My Unforgettable Holiday
Last summer,I went to my grandparents'home in the countryside with my parents. The village was
quieter and greener than the city, and the air was much fresher.
Every morning I helped Grandpa clean up the yard and take out the rubbish."Could I help you with the
dishes?"I asked Grandma one evening. She smiled and said yes,and we washed them together.
Behind the house there was a big ginkgo tree.It is one of the oldest trees in the village-more than a
thousand years old.To me,it was the most amazing living thing that summer.
I also met Tom,a boy from the next village. He is as friendly as my best classmate, and more outgoing
than me.We flew kites in the fields and soon became true friends. That holiday is unforgettable because of the
people and the tree I will never forget.

At the beginning of this term, our class got a new student, Daniel. He came from a small village in the mountains, and everything in our school was new to him.
Daniel was different from most of us. He didn’t have a phone, and he knew nothing about the computer games we talked about after class. Some of my classmates thought he was strange, so they didn’t talk to him. I didn’t say anything, either.
One rainy afternoon, I stayed in the classroom because I couldn’t go home. Daniel was there, too. He took out a small notebook and began to draw. I looked at it and was surprised: he was drawing the whole school — every tree, every window, and even the birds on the roof. His pictures were better than anything I could draw.
“Can you show me how to draw like that?” I asked.
“Sure,” he said with a smile. “But you have to be patient. It took me three years.”
From that day on, Daniel and I often sat together after class. I taught him to use the computer, and he taught me to look at the world more carefully. I found that Daniel was not strange at all — he was just different.
Now I understand: people are like different colours in a picture. Alone, each colour is nothing special. Together, they make something beautiful.
6. Why didn’t some classmates talk to Daniel at first?
A. He was too shy to speak. B. He came from a village and seemed different.
C. He was not friendly to others. D. He did not like playing computer games.
7. What did the writer find out about Daniel one rainy afternoon?
A. He could sing very well. B. He could draw very well.
C. He was good at computer games. D. He knew a lot about the birds.
8. What did the writer do for Daniel?
A. He taught Daniel to use the computer. B. He gave Daniel a new notebook.
C. He helped Daniel with his homework. D. He showed Daniel around the school.
9. What does the writer mean by “people are like different colours in a picture”?
A. Everyone should learn to draw pictures. B. Different people make life more beautiful.
C. We should try to be the same as others. D. A picture needs only one colour.
10. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Different Colours, One Picture B. A New Classmate from the Mountains
C. How to Draw the Whole School D. Three Years with a Notebook
C
In a forest, trees look quiet. But under the ground, something surprising is happening. Scientists have found that trees can “talk” to each other.
Very small living things called fungi join different trees together, just like roads under the ground. Trees send food, water and even “messages” along these roads. When a tree is ill, it can send a message, and other trees will start to protect themselves before the problem arrives.
An old tree is often the most important one in the forest. It may send food to young trees that are growing in a dark place where there is little light. Scientists call such old trees “mother trees”. One mother tree may have hundreds of smaller trees around it.
But forests are in danger. When people cut down a forest, they often leave only a few young trees. These trees lose their “roads”, so they become weaker and grow more slowly.
“Maybe forests are cleverer than we thought,” says Dr. Simard, a scientist who studies trees. “If we want healthy forests, we must keep the old trees and the ground under them.”
So next time you walk in a forest, remember: the quietest place may hide the busiest conversation.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why fungi are important to science. B. How old trees help young trees grow.
C. How trees help and “talk” to each other. D. What people can do to save forests.
12. What does “roads” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The paths people build in the forest. B. The fungi joining the trees together.
C. The messages sent by sick trees. D. The food given by old trees.
13. Why are some old trees called “mother trees”?
A. Because they are the oldest in the forest. B. Because they send messages to others.
C. Because they protect young trees from disease. D. Because they feed young trees around them.
14. Why does Dr. Simard say “we must keep the old trees and the ground under them”?
A. Because the old trees and the ground work together to keep a forest alive.
B. Because old trees are the most important ones in the forest.
C. Because the ground is too hard for people to dig.
D. Because young trees cannot grow in sunlight.
15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To advise readers to keep quiet in a forest.
B. To remind readers that the forest is busier than it looks.
C. To show that scientists now have new tools for studying trees.
D. To suggest that people can learn the language of trees.
D
Many people think that only humans and a few clever animals like dolphins can solve problems. But scientists have found that crows may be just as clever as a seven-year-old child.
Crows live all over the world. They are about half a metre long, with black feathers and strong beaks. What makes them special is not their size but their brains.
In one test, scientists put some food at the bottom of a tall glass filled with water. The food was too far down for the birds to reach. The crows looked at it for a moment, and then dropped small stones into the water, one after another. Slowly the water rose, and the food came up. Dinner was ready!
Crows can use tools, too. Some of them break off a small stick, bend one end of it, and use it to pull insects out of a hole. Others drop nuts onto the road so that cars can break them open. They even wait for the traffic light to turn red before they fly down to pick up the food.
A crow never forgets a face, either. If a person once catches a crow, the bird may remember that face for years — and it will tell its family and friends about it.
So the next time you see a crow, look again. The small black bird on the wall may be one of the cleverest animals on the planet.
16. What do scientists think about crows?
A. They are as clever as a seven-year-old child. B. They are the largest birds in the world.
C. They can only live near people. D. They are afraid of cars on the road.
17. How did the crows get the food out of the glass?
A. They broke the glass with their strong beaks. B. They dropped stones into the water to make it rise.
C. They waited for the scientists to help them. D. They shook the glass until the food came up.
18. What do some crows do with nuts?
A. They hide them under the ground for winter.
B. They give them to other birds as gifts.
C. They put them on the road and let cars break them open.
D. They use them to catch insects in the trees.
19. Why does the writer mention the traffic light?
A. To show that crows can read traffic signs.
B. To show that crows are clever enough to wait safely.
C. To explain why the roads are dangerous to birds.
D. To tell readers what colours crows can see.
20. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to catch a crow in a city. B. Why crows are afraid of people.
C. How clever crows are. D. Where crows build their nests.

Our school is not big, but it has a special corner. Behind the classroom building there is a small garden. Students grow tomatoes and other vegetables there.
We started the garden in April. Our science teacher, Mr. Li, helped us turn over the hard ground and taught us how to plant. Two students take turns to water the plants after school every day.
The work was not easy. Some young plants died because we watered them too much, and insects ate the leaves. We asked Mr. Li for help, and he told us to pick them off with our hands.
In July, the most exciting moment came. We picked our first tomatoes. They were small but very sweet. We washed them and shared them with our teachers.
The garden taught us more than science. We learned to be patient and to work with others. Now it is the busiest and happiest place in our school.
