Step 1 Lead in 导入（4 mins）

1. Greet the class and play a one-minute video of the Spring Festival.

2. Ask: What festivals do you know in China? When are they? Why do people celebrate them?

3. Show the BIG Question of the unit: Why do people celebrate festivals?

Step 2 Warming up 1a 节日与日期（8 mins）

1. Students look at the four pictures in 1a and write down this year's dates for each

festival.

2. Pair work: A: When is the Lantern Festival? B: It's on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.

3. Invite three pairs to report and check the dates on the calendar.

4. Brainstorm: What do people eat and do on these days?

Step 3 Listening 1b 听音判断（10 mins）

1. Pre-listening: look at the picture in 1b and predict what Victor and Yaqi are talking about.

2. Play the first conversation twice and students circle T for true or F for false.

3. Check the answers and ask students to correct the false statements.

4. Listen for the third time and repeat the sentences with yuanxiao.

Step 4 Listening 1c 听音填表（12 mins）

1. Read the nine options in the box together and guess the meaning of each phrase.

2. Play the second conversation and students complete the table about time, activity and purpose.

3. Check the answers in pairs, then with the whole class.

4. Ask: What do the Tomb-sweeping Day and the Day of the Dead have in common?

Step 5 Speaking 1d 同伴交流（8 mins）

1. Students choose the festival they know best from 1b or 1c.

2. Work in pairs and talk about other customs of the festival, such as food, clothes and presents.

3. Invite two pairs to share their ideas with the class.

4. Encourage students to add one more custom they know.

Step 6 Summary 小结（5 mins）

1. Summarize the new words: lantern, eve, tomb, parade, ancestor, costume.

2. Summarize the patterns for asking about a festival: When is it? What do people do? Why do people celebrate it?

3. Re-read the BIG Question and let students give a one-sentence answer.

Step 7 Homework 布置作业（3 mins）

1. Copy and recite the new words in 1a-1c.

2. Write five sentences about your favourite festival.

3. Search for information about Qu Yuan for the next lesson.
