Have you ever seen a number trick that always seems to work? Take the number 1089 as an example. At first, it looks like an ordinary number. But after a few steps, many three-digit numbers can lead to it. Isn’t that surprising?
Let’s try a quick experiment.
Start with any three-digit number. Make sure that:
●the first digit and the last digit are different;
●the difference between the first digit and the last digit is at least 2.
Now follow the steps below.
Amazing, right? If you follow the rules carefully, you will reach the same number: 1089.
One famous mathematician who enjoyed number puzzles was Martin Gardner. He wrote many books and articles to show that maths could be playful, beautiful and full of surprises. Gardner believed that number tricks were not just games. They could help students think logically and ask better questions.
16. Which number can be used to start the 1089 trick?
A. 555. B. 313. C. 100. D. 864.
17. If you get 396 after finishing the third step in the trick, what should you do next?
A. Add 3, 9 and 6 together to make a new number.
B. Reverse it into 693 and add the two numbers.
C. Change it into 639 and subtract it from 963.
D. Stop the experiment because the answer is already 1089.
18. What could number tricks help students do according to Gardner?
A. Remember every three-digit number easily.
B. Learn to think in a logical way and ask better questions.
C. Get the highest score in every maths test.
D. Write many books about maths like Gardner.
B
For the first time in history, two Chinese mathematicians, Wang Hong and Deng Yu, have won the Fields Medal—the highest prize in maths. People often call it the “Nobel Prize of maths”. This is also the first time that two mathematicians with a Chinese maths education background have taken home this top honour together. For Wang, the prize is even more meaningful: she has become the third woman to receive the medal since 1936.
Wang was born in Guilin in 1991 and now works as a professor at New York University. Her maths journey was full of surprises. At the age of 16, she entered Peking University. However, there was only one admission spot* for maths students from her hometown, so she had to choose Earth and Space Sciences first. Luckily, she later found that she could change her major by passing a transfer exam, and she caught the chance at once. “I dreamed of studying maths as a little child,” Wang said. That lifelong love pushed her to work on the hardest unsolved problems in her field. Whenever her research got stuck, she would do sports to relax, calm down and try again. She also believes teamwork matters, because talking with others often brings fresh ideas.
Deng Yu, 37, comes from Shenzhen. He showed great talent in maths early. He won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (国际数学奥林匹克竞赛) at just 17. Like Wang, he studied at Peking University before continuing his study at MIT. Together with his team, he finally solved a maths problem that nobody had managed to work out for 125 years.
Their stories tell us that great success is never built on talent alone. It grows from hard work, curiosity and the courage to keep going. Truly great mathematicians are far more than bookworms—they look at the world with open and curious eyes.
*admission spot: If you get an admission spot, the school allows you to study there.
19. Why did Wang Hong choose Earth and Space Sciences at first?
A. She was more interested in space science then.
B. There was only one maths admission spot for local students.
C. She failed the maths entrance exam.
D. Her teacher advised her to make this choice.
20. What does the underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Great success. B. Talent. C. Hard work. D. Curiosity.
21. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Fields Medal: Nobel Prize of Maths
B. Wang Hong’s Special College Life
C. Two Chinese Mathematicians and Their Stories
D. How to Solve Difficult Maths Problems
22. Where is the passage most probably from?
A. A science news website. B. A cooking magazine.
C. A travel guidebook. D. A science dictionary.

One of the most unexpected stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes from Cabo Verde, a nation that many soccer fans may not know much about. It is the third smallest nation by population that has ever entered the World Cup.
Cabo Verde, or the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island nation located in the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital city is Praia. Separated from the African continent (非洲大陆) by the Atlantic, Cabo Verde has developed a special identity.
This identity is seen in its flag. Blue represents the ocean and sky, white and red mean peace and progress, and the 10 yellow stars stand for Cabo Verde’s 10 main islands.
The name “Cabo Verde” comes from Portuguese (葡萄牙语). It was given by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century when they discovered the islands. The name translates as “green cape” in English. Interestingly, the islands themselves are not especially green because of their dry climate.
The country’s official language is Portuguese, However, the language most commonly spoken in everyday life is Cape Verdean Creole. It mixes Portuguese with different West African languages.
For Europeans, Cabo Verde is a popular place to enjoy sunshine in winter, with January temperatures around 25℃. The hottest months are August and September when temperatures can reach over 30℃. During this period, however, many people come to Boa Vista, which is the easternmost island. They go there to see the turtles laying their eggs on the beaches at night—an amazing scene.
23. Why are the islands NOT especially green though their name means “green cape”?
A. Because the sea water kills plants. B. Because it has little rain there
C. Because people cut down most trees. D. Because the temperature is too low
24. We can infer from the passage that________.
A. many Europeans choose Cabo Verde to spend winter holidays
B. tourists can watch turtles lay eggs all year round in Boa Vista
C. the name “Cabo Verde” describes the real natural environment of the islands
D. Cabo Verde is the smallest country by population to enter the World Cup
25. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To ask more people to travel to Cabo Verde.
B. To compare different languages spoken in African countries
C. To show the importance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
D. To introduce some facts about little-known Cabo Verde.

It was the exciting moment of my life. We were waiting for instructions from ground control. The minutes seemed like hours. Finally, we took off. We were travelling so fast—it only took about 10 minutes to get into orbit (轨道). At first, it was a shock to my body. I wasn’t feeling great. However, I soon adjusted and felt better. At last, we reached the space station—my new home for a while! Let me tell you what life in space is like.
Eating in space
I used to worry about the food in space. But in fact, we can choose from many types of food, such as fruit, nuts, chicken, beef and seafood. We have different types of tea, juice and soup as well. It turns out that eating can be a pleasure in space too!
Working in space
We are very busy every day. Being an astronaut is hard because you do not experience gravity when you are in orbit. Everything flies up including you, so simple tasks seem harder and take longer to do. When we go outside, we have to move very carefully. We can’t afford to make any mistakes, so it can be stressful sometimes. However, it is an amazing experience to go outside the space station in a spacesuit. The view of the Earth is great!
Sleeping in space
Just like on Earth, I go to bed at a certain time. However, I sleep in a sleeping bag in a small room, and I have to stick my sleeping bag to the wall. This stops me from floating around the room and hitting something by mistake!
Exercising in space
Exercise is an important part of our daily life in space. When we live in space, we start losing muscle. Exercise can slow down the muscle loss. Luckily, we have a small gym on the space station. However, the exercise equipment is very different from what we use on Earth.
*gravity: A force that pulls objects to the ground.

●the first digit and the last digit are different;

【答案】23. B 24. A 25. D

VII. 任务型阅读 (共5小题, 计10分)
阅读下面材料, 根据材料内容, 完成下列各题。
51. How might the writer feel while waiting for instructions from ground control?
He/She might feel ________________.
52. Which word in Paragraph I has a similar meaning to “be used to something”?
It is “________________”.
53. Why do simple tasks seem harder and take longer to do in space?
Because of the lack of ________________.
54. What is the benefit of exercising in space?
It helps us ________________.
55. What is the passage mainly about? (In no more than 6 words)
It’s mainly about ________________.
