Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes. So, I shouldn’t have been ____1____ when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But I was, because she has Down syndrome(唐氏综合症). My wife and I never told Lauren that she was ____2____. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I came in from work. My wife spoke slowly, her tone steady. “What Lauren’s trying to say is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.” Her words ____4____ in. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. But what could we do?
Mid-November, the season’s first basketball game arrived. It got off to a good start, but soon Verden, Lauren’s team, was behind. Lauren ____5____ followed the movement on the court and reacted to every shot. Even though she wasn’t playing, she looked as if she were having the time of her life.
Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by seventeen points when Lauren was called in for the game! She ____6____ the others fairly well. From her agile movement and eager expression, I knew she was desperate to score for her team. Then they passed Lauren the ball. She ____7____ it. She shot. She scored! A few minutes later, Lauren joined us in the stands. “Did you see? I scored! I made a ____8____!”

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed an incredible change in their elder son: suddenly he seemed to talk far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up to (依偎) me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first in the list,” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.
14. “The door to his room is always shut” in the first paragraph suggests that the son ________.
A. keeps himself away from his parents B. doesn’t want to be disturbed
C. is always busy with his studies D. begins to dislike his parents
15. What troubles Tina and Mark most?
A. Their daughter isn’t as lovely as before.
B. They don’t know what to say to their daughter.
C. They can’t read their daughter’s mind exactly.
D. Their daughter talks with them only when she needs help.
16. Which of the following best explains “the wall of silence” in the last paragraph?
A. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.
B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents.
C. Teenagers talk little about their own lives.
D. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.
17. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Parents are unhappy with their growing children.
B. Parents should try to understand their teenagers.
C. Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers.
D. Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers.
A 15. C 16. D 17. B
根据第一段“But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed an incredible change in their elder son: suddenly he seemed to talk far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.(但去年夏天,乔安娜和亨利注意到他们的大儿子发生了惊人的变化:突然间,他和朋友聊天似乎远比和父母多。乔安娜说:“他房间的门总是关着。”)”可知,儿子把自己和父母隔离开来。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.(有时她想被当小女孩对待,有时像年轻女士。问题在于弄清什么时候是哪一种。)”可知,最让父母困扰的是无法准确判断/读懂女儿的心思。
【16题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.(他们先和朋友说,然后可能是老师,最后才是父母)”及前文孩子不再向父母敞开心扉,可知“the wall of silence(沉默之墙)”指青少年不愿过多与父母交谈、对父母沉默。
根据第四段中的“Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them.(了解青少年生活状况的父母最能帮助孩子。为了打破沉默之墙,父母应当创造机会理解孩子想说什么,并设法和他们交谈、写信沟通。)”可知,父母应当尽力理解青少年。
C
What makes people succeed? People are wondering it for a long time. Now, many researchers think there are two qualities which make the difference between men of great success and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent. Usually an outstanding man possesses both of them.
Together, these deep human urges count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. People are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most people meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, people think how terrible it would have been, had they missed the chance. They will probably have to force themselves to waken their curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start so as not to become discouraged? There was once a girl who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Later she became one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability? Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
18. What does the author aim to do in writing Paragraph 1?
A. To propose a definition. B. To make a comparison.
C. To reach a conclusion. D. To present an argument.
19. What does the example of Galileo tell us?
A. Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.
B. Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C. Creativity results from challenging authority.
D. Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
20. What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7?
A. Gaining success helps you become an expert.
B. The genius tends to get things done creatively.
C. Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
D. You should remain modest when approaching perfection.
21. What can you infer from the last sentence?
A. Start right now.
B. Everybody is alive.
C. You are too old to start.
D. You need to wait for the chance.
D 19. D 20. C 21. A
根据文章第一段“What makes people succeed? People are wondering it for a long time. Now, many researchers think there are two qualities which make the difference between men of great success and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent. Usually an outstanding man possesses both of them.
根据文章第二段“Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”
根据文章第六段“There was once a girl who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Later she became one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement. (曾经有个女孩,她无法让自己满意地插花。她对专家是如何做到的好奇不已。后来,她成为了插花专家,还写了关于插花的书。)”以及第七段“You haven’t any special ability? Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking.
根据文章最后一段“However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment. (无论你如何开始,记住没有比现在更好的开始时间了,因为你永远不会比此刻更充满活力。)”可知,这句话强调了立刻行动的重要性,即不要等待更好的时机或条件,因为现在就是最好的时机。故选A。
D
The sun was rising as we drove across the Minnesota state line to New York for my new Ph. D. program. The move was good for me professionally, but I worried about my husband and daughters. I also feared that I wouldn’t be able to give my kids the childhood they deserved.
Anne, our first daughter, came into the world when I was a junior majoring in biology in college. It was challenging to balance classes, work schedules, and being a mom. But I got it through, finding moments of delight along the way. On the nights when I was at home, I’d read my class notes out loud to my daughter. She’d respond by asking questions, such as “Mom, what are bacteria?” It helped us both learn.
After I graduated, I knew that I would need a Ph. D. to land the kind of job I wanted. I arrived in New York feeling more than the usual new-graduate-student anxiety. I also suffered from a more personal fear that I was selfish — my decision to invigorate my career was going to have long-term negative impacts on my kids.
Over the past year, though, I’ve started to let go of some of the worry. I’ve realized that not only have we adapted to our new situation, but things are getting better. My husband has landed a job that he is happy with. Anne has dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. Recently, while driving past the cancer institute I work at, Anne said, “Thinking about people having cancer is so sad, but I feel better knowing that you are researching it to help.”
Navigating academia as a young mother is hard, but it’s also rewarding. My kids are learning to look at the world through the lens of science, and watching their mom succeed inspires them. I look forward to seeing them follow my footsteps, whatever path they choose.
22. Which can best replace the underlined word “invigorate” in Paragraph 3?
A. Promote. B. Change. C. Create. D. Choose.
23. What can be inferred from Anne’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. People are afraid of having cancer.
B. Cancer is the No. 1 enemy of health.
C. Her mother takes her job seriously.
D. Anne is proud of her mother.
24. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Onwards and Upwards B. Double Gains of Mom’s Pursuit
C. Like Mother, Like Daughter D. The Generation Gap Narrowed by Love
A 23. D 24. B
根据第三段“I also suffered from a more personal fear that I was selfish — my decision to invigorate my career was going to have long-term negative impacts on my kids.(我还怀着更私人的恐惧,觉得自己自私——我决定invigorate我的事业会对孩子产生长期的负面影响。)”结合前文“I knew that I would need a Ph. D. to land the kind of job I wanted.(我知道我需要博士学位来得到想要的工作)”可知,她是在提升自己的职业生涯。“invigorate”意为“使有活力、提振、促进(发展)”,与promote(促进、推动)最接近。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段Anne的话“Thinking about people having cancer is so sad, but I feel better knowing that you are researching it to help.(想到人们患癌症很悲伤,但知道你在研究它来帮助别人让我感觉好些。)”
通读全文,并根据最后一段中的“Navigating academia as a young mother is hard, but it’s also rewarding. My kids are learning to look at the world through the lens of science, and watching their mom succeed inspires them.(作为一名年轻母亲在学术界打拼很艰难,但也有所收获。我的孩子们正学着用科学的视角看待世界,看着妈妈取得成功也激励着他们。)”可知,作者追求学业事业,自己有所收获,孩子也从中受益,是双向收获。B项“Double Gains of Mom’s Pursuit(母亲追求的双重收获)”是最贴切的标题。

In 1983, Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard, published Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. In the book, he presented one type of intelligence that everyone must develop if they want to be successful. That is emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to identify and regulate your own emotions. It means having a deep understanding of yourself, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, and handling reactions and emotions wisely. Emotional intelligence is critical for success in almost any field and it is especially important for high-stress environments, for example, when times are tough and when a person wants to quit or is fearful.
We all know highly emotional people. Rather than react wisely, they tend to let their emotions run their lives, often saying or doing something they may later regret. I’ve seen many people do this on social media, getting in arguments with loved ones over trivial stuff because they have different opinions. This inability to master the self leads to many struggles and heartaches for people.
Emotional intelligence does not mean being void (没有) of emotions. It means you know it is okay to be angry, just not out-of-control angry. You know it’s okay to feel hurt, but it is not okay to do something stupid in the name of revenge (报复). Many of us know people who are very intelligent, but allow their emotions to damage their lives.
Now, reflect on how you manage your emotions. Are you smart in the way you express what you’re feeling, especially when the pressure is on?
30. According to the passage, what is “emotional intelligence”?
31. How do highly emotional people deal with their emotions?
32. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
It’s important to keep your emotions under control, so when you get hurt, you should neither get angry nor do stupid things for revenge.
33. In your daily life, what can you do to better manage your emotions?
30. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to identify and regulate your own emotions.
31. Rather than react wisely, highly emotional people tend to let their emotions run their lives, often saying or doing something they may later regret.
32. It’s important to keep your emotions under control, so when you get hurt, you should neither get angry nor do stupid things for revenge.
According to the passage, it’s okay for you to feel angry, just not out-of-control angry.
33. I manage my emotions in two ways. Firstly, I like writing down my bad feelings, which enables me to let go of them so that I can focus more on what makes me cheerful. Secondly, when conflict occurs, it helps to talk openly about my feelings and thoughts.
I improve my emotional control from two aspects. When in conflict with others, I address it with a shoe-shifting view, which helps me better understand them and avoid highly emotional response. As for my negative feelings, I prefer to let them out in a healthy way, such as running or singing, which benefits me emotionally.
