Last Friday, our class took a special trip to an old town Stone Village. All the houses and streets were built with old stones, and our guide told us some were more than 200 years old — older than our grandparents!
Our first stop was a small family bakery (烘焙坊). A friendly woman showed us how to make our own bread in the traditional way. While our bread baked, we visited the village museum. We saw many old farming tools (工具) there. The guide let me try carrying a wooden water bucket (桶). I couldn’t believe how children used to carry these heavy buckets every day! “This is how children carried water every day in the past,” he said.
After lunch, the whole class played traditional village games on the old street. The sack (麻袋) race was the funniest. We hopped around in bags and laughed when we fell over. Some children from the village also joined in it, showing us how to play.
As the sun began to set, we sat under an old oak tree and drew pictures of the village. I drew the bakery with smoke coming out of its chimney (烟囱). Watching the golden light on the stone walls, I truly understood how different life was here in the past. The trip wasn’t just fun — we had traveled back in time.

A. It had modern buildings. B. Old things and activities were kept there.
C. It had a family bakery. D. It had traditional food.
9. Why was the wooden bucket hard to carry?
A. It was very heavy. B. It was too big. C. It was too small. D. It was made of stone.
10. What does the sack race show about traditional village life?
A. Fun games need a lot of money. B. Simple things can bring people a lot of fun.
C. Old games were not fun at all. D. Children in the village never played games.
11. How did the writer feel at the end of the trip?
A. He felt surprised at how different life was in the past. B. He felt bored and tired.
C. He didn’t feel fun. D. He felt angry about the long trip.
D
Now, scientists use modern ways to get information to tell us what the weather will be like. But what did people do before modern technology? Well, not so long ago, people lived much closer to nature. People made predictions (预测) about the weather by watching what was happening in the insect (昆虫) world. Sometimes they were right, and sometimes they weren’t.
My grandfather spent his whole life as a farmer in Canada. I still remember his stories about how to predict the weather. For example, in summer, he would often stop to watch the anthills — those piles (堆) of earth in front of the ants’ homes. “Look closely at the anthills in July,” Grandpa said. “If the anthills are high in July, a snowy winter may arrive.” Of course, as a kid, I believed my grandfather. But you know what? The anthills are often correct. Not always, but often enough to make me a believer.
In September, Grandpa would often point out a woolly caterpillar (毛毛虫) on a sunny day. “Watch the orange circle around its belly (腹部). If it’s wide and full, we’re sure to have a warm and easy winter. If it’s thin, be careful! The winter will be severe.”
I am older now. I get my weather mostly from the television or the Internet. But I still stop to watch the anthills in July, and of course, the woolly caterpillars in September. Older people can teach us many things. My grandfather was not a scientist, but he knew a lot about insects and the weather.
12. According to Grandpa, if the anthills are high in July, maybe it will be ______.
A. a rainy winter B. a snowy winter C. a long and cold winter D. a warm and easy winter
13. What does the underlined word “severe” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Very hot. B. Very warm. C. Very cool. D. Very cold.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The writer doesn’t believe in modern weather reports.
B. The writer still trusts his grandfather’s ways of predicting weather.
C. The writer has become a scientist studying insects.
D. The writer stops watching insects for weather predictions.
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Power of Observation B. Watching Insects to Predict the Weather
C. Weather Report in Modern Times D. Different Ways to Make Predictions

School trips are more than just a day off from classes. They are good for students’ learning and growth. Let’s explore why these trips are meaningful.
First, school trips help students understand what they learn in class better. For example, visiting a history museum makes stories in books come to life. 16
Second, trips teach useful skills. 17 A class hiking trip might need teamwork to find the way. Buying lunch at a zoo teaches students how to use money. These activities help students build confidence (自信) and feel more sure of themselves.
Moreover, school trips help students get along better. Away from school, classmates often become closer friends. 18 Outside the classroom, teachers also get to know students in a more relaxing way.
19 Walking in a forest may make someone like nature more. A student who never liked art might enjoy it after visiting a museum.
In short, school trips are both fun and helpful. 20 That’s why these trips are so great!
A. Students learn to work together and solve problems.
B. When they go to a zoo, learning about animals in class becomes more fun.
C. Quiet students might talk more with others when walking around a park.
D. They make the world a big classroom and help students learn in many ways.

F. Finally, many students develop interests or hobbies during these visits.

Many animals live in the mountains or on the farm. Bad weather can sometimes bring them danger. So weather data is useful for helping animals. Also, weather data can help fishermen decide whether to sail (出海) out or not.
