Motivating Your Adolescent to Perform
Teenagers may lack the motivation a parent wants — to try harder, to achieve better, to care about doing well, to be more ambitious — but they definitely have the motivation to do what they want (like pleasure) and to avoid what they don’t (like work). So the key lies in how parents can motivate their kids properly.
To apply extrinsic (外来的) motivation, parents usually start by believing in the power of persuasion — explaining, urging, and even pleading. Persuasion, aimed at appealing to adolescents to understand parents, sometimes works, and sometimes doesn’t. If the adolescent is unwilling to listen, this approach can be more annoying than encouraging since it makes them feel that their parents are always unsatisfied with them.
Additionally, parents might try to increase extrinsic motivation by offering rewards for improved performance or using punishment if behavior doesn’t change. The risk here is that both rewards and punishment can be counterproductive. Rewards can be negative when seen as threats — meaning they won’t get the prize if they don’t improve. And punishment, such as criticism or anger, can make them upset and lead to even more rebellion.
Actually, the best way to motivate adolescents is to trigger their intrinsic (内在的) motivation. That is, parents should make their kids willing to take charge of what matters to them and make decisions on their own. Parents cannot reward or punish an adolescent into becoming intrinsically motivated, but sometimes they can encourage self-motivation by creating a circumstance that stimulates self-interest. For example, after battling with teenagers over homework delay, parents had better take their kids to visit a university they like. There, with parents getting out of the way, their kids can talk directly to the university teachers to find out what grades they need to get in.

Art Gallery Visits
The lasting rainy winter is a season that feels heavy with depression. Luckily, I have a way to escape from the winter blues — visiting art galleries. Engaging with art closely, particularly in winter, is a life enhancer and a relief from loneliness, sadness, and frustration.
When viewing things we find beautiful, activity in the pleasure and reward centres of the brain goes up. So when I don't have the time, or energy to take on challenging new themes in the gallery, I return to the comfort of my favourites: the blue in David Hockney's swimming pool, Agnes Martin's faint, delicate lines, or John Constable's cloudy Brighton summers. The comforting properties of these artworks are best experienced during winter.
And did you know that even on the busiest of days, in the busiest galleries, there is potential for mindfulness? Mindfulness is hard to catch for me — my head feels like a mix of shopping lists, decade-old angers, and random song bits I can't name, but time spent in a gallery is the closest I get to being truly present. Part of this is down to "slow looking”, the practice of taking time to really absorb an artwork rather than giving it a glance, reading the accompanying description, having another quick look and moving on. The experience can be powerful and informative.
Often, I visit galleries alone to gather my thoughts. I just want the company of form, colour, material. But sometimes I'll take my daughter. To me, joy was walking her and watching as her eyes widened in curiosity, tiny fingers pointing: "Do you see what I see?” Telling her: "Yes ... but also no.” That we all see these things in a different way is such an important lesson that reaches into every part of our lives. Remembering that perception is personal is precious for me. This knowledge keeps me in a good state.

Ice Cream Innovation
Is there anything nicer than a cooling ice cream on a hot summer’s day? This traditional treat is centuries old, but our tastes and consumer habits are evolving. How is the ice cream production process changing, and who is driving this change?
Making ice cream is a time-consuming process. While the recipe is simple, getting the balance right between ice, fat and air is important if the ice cream is to have the right texture. To achieve this, the ingredients need to be mixed and heated, then cooled and frozen-a process that takes time and uses a lot of energy. Designers and engineers are working to improve the production process with new specialized equipment to make it increasingly automated. For now, however, even with the help of robots and 3D printers, it can take up to two years from testing a new frozen dessert product to it being available to consumers.
And demand is only going up. According to statistics, more than 25 billion litres of ice cream were eaten worldwide in 2021. While the US and China are the biggest consumers, data shows that people in the UK bought 28%more ice cream during the UK’s record-breaking summer compared to a year earlier. Clearly, rising temperatures can explain why some people are buying more ice cream, but it’s not the only explanation. The pandemic has seen people reaching for pleasures they can enjoy at home, which include eating indulgent(纵容的) foods.
So, what new things can we expect? Dairy still dominates, but plant-based ice cream and low-calorie choices are a growing part of the frozen dessert market. But, according to Elsebeth Baungaard, the next global trend will be less about innovation and more about portion size “I’m sorry to say it’s simply shrinking”, she says. “But the quality will be higher.”

Dear School Leaders,
I am writing to recommend an activity for our upcoming annual Science and Technology Festival. Among the three options, I strongly suggest the “Visit to Shanghai High-Tech Park”.
My recommendation is based on the following reasons. First, compared with traditional classroom learning, visiting a high-tech park offers us a precious opportunity to step out of the ivory tower and experience cutting-edge technologies firsthand. We can witness how scientific theories are applied in real-world industries. Second, this activity will undoubtedly broaden our horizons and spark our passion for science and innovation. By communicating with engineers and researchers there, students may get inspired to pursue careers in STEM fields.
I firmly believe that this trip will make our festival more rewarding. I hope you will take my suggestion into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】
In the digital era, technology has injected new vitality into cultural inheritance, bringing unprecedented opportunities. Digital platforms break the limitations of time and space, allowing precious cultural relics, ancient art forms and traditional customs to be presented to the public in vivid ways such as 3D modeling and virtual exhibitions. This not only makes cultural heritage more accessible but also enhances people’s awareness of protection.
As teenagers, we are the inheritors and innovators of culture and can contribute our own strength in the digital age. For one thing, we can create short videos to introduce traditional crafts like paper-cutting and embroidery, sharing their production processes and cultural connotations on social media to attract more young people’s attention. For another, we can participate in online projects of sorting out and translating ancient poems and essays, using our knowledge to help these literary treasures cross time and space and shine again.
Digital technology is a powerful bridge connecting the past and the future. Let’s take advantage of this tool to let cultural heritage pass on from generation to generation and glow with lasting vitality in the digital age.
