Today is the Spring Festival, the most important festival for Chinese families. It’s a busy and happy day at home. Everyone is getting ready for the big family dinner.

Look! My mum is in the kitchen. She is washing fresh vegetables, like green cabbages and red carrots. Next to her, my dad is cutting meat into small pieces. He says, “If I cut it too big, your mum will say I’m lazy!” We all laugh. In the living room, my grandma is sitting at the table and writing “Fu” on red paper with a brush, and today she lets my 5-year-old sister try too. The little girl is holding the brush, and her “Fu” looks like a little sun. “It’s a lucky sun!” Grandma says, sticking (粘贴) it on the door. Outside, my brother is putting up spring couplets (春联) on the front door. But the wind keeps blowing the paper away. Maybe I can help him put up the couplets.

After some time, Mum shouts, “Dinner is nearly ready!” We all stop what we’re doing and walk towards the kitchen. The table is already set with different kinds of food. I can’t wait to sit down and enjoy the big dinner with my family on this special day.

4. What are the family busy preparing for?

A. A family dinner.  B. A school party.

A. The door is too high for him.

C

Once upon a time, there was a king. He had a big palace (宫殿) and a lot of money, but he often worried about what tomorrow might bring. He could not sleep well at night.

One day the king found a cobbler (鞋匠) in the market. The cobbler’s clothes were old and he looked very thin, but his smile was as bright as the moon.

“Surely you must worry. How could you smile so brightly?” the king walked close and asked.

“Today I got enough money fixing (修理) shoes to buy a piece of bread!”

“But what if not tomorrow?”

“Don’t worry,” the cobbler answered. “All will be well.”

This impressed (给……留下印象) the king, and when he left, he wanted to know what would happen if the cobbler could not get his bread.

The next morning in the market, the king made a new rule for the town: “No one can fix shoes now. If your shoes wear out (穿破), you must buy new ones.”

That evening, the king put on some old clothes and went to the cobbler’s small house. He looked through the window. To his surprise, the cobbler was drinking soup and still smiling!

The king knocked on the door. “Hello,” he said, “I want to see if you are OK.”

“The king made a new rule today! How can you buy your soup?” the king asked quickly.

“I helped an old woman carry heavy things,” the man said, “She was very kind and gave me some money for the soup. Would you like to have some? You look tired and hungry.”

“But what will you do tomorrow?” the king asked again.

The cobbler smiled. “Don’t worry. I think everything will be OK.”

The king went up and asked, “Do you know who I am?”

“Of course.” the man said, “You are the king.”

The king shook (摇动) his head and said, “I am the beggar (乞丐) who came to your door.”

8. Why did the king make the new rule?

A. Because he wanted to teach the cobbler a lesson.

B. Because he wanted to see if the cobbler would still be happy without his job.

C. Because he thought buying new shoes was better than fixing old ones.

D. Because he wanted the cobbler to come and work for him.

9. What is the right order of these events?page number 2
