Making a Mosquito Trap (捕蚊器)
Are you being troubled by the itch (瘙痒) brought by mosquitoes? People commonly use chemicals to control mosquitoes, which is bad for the environment. So why not try making a DIY mosquito trap with yeast (酵母) and sugar? It is simpler, cheaper and more eco-friendly.
Materials
*Empty plastic bottle *White sugar *Yeast
*Water * Black cloth
Steps
Step 1 Cut off the top of an empty plastic bottle right below the neck.
Step 2 Mix sugar and yeast in warm water at the bottom of the bottle. If it’s a 2-liter bottle, mix a cup of warm water, 4 tablespoons of sugar, and 1/3 teaspoon of yeast.
Step 3 Turn the top of the bottle downward to create a funnel (漏斗) shape. Use tape or glue to hold the funnel in place.
?
Step 4 Wrap (包住) the bottle with the prepared black cloth. Refill the trap with fresh yeast and sugar every few days.
How it works
The mix produces carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. The funnel shape makes it easy for mosquitoes to enter the bottle but hard for them to escape.
26. Which of the following are needed to make the mosquito trap?
①Black cloth ②White sugar ③A funnel ④Yeast ⑤Water
A. ①②③④ B. ①②③⑤ C. ①②④⑤ D. ②③④⑤
27. For a 2-liter plastic bottle, how much sugar should be used in the mix?
A. 4 tablespoons. B. 1 cup. C. 1/3 teaspoon. D. 2 liters.
28. Which of the following pictures can match Step 3?
A. B. C. D.
29. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The trap uses chemicals to kill mosquitoes.
B. Mosquitoes can easily escape from the trap.
C. The trap needs to be refilled every few days.
D. Sugar and yeast should be mixed in hot water.
30. In which section of a newspaper can we read this passage?
A. Art Corner. B. Animal World. C. Cooking Fun. D. Everyday Wisdom.
B
In 1946, a young engineer named Percy Spencer was working on radar technology. One day, while standing near a radar device (雷达设备), he noticed something unusual — the chocolate in his pocket melted. Most people would have simply cleaned up the mess and moved on. But Spencer had a different thought: “What if this energy could be used to cook food?”
This simple question led to the invention of the microwave oven (微波炉). Spencer experimented with different foods. The first thing he cooked was popcorn, and then he tried an egg — which exploded (爆炸) in his face! After many tests, he created a metal box that used radar waves to heat food quickly and safely.
At first, microwave ovens were huge and expensive. They were only used in restaurants and ships. But as technology improved, they became smaller and more affordable. Today, more than 90% of American households have a microwave oven.
Spencer’s story shows us that great ideas can come from everyday observations. He didn’t set out to invent a kitchen appliance — he just paid attention to what was happening around him and asked the right questions. The power of ideas lies not in how complicated (复杂的) they are, but in how we develop and apply them to solve problems.
31. What made Percy Spencer think about cooking food with radar energy?
A. He was hungry and wanted to cook dinner.
B. He noticed his chocolate melted near a radar device.
C. He was asked to create a new kitchen appliance.
D. He read about it in a science magazine.
32. What happened when Spencer first tried to cook an egg?
A. It exploded. B. It cooked perfectly.
C. It didn’t heat at all. D. It became popcorn.
33. What does the underlined word “observations” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. things seen B. tests C. experiments D. mistakes
34. According to the text, what makes an idea powerful?
A. It must be very complicated.
B. It only comes from great scientists.
C. It needs expensive equipment.
D. It is developed and used to solve problems.
35. What can we learn from Spencer’s story?
A. Inventions always happen by accident.
B. Only engineers can make important inventions.
C. Paying attention to daily life can lead to great ideas.
D. Microwave oven became popular immediately after it was invented.
C
Before movable type, a whole page was often carved (刻) onto one wooden block. The method could produce many copies, but carving a new block for every page took time and materials. Movable type changed the process by using separate pieces for characters. The pieces could be arranged, printed, cleaned and used again on another page.
This idea sounds simple today, yet turning it into a dependable method needed several kinds of knowledge. Each piece had to be the same height so every character touched the paper. Ink had to be thick enough to stay clear without sticking the pieces together. The frame (框架) had to hold hundreds or thousands of small pieces without allowing them to move. Printers also needed an organized way to sort the pieces and find a character quickly; or the time saved in carving would be lost in searching.
Movable type did not take the place of woodblock printing right away. One carved block could still be convenient for a short text printed many times, while the number and shape of characters also affected (影响) the choice. So the same invention could spread differently from place to place.
Modern printing looks very different, but the idea of reusable parts continues. A digital font stores the shape of each letter or character separately. When a page is designed, software arranges (排列) those shapes again and again. Three-dimensional (三维) printers use another kind of repeated unit: they follow digital instructions and add material layer by layer until an object is formed.
The history of printing therefore shows that an invention can be more than one machine. It can be a system that organizes materials, skills and information. Movable type did not remove every difficulty, but it made repeated printing more flexible and helped written ideas travel farther.
36. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A printing frame. B. A wooden block.
C. The printed paper. D. The movable-type idea.
37. Why was a sorting system important for movable type?
A. It kept the paper dry.
B. It reduced the number of pages.
C. It made every character larger.
D. It prevented time from being wasted in searching.
38. What does Paragraph 3 mainly explain?
A. Why short texts were never printed.
B. Why the same invention may spread differently.
C. Why movable type had no value over time.
D. Why wood was the only useful material.
39. How is a digital font similar to movable type?
A. Both require a wooden frame.
B. Both use the same kind of ink.
C. Both store reusable character forms.
D. Both print without instructions.
40. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Digital fonts are more important than books.
B. Movable type completely ended block printing.
C. Ancient and modern printers use the same machines.
D. Printing developed through reusable parts and organized work.

One report by Ember, a global energy group, says the world’s solar and wind farms produced more electricity than coal power plants for the first time. The world produced nearly one-third more solar power in the first half of 2025 than in the same period last year. The growing solar power met 83% of the increase in world’s electricity demand (需求). Besides, wind power grew by over 7%. Together, they filled nearly all of the global growth in electricity demand.
“This milestone is an important turning point,” says Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, the writer of the report. “Solar and wind power are now growing fast enough to meet the world’s growing needs for electricity,” she said. “This marks clean power is developing at the same speed as the growing electricity demand.”
According to Ember’s report, China added more renewable energy than the rest of the world together. And another report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows China has been the world’s biggest growing market for renewables. The following explains the success:
● In 2023, China spent about $700 billion on clean energy—almost the same amount as that of all other countries together.
● In 2024, China added 356.61 gigawatts (GW) of new wind and solar power capacity (容量), which is more than Germany’s total power capacity of 352 GW.
● In 2024, China’s coal use increased by 1.7% compared with 2023, while its share of total energy use fell by 1.6%.
● China makes 80% of the world’s solar panels (板) and is the No.1 seller of wind turbines and batteries, helping many countries change to cleaner energy too.
However, in the U. S. , electricity demand grew faster than renewables growth, leading to a 17% rise in coal power in the first half of 2025. And in the E.U., slow growth in electricity demand met an unexpected problem: a weather-related drop in wind and hydropower (水力发电) caused more use of gas and coal, even though solar power was developing rapidly.
41. What does the underlined word “This milestone” refer to?
A. Solar and wind power have replaced the use of gas and coal.
B. 83% of the world electricity was from wind power in 2025.
C. Rising wind and solar power nearly met global electricity growth.
D. The world’s coal power plants are developing at a rapid speed in 2025.
42. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Growing renewables demand in China.
B. China’s contribution to global clean energy.
C. Growing numbers of renewable farms in China.
D. China’s latest research on solar panels and batteries.
43. Which picture shows coal use and its share of total energy use in China (2023-2024)?
A. B.
C. D.
44. How did the U. S. deal with its growing energy demand in the first half of 2025?
A. By producing more solar power.
B. By increasing the use of coal power.
C. By raising the output of wind and hydropower.
D. By controlling the growth speed of energy demand.
45. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Global Renewables: Wind Stands Out
B. Global Energy: Renewables Share Rises
C. World Energy Increase: Gas & Coal Go Up
D. World Electricity Demand: Solar Panels Lead

【答案】31. B 32. A 33. A 34. D 35. C
