and I for inferred. Write “not stated” if the conversation does not tell you.
Rick’s grandma | _____________ | _____________ | _____________ |
Chen Jie’s grandpa | _____________ | _____________ | _____________ |
Can we say exactly what Grandpa still remembers? Explain why a reasonable guess is not the same as a stated fact.

Compare: “She forgot you.” / “She still remembers that you love cookies.” How might each sentence make Rick feel? What does the second sentence help him notice?

Make the response helpful
D Hear and use emphasis 8 minutes
Use the 3c audio, or listen to a teacher’s reading of 3a. Underline words that carry surprise, worry or warmth. Compare your choices; a different stress pattern may express a different meaning.
Rick: “My dad!”
Rick: “Me!”
Chen Jie: “In your case, your grandma still remembers that you love cookies!”
Try stressing “still” and then “cookies”. What changes? Explain the difference in one sentence. Then role-play four to six lines of the textbook conversation.

E A memory help desk 12 minutes
Plan silently for two minutes. Then work in pairs at a low voice. Choose Case A or B. Speak for about one minute, switch roles, and improve one response.
Case A: A friend forgot to bring a club poster and feels embarrassed.
Case B: A friend feels sad because a grandparent has forgotten a familiar family event.
