① When it comes to house fires, many people believe that cooking is the biggest cause. However, in fact, electrical malfunctions (故障) have topped the list in China. Electricity runs through every room in our houses, so there are many ways an electrical fire could start. Follow these safety tips to protect your house from electrical fires.
② The best way to avoid electrical fires is to have your house’s wires (电线) checked regularly (定期). Usually, this should be done every 3 to 5 years. But don’t wait if you notice signs like lights that flicker (闪烁) or make strange noises, or outlets that feel warmer than usual to touch. If you see any of these problems, call an electrician (电工) right away for a safety check.
③ If your house is old and has trouble running your appliances (家电), it might be time to upgrade (升级) the electrical system. Calling an electrician to change the main electrical box or wires in the house can cost some money, but it will save more money and energy over time—and, more importantly, keep your family safe.
④ Make sure GFCI and AFCI outlets work well. GFCI outlets are usually put in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens. They keep you safe by turning off the power (电力供应) if something like water gets into a hairdryer or the dryer has an electrical problem. AFCI outlets help avoid fires by cutting off power if they find dangerous signs or wiring problems inside walls. If these outlets stop working, you could be at risk of a fire.
⑤ Keep a fire extinguisher (灭火器) nearby. Water should never be used in an electrical fire, as this could make the situation worse. Instead, use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. If possible, turn off the appliance causing the electrical fire to stop the fire from growing.
11. What is the main cause of house fires in China now?
A. Cooking. B. Electrical problems. C. Old houses. D. Smoking.
12. When should you call an electrician immediately?
A. Every 3 to 5 years. B. When you want to upgrade your house.
C. When unusual signs appear. D. Before you go on a long trip.
13. Which picture shows a hairdryer?

A. They check smoke and turn off power.
B. They slow down electricity to avoid overheating.
C. They turn off appliances to stop fires from growing.
D. They cut off power in time during electrical malfunctions.
15. How is the passage organized?

It was 1912 in Brooklyn, New York. Francie and her younger brother Nelly spent Saturdays collecting old paper, metal, rubber, and other junk (废品). They sold it for money. They gave half to their parents and kept the rest. Their home was a small flat on the third floor. Outside, there was a big ailanthus (臭椿) tree. It was the only tree that could grow out of cement (水泥). Francie thought it was a tree that liked poor people.
At two o’clock, Francie walked to the library. The library was small and old. Francie believed that all the books in the world were there. She decided to read every book, one each day, in alphabetical (按字母表顺序的) order. She even read the boring ones. She had been doing this for a long time, but she was still in the B’s.
On the librarian’s desk, there was a neat (整齐的) row of pencils and some returned books. Francie looked at them and dreamed, “When I have my own home, I will have a desk like this. There will be pencils for writing and books everywhere.”
Saturdays were special. On that day, she did not follow the alphabetical order. She asked the librarian to recommend (推荐) a book.
“Can you recommend a good book for a girl?” she asked.
“How old?” The librarian didn’t even look up.
“Eleven.”
The librarian never knew that the girl took a book out every day and two on Saturday.
Francie hurried home, holding her books close. She loved the story of Francois Villon. Each time she read it, it was more wonderful. She worried that the library might lose the book. She had once started copying it in a cheap notebook. “When I grow up,” she thought, “I will work hard and save money. Then I will buy every book I like.”
Now it was her weekly fire-escape (安全梯)-sitting time. She put a glass, candy and the book on the window sill and climbed out on the fire-escape. Once out there, she felt like she was living in a tree.
Francie breathed the warm air, watching the leaves dance in the sunlight. She ate her candy and drank the cool water between reading.
The afternoon passed quietly.
21. What did Francie and her brother do with the money they got from selling junk?
A. They gave all of it to their parents. B. They spent all of it.

① A Chinese candy wrapper (包装纸) has become a surprise hit on Western social media. White Rabbit, a milk candy first sold in China in 1959, has kept its original (最初的) wrapper for over 60 years. The simple design — a white rabbit sitting against a red background with blue-and-white patterns (花纹) — recently won millions of views online.
② A post said the wrapper was a very good design. The post got about 6 million views, and 260,000 likes. Then many people started sharing their own creations: T-shirts, phone cases, and pictures with the white rabbit.
③ Why is such an old design so popular now? One expert gives several reasons.
④ Zhang Di from Renmin University says the wrapper uses bright colors, simple shapes, and an animal. These elements (要素) are easy for people from any culture to understand. You don’t need to know Chinese history to enjoy the design. He also points out that social media algorithms (算法) have pushed posts from Chinese users to more people from different cultures, helping the candy attract new fans.
⑤ What’s more, young people abroad (国外) are becoming more interested in Chinese culture — from drinking hot water to wearing casual sandals (休闲凉鞋). The White Rabbit wrapper, with its unchanged Chinese style, is just right for this new trend (趋势).
⑥ Many experts agree that keeping the special design has helped the brand (品牌). They believe that traditional brands should stay true to themselves. However, Zhang adds that being famous online does not mean lasting success. The candy must still taste great and truly satisfy (满足) its customers. He advises brands to make efforts (努力) to learn about new markets and improve their products.
43. How long has White Rabbit kept its original wrapper?

根据后文“such activities usually require more time and energy than many of us feel we have”可知,需要更多时间和精力是人们面临的一个困难或“问题”,problem意为“问题”符合语境。
根据后文“In this 7-day program”可知,“Big Joy Project”是一个“项目”,program意为“项目”符合语境。

AFCI outlets help avoid fires by cutting off power if they find dangerous signs or wiring problems inside walls. If these outlets stop working, you could be at risk of a fire.
⑤ Keep a fire extinguisher (灭火器) nearby. Water should never be used in an electrical fire, as this could make the situation worse. Instead, use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. If possible, turn off the appliance causing the electrical fire to stop the fire from growing.

Do you find it difficult to fall asleep at night? ___26___ Research has found that people who read before bed usually sleep better — and longer — than those who don’t.
In a study, almost 500 participants (参与者) were asked to read a book in bed for 15 to 30 minutes before trying to sleep. ___27___ Both groups were also asked not to eat or drink anything with caffeine (咖啡因) in the hour before they went to bed. After one week, 42% of the readers said they slept better!
___28___ When you read in bed, your heart slows down a little, while your muscles (肌肉) relax. At the same time, a good book can calm your mind, stopping the day’s stress from keeping you awake.
___29___ This is important, because the light from screens can negatively affect sleep. Of course, this means that reading an e-book on a screen probably won’t have the same positive effect on sleep. Even devices (设备) made just for reading still have blue light. ___30___
Therefore (因此), for the best sleep, try reading — and choose physical books!
A. It helps you sleep.
B. Try picking up a book!
C. The blue light is known to make it harder to fall asleep.
D. Another group of participants was told not to read in bed.
E. One of the reasons why reading a book could improve sleep is that it’s relaxing.

B“Try picking up a book!”
D“Another group of participants was told not to read in bed.”
E“One of the reasons why reading a book could improve sleep is that it’s relaxing.”
F“For many people, reading a book also means they won’t be looking at phones or computers.”
C“The blue light is known to make it harder to fall asleep.”

XT-27 was a model robot, and he felt very proud. A small plate on his body read, “XT-27: the best robot.” He thought he was better than other robots and only greeted robots like himself.
One day when he was walking in the city, a big yellow door suddenly appeared in front of him. He opened the door and walked into a strange city. Every robot here was an XT-27. He was excited and began to explore the place. Sometimes he stopped to talk to the other robots, telling them how great it was to be an XT-27. Finally, he lived there.
As days went by, he slowly became unhappy. All the robots had the same skills and did everything in the same way. He could no longer feel special and had no friends. He began to miss the robots from his old world. They had different strengths and weak points, but staying with them was fun.
