Recently, an increasing number of young people have turned to a rather unusual method to help with their stress: they are hugging trees. Although it might sound a bit strange or even silly at first glance, there is actually a solid scientific basis behind the act of tree-hugging.
The famous US scientist Edward O. Wilson once said that humans are naturally born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is in their DNA. This deep-rooted connection, often called “biophilia,” helps to explain exactly why people generally prefer peaceful green views over concrete city views. It also perfectly explains why people are so drawn to love and care for cute pets in their daily lives.
Furthermore, there is a specific chemical called cortisol (皮质醇) working inside our body. It acts as an indicator that shows how much stress a person is currently experiencing. The general rule is that the worse a person’s feelings are, the higher his or her cortisol level will be. When the brain senses that a person feels worried, angry, or very sad, it responds by making more cortisol. Hugging trees, however, acts as a natural remedy that helps lower this cortisol level, which in turn makes us feel calmer and better.
Although hugging a tree is highly helpful to us, it is equally important to remember that we shouldn’t harm nature while doing it. Many tiny, delicate creatures and small animals make the tree their home, and they are often too small to be seen by the human eye. So, always remember to hug trees softly—just like how you would gently hug a close friend!
56.What does the sentence “Humans’ love for nature is in their DNA” mean?
A.DNA is very important to humans. B.Humans are born to love nature.
C.Humans love to do studies on DNA. D.Humans like city views better.
57.Which of the following best shows the relationship between bad feelings and the level of cortisol? (x=bad feelings, y=the level of cortisol)
A. B. C. D.
58.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.How long we should hug a tree. B.Why hugging trees can reduce stress.
C.What scientists will study in the future. D.How to hug a tree without harming nature.

Van Gogh painted sunflowers for the first time in the summer of 1886. Two years later, his interest appeared again after he settled in Arles. After he had invited the French artist Paul Gauguin, whom he admired, to join his Studio of the South, he began painting sunflowers to brighten up the whitewashed walls of the yellow house he was living in, not far from the town’s railway station.
Gauguin accepted Van Gogh’s invitation. When he began dragging his heels (脚后跟), Van Gogh painted the last two of four original Sunflowers for the modest bedroom where his guest would sleep following his arrival that autumn. “Van Gogh saw Sunflowers for Gauguin’s bedroom as a way of attracting his friend to come from Brittany,” said Bailey.
According to Martin Gayford, “Gauguin was very surprised bySunflowers, which he repeatedly praised and asked for as a gift.Years later, Gauguin himself painted some sunflower pictures.”
Van Gogh’s Sunflowers paintings stand for (代表) his relationship with Gauguin. “I think he painted them for the joy of it,” said Jansen. “Van Gogh was at the height of his powers in the summer of 1888,” explained Bailey. “He painted Sunflowers quickly and with great energy and confidence.” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo in late August, “I’m painting quickly now, which won’t surprise you when it’s a question of painting large Sunflowers.”
Van Gogh recognized at once that he had created something important and that his sunflowers were so different. As he told Theo in January 1889, other artists were known for painting other flowers, “The sunflower is mine.”, in fact, explains the reason for the popularity of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers today.

David, a policeman, came to a small wooden house about two miles up the mountain to get Cal Richards, an armed and dangerous killer. Through a broken window, he saw an old man watching him closely. When he stepped into the house, he found the old man was holding a gun in his hands.
“Government man, aren’t you?” said the old man.
“Yes,” David replied with a friendly smile. “You must be Pappy Richards.”
“Sure. I’m Cal’s pa. And you’re not going to get him.” The gun pointed at David.
David looked around the house and didn’t see any sign of Cal. “I’ve been sent to do it,” he said. “But I can see he isn’t here today. I guess I’ll have to come again.” Just then he caught sight of a violin hanging on the wall. “Who plays the violin?” he asked.
For a moment there was silence. In fact, Cal’s pa played the violin best in the area, but he did not answer, with his gun still pointing at David.
David crossed the room to the instrument and felt sweat on his forehead, but he took the violin from the wall as calmly as if he were a welcome visitor. He began to play the violin, one tune(曲子) after another. He was playing better than he had ever played in his life.
The old man stood there, attracted. The hatred in his eyes was giving way to a look of wonder. The gun was pointed towards the floor. He began to beat time, tapping one foot on the dirt floor. When the final notes of the tune died away, the old man placed the gun in a corner.
“Well, stranger,” the old man said, “you play the violin excellently. Maybe you’ll stay for dinner and play some more for me.”
After they had eaten, they sat in the spring sunshine outside the house. They talked about violin tunes. Not

Then, he said in a thick voice, “I---well, I’ll have a talk with Cal. I think he might give himself up tomorrow. You be at the police station at noon.”

Have you ever noticed the sidewalks for the blind in everyday life? They are very important for the people who can’t see. Yu Guanbin, a blind man from Shenzhen, showed us the new changes to the sidewalks for the blind in his city.
Unluckily, Yu became blind over 10 years ago. At that time, it was not easy for him to go outside, as there were no sidewalks for the blind in many places across the city. So Yu easily got lost. He had to stay at home as much as possible. “However, things have changed a lot recently. Most roads in the city now have sidewalks for the blind. I go to work on foot every day. It only takes me 15 minutes. I can also walk to a nearby bread shop to buy breakfast and take the underground to my friends’ homes on weekends,” said Yu.
What’s more, the new sidewalks are more user-friendly. For example, the sidewalks are 30 centimetres to 50 centimetres away from the green plants along the roads. “Such careful design makes us feel safer while walking,” Yu said. “On my way to the office, a new manhole cover (井盖) is also put into use. The sidewalk can lie over the manhole cover so we don’t need to make a turn like before.”
Now, most roads have sidewalks for the blind. However, there are still some problems. Some people misuse (滥用) the sidewalks by leaving their cars there. Also, blind people need something that can make sound at traffic lights to help them cross the roads. Yu hopes to see more great changes in the future.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
71.Who is Yu Guanbin?
72.Why was it hard for Yu to go outside in the past?

第三部分 阅读 (共两节,满分40分)
第一节 阅读理解。(共15题;每题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Recently, an increasing number of young people have turned to a rather unusual method to help with their stress: they are hugging trees.
【答案】56.B 57.A 58.D

58.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Although hugging a tree is highly helpful to us, it is equally important to remember that we shouldn’t harm nature while doing it.”以及“always remember to hug trees softly”可知,本段主要说明如何在抱树的同时不伤害自然。
B

Not a word was said about Cal Richards.
About two hours later, David stood up and said, “Sorry! I must be getting back to the town.”
The old man sat, deep in thought. At last, he said, “I like the way you talk, and I like the way you play the violin. I guess you’re a good guy.” He paused as if it were hard to go on. Then, he said in a thick voice, “I---well, I’ll have a talk with Cal. I think he might give himself up tomorrow. You be at the police station at noon.”
The next day, as the town clock struck twelve, an old man came up the street towards the police station. With him was a young fellow whose appearance told of many days in hiding.

a. David had a dinner with Cal’s pa.

With him was a young fellow whose appearance told of many days in hiding.” The hatred in his eyes was giving way to a look of wonder.”可以印证。
65.主旨大意题。原本对立的两个人,依靠音乐消除隔阂、互相理解,所以“Music is power”指音乐能够帮助人们更好地理解彼此。

73.How long does it take Yu to walk to work now?

【答案】71.A blind man from Shenzhen. 72.Because there were no sidewalks for the blind in many places. 73.15 minutes. 74.Yes, they are. 75.More great changes.

My English Learning Methods
Hello everyone, I’m Li Hua. It’s my honor to share my English learning experience here. In the past, I had trouble remembering new words and understanding grammar, so I often felt stressed.
To make progress, I tried two useful ways. I kept an English diary every day to put new words into use. Also, I watched short English movies at weekends. It greatly improved my listening skills.
