Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the bright sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage (车库), and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket. It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors.
However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. Finally, she ordered a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly high-fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was complete. What’s more, it was the perfect fit for us two 70-somethings to have late afternoon chats.
Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually developed — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he called it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name “Meditating Bench”.
Last fall, with the temperature falling, we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We had to consider what to do with the bench in winter. Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter.
When I caught sight of it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbors are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.
4. What is the purpose of Donna’s decision to replace the chair and bucket?
A. Attract more neighbors. B. Adapt to warmer weather.
C. Lighten the carrying load. D. Get better seating for chats.
5. How did the bench get its different names?
A. From users’ activities on it. B. From seasonal discussions.
C. From items placed on it. D. From Donna’s creative ideas.
6. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To suggest flowers would soon be planted.
B. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter.
C. To show the bench was not serving its purpose.
D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage.
7. What does “The Bench” stand for by the end of the story?
A. A solution to the aging problem. B. A symbol of community ties.
C. A reminder of the past summer. D. A record of the garage storage.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据第二段中“However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. (然而,在接下来的几天里,我们发现仅有一把椅子和一个桶是不够的,它们坐起来不太舒服。唐娜认为我们需要一条长凳。)”及“What’s more, it was the perfect fit for us two 70-somethings to have late afternoon chats. (而且,它非常适合我们两位七十多岁的老人在傍晚聊天。)”可知,唐娜决定换掉椅子和桶,是为了获得更舒适的座位来聊天。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually developed — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he called it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想)”, adding yet another name “Meditating Bench” (思维敏捷的唐娜回应道:这是我们的“思考长凳”!我们思考生活中发生的重要事情。随后,它的名字慢慢多了起来——有一位邻居独自坐在上面沉思,把它叫作“做决定长凳”;还有一次唐娜被撞见在上面打盹,却坚称自己在“冥想”,于是又多了一个名字“冥想长凳”。)”可知,长凳的不同名字来源于使用者在长凳上进行的各类活动。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“When I caught sight of it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. (在接下来的几个月里,我好几次看见这条长凳孤零零地放在那里,上面放着空花盆和一些破旧扁平的箱子。)”并结合全文可知,这条原本供邻居坐着闲谈思考的长凳,冬天被放在车库堆放杂物,没有发挥它原本的作用。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbors are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.(但是现在,漫长的冬天过去了,春花即将在温暖的阳光下绽放,我们这些邻居也准备好迎接这条长凳重新回到我们的生活中。)”
C
Getting hugged by someone you care about can be a wonderfully encouraging experience. Research has shown hugs can strengthen our social connections, improve our emotional state and reduce loneliness and sadness. They can even help to lower stress levels and improve health.
Unluckily, not everyone has the chance to receive hugs whenever they need them. So, how can this problem be solved? Scientists have suggested developing social robots that can hug people. These robots could probably offer lonely people the positive benefits of getting hugged.
However, creating a hug robot that is well received by people and leads to positive feelings and reduced stress is no simple task. For example, if the robot is too large or intimidating in design, people may feel uneasy about hugging it. Therefore, it is important for researchers to carry out further studies to ensure that hug robots are designed in a way that supports acceptance and comfort.
A recent study published in International Journal of Social Robotics focused on the development of Moffully-Ⅱ, a newly developed hug robot. It looks like a large, human-shaped teddy bear and stands at two meters tall. During a hug, it is able to move its arms and perform different gestures (手势). Copying the actions that humans usually do during hugs, such as tapping someone on the back, is necessary for making the hug feel real.
During the study, volunteers who received hugs from Moffully-Ⅱ showed a preference for hugs with gestures over those without gestures. They sensed the robot as friendlier and safer when it performed gestures, and they found the hugs to be more enjoyable in general.
While some people may feel uncomfortable with the idea of hugging a robot instead of a human, hug robots show possibilities for improving the well-being of those who are short of hugs. This includes persons in nursing homes who may benefit from the comforting effects of hugs, even if they are provided by a robot.
8. What is one of the possible benefits of receiving hugs?
A. Increasing loneliness. B. Lowering emotional state.
C. Controlling social connections. D. Reducing stress and improving health.
9. The underlined word “intimidating” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. special B. cool C. terrible D. friendly
10. What is the finding of the study mentioned in the text?
A. Gestures matter in robot hugs.
B. Robots behave well in nursing homes.
C. Hug robots are effective for lonely people.
D. Social robots can be developed for sick people.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Are You Ready to Hug a Robot?
B. Is It Strange for Robots to Give Hugs?
C. Are Robots Good at Giving Comforting Hugs?
D. Do Robot Hugs Feel the Same as Human Hugs?
D 9. C 10. A 11. A

根据第三段“For example, if the robot is too large or intimidating in design, people may feel uneasy about hugging it. Therefore, it is important for researchers to carry out further studies to ensure that hug robots are designed in a way that supports acceptance and comfort.(例如,如果机器人外形过大或者intimidating,人们拥抱它时可能会感到不安。因此,研究人员有必要开展进一步研究,确保拥抱机器人的设计能让人们愿意接受、使用起来感觉舒适。)”可知,该词与后文“comfort”形成对比,应表示“让人不安、害怕的”的意思。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“During the study, volunteers who received hugs from Moffully-Ⅱ showed a preference for hugs with gestures over those without gestures.(在这项研究中,接受Moffully-Ⅱ拥抱的志愿者更喜欢带有手势的拥抱,而不是没有手势的拥抱。)”
通读全文特别是根据第二段“So, how can this problem be solved? Scientists have suggested developing social robots that can hug people. These robots could probably offer lonely people the positive benefits of getting hugged.(那么,这个问题该如何解决?科学家提议研发可以拥抱人的社交机器人。这些机器人或许能为孤独的人带来拥抱带来的种种益处。)”可知,全文围绕拥抱机器人这一新事物展开,探讨人们对拥抱机器人的接受度,所以A选项“Are You Ready to Hug a Robot?(你准备好拥抱机器人了吗?)”最贴合文意。

When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team, he remembered the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried, “Our feet are hot!” Their games had been played on artificial turf (人工草坪), which can get so hot that it burns. To solve this problem, Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water-storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation (蒸发).
As a hydrologist, Cirkel studies the water cycle. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater about 8.5cm below a playing field. As this water evaporates, it cools the playing surface, similar to how sweat cools our bodies. Although natural grass is cooler, the new system does a better job of keeping the turf temperature down. On a hot June day, regular artificial grass reaches 62.2℃! That is 25℃ hotter than natural grass, while the new system is only 1.7℃ warmer than the real grass.
The new turf system looks like a sandwich. The artificial grass goes on top, followed by filler material, with the rainwater storage below it. The team included a waterproof liner and used fiber filler instead of rubber to improve performance. Plastic blocks in the storage area have holes for water flow.
The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests — two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with real grass, while the last had standard artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface.
“The new system is a good effort and a good step forward,” says Vasilis Vasiliou, a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn. He likes the new idea, even though it doesn’t solve all the problems with artificial turf, for example, artificial grass has harmful chemicals, which are bad for players.
12. What is a problem about artificial turf?
A. It wastes plenty of water. B. It results in light pollution.
C. It gets too hot in the sun. D. It is soft for soccer games.
13. What can be inferred about the field tests?
A. They were like the sandwiches. B. They showed a cool success.
C. They stopped real grass growing. D. They were carried out indoors.
14. What is Vasilis Vasiliou’s attitude to the new system?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Uncaring.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Disadvantage of Artificial Turf B. Discovering the Secret of Natural Grass
C. A Practical Way to Collect Rainwater D. Using Rainwater to Cool Artificial Turf
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

Charlie was a little boy of ten. He was such a good boy that everyone loved him a lot. Due to his father’s job, his family moved to a new city, where he was admitted into a new school. As Charlie was a good boy, most of his new classmates became his good friends soon. The teachers also praised Charlie for his intelligence (智力) and good behavior.
But there was one boy in the class who did not like Charlie at all! His name was Bill and he was a very naughty boy, so no one liked him. He found that Charlie was a quiet boy, so he started making trouble for his new classmate. But Charlie still kept quiet and did not complain to the class teacher. When Charlie’s parents learned about Bill, they wanted to go to school and complain about this naughty boy’s behavior. But Charlie stopped them and said, “Mom, Dad, please do not worry. Everything will be all right.”
Days went by and the time came for the annual sports meeting at the school. Charlie was also good at sports and he was participating in a number of events. Bill was participating in the sack race (套袋跑), though he could not run very fast because of his fat body. When Bill saw that Charlie won first prize in the 100-meter race, he felt very jealous (妒忌的) and decided that he would not let it happen in the sack race.
As planned, Bill tried to push Charlie while jumping on the track (跑道) during the sack race. But he lost his balance and fell down! His leg was badly injured and he could not even stand up by himself. Because he was unpopular among his friends, no one turned up to help him!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Charlie noticed what had happened. Without thinking twice, he stopped his race and rushed over to Bill. Seeing Bill lying on the ground in pain, Charlie gently comforted him and made a great effort to help Bill up, as Bill was much heavier. Other classmates stared in surprise, wondering why Charlie chose to give up the race to help the boy who had always troubled him. Charlie just held Bill’s arm firmly and took Bill to the school doctor’s step by step.
With Charlie’s help, Bill was carefully checked at the doctor’s. Luckily, Bill felt much better after some treatment. He just needed a good rest for several days. “You lost this sack race only because of me!” Bill lowered his head and apologized in a guilty voice. Charlie smiled and told him that helping a friend is more important than winning a race. Deeply touched by his reply, Bill promised to be a good boy like Charlie. After that, they became good friends and everybody was quite amazed at Bill’s big change. Sometimes, kindness can make a big difference, which changes a person a lot.

D
