Oh,what happened to your face? Why is your face covered in horrible
spots?
Man:

you need the deer, but this deer is not ordinary. If you want to catch it,you

I saved one of your people.May I ask-who told you where I am?
King:
It's him over there.
Deer:
Oh!That is the man that I risked my life to save!He almost drowned in
the river. It is I that carried him to the riverbank.I asked him to promise
that he would not tell anyone about me,but now,he has failed to keep
his promise.

I'm terribly sorry. This man didn't keep his promise and did a terrible
thing to you who saved his life. And all I thought about was what my wife
wanted.I am so ashamed of myself. Will you please forgive me?
Deer:
You are a fine king.If you can just promise me one thing,I will forgive you.
King:
I will keep my word. Please tell me what it is.
Deer:
I hope your people can live with me in harmony from now on,instead of
hunting me all the time.

It's so kind of you. It's time for me to leave.May you and your people live
a good life.Goodbye![Leaves the stage.]
King:

The Necklace
(Adapted from Guy de Maupassant's The Necklace)
ACT1
Scene 1
[In a flat.Mathilde sits at the table and drinks soup. The maid,Agnes, stands by.]
Mathilde:
Agnes, can you get the cheese for me?I need it for the soup.
Agnes:
Of course,madame.
[Agnes goes to the cupboard and opens it.]
Agnes:
Sorry,madame.The food cupboard is empty.
Mathilde:
[Sighs.Fine.I'll just drink this tasteless soup without cheese. But what
kind of French household doesn't have cheese?
Agnes:
I'm sorry, madame. The money for groceries this week has run out.
Mathilde:
Oh,no!And look at these cheap spoons and bowls.A woman like me
should have real silver plates and fine china. My life is so pitiful!
Agnes:
Oh madame, don't say that!At least you have this cosy flat and enough
food.
Mathilde:
You don't understand. This is far from the life I want.
Scene 2

Loisel:
Hello,darling!What's for dinner?
Mathilde:
It's the usual...French onion soup.

Mathilde:
It's supposed to have cheese on it,but we don't have any.
Loisel:
It's fine!It tastes good enough even without cheese.
Mathilde:
Oh,I'm so tired of this kind of poor life.
Loisel:
I'm sorry,Mathilde.I'm working as hard as I can as a clerk.We even
have Agnes to help with the housework.I'm very happy with our life.

But I want to have fine
things like Jeanne,my
best friend.She went to
the same school as me.
I want to live in a nice
house.For once,I'd like
to go to a fancy ball and
dance the night away like Jeanne does all the time!
Loisel:
Oh,don't be sad, darling!I actually have some good news for you.
Today,my boss,Mr Romponneau, gave me an invitation to the ball at
the palace of the Ministry. All the important people will be there.Look!
[Takes out an envelope from his briefcase and hands it to Mathilde.]
Mathilde:
You must be kidding! That's the ball I read about in the newspaper. But
I can't go.I have nothing to wear to a ball like that!
Loisel:
What about that lovely gown you go to the theatre in?
Mathilde:
It's too plain for a fancy ball at the palace!I'd be so embarrassed
Loisel:
You know...I've been saving up money for a hunting trip with my boss
and co-workers.It's 400 francs. If it means so much to you,I'll give you
the money to buy a beautiful gown for the ball.
Mathilde:
But...I'll need jewellery too,and I don't have any.[Buries her face in
her hands and cries.]
Loisel:
Don't cry, darling. How about you ask your friend Jeanne to lend you
some jewellery? You two are such good friends.
Mathilde:
That's a good idea!Oh,thank you so much.You're such a wonderful
husband.[Pretends to ball dance around the room.]I'm going to the
ball at the palace!

Mathilde:
You know,you're my best friend.
Jeanne:
Yes,we've known each other forever.
Mathilde:
You see,Loisel and I got an invitation to the ball at the palace of the
Ministry next week-the one held in honour of the foreign prince, with
all the important people.
Jeanne:
That's amazing!Everyone's talking about it.You're so lucky to have
been invited.
Mathilde:
I'm so excited!I've even bought a new dress for it ..but I don't have
any jewellery to match it.I was wondering if I could borrow a necklace
from you.
Jeanne:
Of course!I have so many that I can hardly wear them all.[Leaves the
room and comes back with a large jewellery case.]Help yourself to the
one you like.
Mathilde:
How generous you are![Opens the case and examines the jewellery one
by one, gasping and smiling in amazement.]They're all so beautiful.
How about this one?But it looks expensive.
Jeanne:
Don't worry,Mathilde.Take any one you like.
Mathilde:
Oh darling, thank you!Thank you so much!
Jeanne:
I bet you'll be the prettiest lady at the ball.

gorgeous!
Minister:
Do you recognize her?
Lady:
No,I have never seen her at any ball. She must be a newcomer here,
with a rich husband.
Minister:
Let me invite her to the next dance. Then we'll know more.
[Mathilde dances with different people in turn.Loisel slowly falls asleep on a chair at
the side of the room. After dancing for the whole night,Mathilde walks over to Loisel
and wakes him up.]

Mathilde:
I'm so tired!I didn't realize that it would be so difficult to find a cab at
4a.m.
Loisel:
Thank goodness. We were able to find one down by the river.
Mathilde:
But only after a 45-minute walk.
[Loisel takes off his coat and throws it on a chair.Mathilde begins to take off her coat
and then cries in horror.]
Loisel:
What's wrong,my dear?

Mathilde:
It's not there! It's not anywhere!Oh,what are we to do?
Loisel:
[Face brightens.I'll go out and look for it.It probably dropped on
the street or somewhere.Or we could call the cab company.Maybe
someone found it.
Mathilde:
No one is going to return a valuable necklace like that! No,it's gone!
Gone forever! What am I going to tell Jeanne?[Cries.]
Loisel:
We can buy a replacement! She'll never know!Let's go and check all

Mathilde:
Oh,look at this.It looks exactly the same as Jeanne's.We're so lucky!
Mister,how much is this necklace?
Shopkeeper:Madame,you have good taste.This necklace is 40,000 francs.It's the
most expensive and beautiful one in our shop.It matches your beauty
perfectly!
Loisel:
40,000 francs!My goodness!You must be kidding me!
Shopkeeper:Sir,look at all those diamonds. You will not regret spending this money
when you see them shining on your beautiful wife's neck.
Loisel:
But I can't afford that.
Shopkeeper:I can give you a discount. If you take it today, you will only have to pay
36,000 francs.
Mathilde:
We really need this necklace, but we don't have that much money. Is
there any other way,Mister?
Shopkeeper:Well,since you want the
necklace so much,I suggest
you take a loan.You can
pay a small sum of money
every month until it's all
paid up.
Loisel:
[Looks pale.]I think that's the only way we can solve our problem now.
ACT3
Scene 1
[In Loisel and Mathilde's new flat.It is much smaller and shabbier.Loisel comes back
in looking tired and stressed.]
Loisel:
Hi dear,I'm so hungry.I went to the trade company after work and did
the accounting there for three hours without dinner.
Mathilde:
I'm so sorry to hear that. Here's some soup.I made it with the last of
our potatoes.
*Drama 107
Loisel:
After the day I've had, even potato soup is a feast for me.How was
your day?
Mathilde:
It was just as terrible as every day has been.I washed all the dishes
and clothes with cold water and my bare hands.I climbed up and down
the four floors with buckets of water.I had the usual quarrel with Mrs
Butcher because she wouldn't sell me cheese on credit.
Loisel:
Well, look on the bright side!Next week, the loan for the necklace will
finally be paid off,and we'll be free. We'll have our lives back again!
Mathilde:
But I'm no longer the beautiful young woman I once was. With all this
hard work,I've aged 30 years!
Loisel:
No,my dear. You're just too tired.Drink some hot soup and get some
rest.Tomorrow will be another day
Mathilde:
Thank you,my darling, but I can't.I have to go and do the laundry for
that rich family up the hill.I'll be back late tonight.
Loisel:
I have got two more cases of work.I didn't finish them last Sunday,so I
can't walk with you there.Sorry.
Mathilde:
It doesn't matter.Give me your thick coat. It's getting cold outside.
[Mathilde finishes her soup and leaves.]
Scene 2
[One Sunday morning,Mathilde is walking slowly down a street.Jeanne walks towards
her but does not recognize her.]
Mathilde:
Hello,Jeanne.
Jeanne:
Oh,madame.Do I know you?You must have the wrong person.
Mathilde:
It's me,Mathilde.
Jeanne:
Mathilde? Is that you?[Stares closely. It really is you!How long has it
been since we met last time?
Mathilde:
Ten years.
Jeanne:
Ten years? But look at you!Your hair is totally grey, and your hands are
so rough. You must have been through a lot. What happened?
Mathilde:
It's all because of your necklace.

Jeanne:
My necklace?I don't understand.
Mathilde:
Remember that necklace I borrowed from you for the ball?
Jeanne:
Yes…
Mathilde:
Well,I spent a wonderful night with it.It turned out to be the happiest
time in my life,but...I lost it!
Jeanne:
That's not possible. You returned it a few days later. That was the last
time we met,I think.I just saw it in my jewellery case the other day and
thought about you.
Mathilde:
No ..No...That's a replacement.We took a loan of 40,000 francs and
bought another necklace,so I could return it to you.
Jeanne:
You bought a real diamond necklace?
Mathilde:
Yes.And in order to pay off the loan for that necklace,we had to move
to a small flat and couldn't have Agnes anymore.
Jeanne:
Oh,my poor girl.
Mathilde:
I've been doing housework for rich people for the past 10 years to earn
extra money.Loisel has taken on two extra jobs and has been working
all day,every day.
Jeanne:
Oh,Mathilde.I'm really sorry to hear that.
Mathilde:
But all the misery
ends now.The
loan was paid off
yesterday,so I can
have my time to
myself and enjoy
the sunshine in the
street.
Jeanne:
Mathilde, you should have told me earlier, and I could have saved you
from all your misery.
Mathilde:
What do you mean?
Jeanne:
The necklace you lost was not a real diamond necklace. It was a fake.It
couldn't have been worth more than 500 francs!
