Marmots (土拨鼠) are amazing animals. They are 50 to 70 cm long and weigh 4 to 24 pounds. They have round bodies, small ears and thick fur.
Marmots are one of the ancient animals. Some of them have been on the earth since the Ice Age. They live in Europe, North America and Asia.
Marmots usually live in groups, but some live by themselves. When in danger, they make loud sounds to remind others and then run back to their holes quickly.
Marmots are vigorous during the day. In the morning, they wake up early to jump and play on the grass, and some look for food. In the afternoon, they are still busy. They eat and run after each other. Their food is fresh grass and leaves and wild flowers. To get ready for the long cold winter, they eat lots of food in summer and store fat in their bodies.
When winter comes, some marmots sleep for months to save energy (能量) and live through the cold winter. They hardly move or eat in this long rest and their bodies work very slowly. They can live up to 13 or 15 years in good living conditions (条件).

①Many people believe that only humans can use special calls to tell each other apart. But a new study on wild magpies shows something surprising. These clever black-and-white birds can recognise their family members with special sounds. The research was carried out by a team of animal scientists, and the amazing result has drawn wide attention around the world.
② Magpies live in small family groups. They spend lots of time looking for food together and take good care of their young. ▲ . When a magpie finds danger nearby, such as a snake or a cat, it will send out a sharp sound to warn all its family members at once.
③ To test their idea, scientists recorded many different calls from magpies living in different areas. Then they played these sounds to the magpies and carefully watched their responses.
④ The results showed that magpies could tell whether the sound came from their own family or strangers. However, the scientists also found that magpies did not react to every single call. They paid attention mainly to calls from their close relatives.

Many people think that only humans and a few clever animals like dolphins can solve problems. But scientists have found that crows may be just as clever as a seven-year-old child.
Crows live all over the world. They are about half a metre long, with black feathers and strong beaks. What makes them special is not their size but their brains.
In one test, scientists put some food at the bottom of a tall glass filled with water. The food was too far down for the birds to reach. The crows looked at it for a moment, and then dropped small stones into the water, one after another. Slowly the water rose, and the food came up. Dinner was ready!
Crows can use tools, too. Some of them break off a small stick, bend one end of it, and use it to pull insects out of a hole. Others drop nuts onto the road so that cars can break them open. They even wait for the traffic light to turn red before they fly down to pick up the food.
A crow never forgets a face, either. If a person once catches a crow, the bird may remember that face for years — and it will tell its family and friends about it.
So the next time you see a crow, look again. The small black bird on the wall may be one of the cleverest animals on the planet.

13.What do some crows do with nuts?
A.They hide them under the ground for winter.
B.They give them to other birds as gifts.
C.They put them on the road and let cars break them open.
D.They use them to catch insects in the trees.
14.Why does the writer mention the traffic light?
A.To show that crows can read traffic signs.
B.To show that crows are clever enough to wait safely.
C.To explain why the roads are dangerous to birds.
D.To tell readers what colours crows can see.
15.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to catch a crow in a city. B.Why crows are afraid of people.
C.How clever crows are. D.Where crows build their nests.
If you take a walk in a forest and look up, you’ll notice something amazing: the treetops don’t actually touch each other. Tiny gaps (缺口) appear between them, creating a special phenomenon (现象) called “crown shyness”. This interesting action shows us how trees communicate and live together in the ecosystem.
Trees like redwoods and ginkgo trees use this method to stay healthy and lively. They’re always competing for sunlight and water—the most important things for their survival. By keeping a certain distance (距离) from their neighbors, they protect their young shoots and leaves from damage (损坏). This wise action also helps stop harmful insects and diseases from spreading (传播) to other trees, just like we protect ourselves from sickness.
In fact, this behavior plays an important role in the whole forest ecosystem. Healthy trees are home to many creatures like ants and various birds. They store carbon and clean our air, making our environment better for all humans. We should understand how important it is to protect our forests, as they are closely connected with our environment.
So next time when you see trees standing with space between them, remember they’re teaching us how to be good neighbors in nature. Whether you’re a tree or a human, sharing space wisely and protecting each other brings happiness to everyone in this world.

B.Eating healthy food to become taller and stronger.
C.Not standing too close to a friend who has a cold.
D.Sharing toys with friends to make everyone happy.
18.According to paragraph 3, what will probably happen if healthy trees are damaged?
A.We will live a much happier life.
B.Many birds may lose their homes.
C.The air we breathe will be cleaner.
D.The planet will be better for all humans.
19.According to the writer, what is the key to being a “good neighbor”?
A.Staying far away from each other all the time.
B.Being the strongest and getting the best things.
C.Sharing space smartly and looking after each other.
D.Living together and sharing everything with each other.
20.What is the main purpose of this text?

Trees are one of the oldest plants of our Earth. They keep our air clean, make less pollution, make water cleaner and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to stop animals from going near.
At the age of four, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face many difficulties later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults (成年植株). They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. It gives us shade and provides a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we all learn how to protect the adult tree, it will live healthily for many years.
Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, older trees are still very important in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it dies, it can be a home to small animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life. When looking at the life of a tree, we should enjoy every minute of its life and take care of the tree!

A film called Niu Lai is very popular this year. Niu Lai, a newborn calf (小牛), is the main character of the film. Cattle (牛) are common animals in our lives. They are one of the largest farm animals. In traditional Chinese culture, cattle are not just farm animals, they show the spirit of being industrious. This is because they spend most of their time on farm work and no other farm animals work so hard for people year after year.
In the movie, cattle walk on two legs like humans. But in real life, they can’t. Why? One main reason is their heavy weight. According to the University of California, most cattle weigh between 450 and 650 kilograms, and some can weigh over 800 kilograms. So walking on four legs helps hold up their heavy bodies better.
How cattle carry their weight is important. Like horses and sheep, cattle put more weight on their front legs — that’s where the heaviest part of their body is. To stand on two legs, cattle need to move their weight back, and this is difficult for them.
▲ Many bears are also big and walk on four legs. But they often stand up to see better or to reach things. Why? The secret is in the “feet”. According to China Science Communication, bears walk with their whole feet touching the ground, just like us. This lets bears stand up well even on two feet. But cattle only walk on the tips (尖端) of their “feet”. This, along with the heavy weight, makes it hard to stand for a long time.
Humans walked on all fours at first. Slowly, nature helped humans learn to walk on two legs. This great change helped early humans live better. It’s easier to pick fruits and it freed up hands to carry food or babies. Different animals get different body skills from nature. The film creates an interesting world where Niu Lai walks on two legs. However, real-life animals follow nature’s rules.

A. B. C. D.
40.Which question can be answered from the text?
A.Why do cattle have front legs?
B.How much does a newborn calf weigh?
C.Do bears walk faster than cattle?
D.How does walking on two legs help people?

People often use the saying “as busy as a bee” to describe hard-working people in English culture. For a long time, people thought bees were just mindless insects. They worked all day for honey and couldn’t relax or feel anything. However, a new study from Queen Mary University of London has changed this traditional idea. Many scientists used to think play was a special activity only for animals with complex (复杂的) brains, such as dogs and monkeys. Few expected that tiny insects like bees could also have playful moments. The researchers did lots of careful tests to learn about bees’ activities. They found that bees love playing with small wooden balls in their free time. The study also showed clear differences in bees’ playing habits. Younger bees were more active in rolling balls than older ones, and adult male bees (成年雄性) spent more time playing than female (雌性) bees. Just like young kids, young bees seem more lively and are willing to try new things for fun.
In one special test, 45 bees were given two choices. They could fly straight to get sweet food, or play with colorful wooden balls first and then get their treats. Surprisingly, most bees chose to enjoy a short period of play before eating, which showed their simple need to relax.
This research is very meaningful. It tells us that bees are not cold and mindless insects as we once thought. Instead, they have active minds and simple feelings. Insects are much smarter and more thoughtful than we used to think. Learning about bees’ special lives helps us better know the natural world around us. It also reminds us not to judge living things only by our old common sense.

49.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.Older bees rolled balls more actively. B.Bees are smarter than monkeys.
C.Young bees like trying new things. D.Scientists thought all insects could fly.
50.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the new study?

16.What is “crown shyness”?
A.Trees fighting for sunlight and water.
B.Gaps between treetops that do not touch.
C.A kind of bird that lives on trees.

36.Which of the following can best explain the word “industrious”?
A.hard-working B.strong C.powerful D.busy
37.Why can bears stand up on two legs more easily than cattle?
A.They are smarter than cattle.
B.They have stronger front legs.
C.They walk with their whole feet.
D.They put more weight on their back legs.
38.Which can be put in “ ▲ ” in paragraph 4?
A.Cattle want to walk on two legs.
B.Weight is not the only reason.
C.Bears can hardly stand on two feet.
D.Weight causes lots of problems.
39.Which picture shows the same way of moving as cattle?
A. B. C. D.
40.Which question can be answered from the text?
A.Why do cattle have front legs?
B.How much does a newborn calf weigh?
C.Do bears walk faster than cattle?
D.How does walking on two legs help people?
【答案】36.A 37.C 38.B 39.C 40.D
根据第一段中“This is because they spend most of their time on farm work and no other farm animals work so hard for people year after year.”可知,牛的特质是常年辛勤劳作,由此可推知,“industrious”的含义是“勤奋的”,与hard-working意思一致。
37.细节理解题。根据第四段中“According to China Science Communication, bears walk with their whole feet touching the ground, just like us. This lets bears stand up well even on two feet.”
根据第四段中“But cattle only walk on the tips (尖端) of their ‘feet’.”可知,牛依靠脚的尖端行走,图3的芭蕾舞者用足尖(脚的尖端)站立移动,与牛的脚部着地行走方式一致。
40.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Humans walked on all fours at first. Slowly, nature helped humans learn to walk on two legs. This great change helped early humans live better. It’s easier to pick fruits and it freed up hands to carry food or babies.”可知,文中明确说明了双腿行走对人类的帮助,能够回答对应的问题“How does walking on two legs help people?”。
