In 2010, Justin Horner was driving down a busy freeway in Portland, Oregon, when his tire blew out. He pulled over to the side of the road and made a sign that said he needed help.
Three hours later, a van finally pulled up. Out came a family of four. They were Latino, and their younger daughter acted as translator between her parents’ Spanish and Horner’s English, so that they could work together to fix Horner’s car.
They took about an hour, starting with the father finding a log on the side of the road, and using it to lift the car. When they finished, the mom pulled out a big jug of water, and they drank and washed their hands.
“I just thanked them and I tried to give her money,” Horner recalled. “I only had a $20 bill, and I just thought, you know, it was the least I could do. And she just wouldn’t take it.” But Horner was adamant (坚决的), and eventually he put the money in her hand, and walked away.
Then he heard their younger daughter call out, to ask Horner if he was hungry. Indeed he was, and she came over with a pancake from their cooler. They exchanged thanks, she got into the van, and the family started to drive away.
“As they were trying to get into traffic, I unwrapped the pancake and my money was in the pancake,” Horner said. Horner immediately ran over to the van to get the father’s attention.
“He rolled down his window. He saw me coming and he was just shaking his head. And I kept saying like, ‘Por favor, por favor’ — I was holding a bill out,” Horner remembered. “And with a big smile on his face, he just said, ‘Today you, tomorrow me.’”
The man then gave Horner a wave, rolled up the window, and drove off. The last thing Horner saw was the young girl waving goodbye through the window and he never saw them again.
24. What happened to Horner on his way in Portland?
A. He got lost. B. His food ran out.
C. His car broke down. D. He was stuck in traffic.
25. Why did the younger daughter give Horner a pancake?
A. To express her thanks. B. To show her kindness.
C. To win Horner’s recognition. D. To give back Horner’s money.

A. Everyone should be kind. B. Everyone can be in trouble.
C. Everyone should learn to fix a car. D. Everyone should be grateful to others.
27. Which of the following can best describe the father’s behavior?
A. Change danger into safety. B. Offer fuel in snowy weather.
C. Act bravely for a just cause. D. Risk one’s life to save others.

The town of Bacoli outside Naples, Italy, was trying to build a children’s playground, but the kids will have to make do with their backyards because surveys uncovered a Roman villa (别墅) in the same place.
About 2,000 years ago, the villa sat high on a cliffside (悬崖边) and had a full view of the Gulf of Naples, with the islands of Ischia and Procida being easy to see in the distance. In fact, the archaeologists digging up the old house think it could have been where Pliny the Elder often stayed.
An author and naturalist, Pliny the Elder wrote the Naturalis Historia which became a publishing model for the encyclopedia (百科全书) in our time. He was also a naval (海军的) officer of the early Roman Empire. Bacoli sits today where the city of Misenum was located, the place where the Roman navy kept their ships in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Pliny the Elder passed away after breathing in the harmful smoke of Mount Vesuvius’ volcanic eruption, which he saw from his villa across the Gulf. He organized several ships to save people who were stuck in the town of Stabiae. Overweight and sick, he couldn’t escape the smoke clouds after arriving at Stabiae with a team to save the people there.
“It’s likely that the big, beautiful villa had a 360-degree view of the Gulf of Naples for important reasons to do with the army,” said Simona Formula, lead archaeologist at Naples’ art heritage. “We believe that digging deeper might show us more rooms, and even paintings on the walls.”
The archaeologists found that the walls were made of stone blocks and put together in a way that looked like a fisherman’s net.
Nowadays, the parts of the villa that were once higher up the cliff are only a few meters above the sea. The whole area is slowly going down into the sea because of earthquakes and volcanic activity over the years, and the place where boats for servicing the villa had parked is now underwater.
The villa is going to open in a few months as an open-air museum.
28. When was the Roman villa found?
A. When a naturalist visited a cliffside.
B. When archaeologists surveyed Bacoli.
C. When a kid was digging in his backyard.
D. When Bacoli was about to build a playground.
29. Which of the following can best describe Pliny the Elder?
A. Generous and confident.
B. Honest and hard-working.
C. Knowledgeable and brave.
D. Selfless and open-minded.
30. In ancient times, the villa might have been used as a place ________.
A. to hold meetings on wars
B. to watch the Gulf of Naples
C. for naval officers to live
D. for its owner to give parties
31. What can we learn about the villa from paragraph 7?
A. It is too ancient to recover.
B. It is of great cultural value.
C. It is in a dangerous situation.
D. It has its environment polluted.
D
Sometimes, what my seven-year-old tabby cat Ophelia wants is obvious. Crying in front of her empty food bowl at dinner time clearly indicates she’s at risk of starvation. Other times, though, her meows are a complete and total mystery.
That’s where Sergei Dreizin and Mark Boyes, computer scientists at Akvelon, a software engineering company based in Bellevue, Washington, say they can help. They are the brains behind the MeowTalk app, which aims to “give cat owners the best tools available” for interpreting their pet’s needs.
When Boyes and Dreizin were looking for data to inform their new app, they came across 2019 research that revealed cat meows contain certain shared characteristics. The study authors then built a computer program to analyze audio recordings of 21 adult cats meowing.
The MeowTalk founders used these audio recordings of tens of thousands of meows to develop their computer models, which is fueled by artificial intelligence. And it worked. 2021 study found MeowTalk can classify nine feline (猫科的) phrases with 90 percent accuracy.
The free app records your feline’s meows and translates them into a small range of phrases, such as “I’m annoyed.” and “Feed me!” Users can rate the accuracy of MeowTalk’s translations, which further improves the computer model. Launched in November 2020, the app has been downloaded over 20 million times, and Dreizin estimates that the program has analyzed over a billion meows to date. “We’re the largest depositors of meows in this galaxy,” he quips.
The app is part of an expanding suite of technologies designed to help us communicate with our furry friends. Another is FluentPet, which trains your pet to press buttons to communicate a need; for instance, a cat can learn to press a button that says the word “play”.
Cat behaviorist and communication expert Charlotte de Mouzon isn’t convinced of these products’ accuracy, but strengthening your relationship with your cat is always a wise goal. “If people play with the app, maybe they will become more attentive to their cats,” says de Mouzon, of Paris Nanterre University.
32. How can computer scientists at Akvelon help cat owners?
A. By making cats’ needs fulfilled.
B. By getting cats rid of starvation.
C. By filling the empty food bowls.
D. By solving the mysteries of cats’ meows.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A. Users think the app very helpful.
B. Users can help to promote the app.
C. Dreizin thinks the app is the most accurate.
D. The program has analyzed billions of meows.
34. What’s Charlotte’s attitude to this kind of apps?
A. Doubtful. B. Conservative. C. Positive. D. Negative.
35. What is the purpose of the the text?
A. To comment on two apps.
B. To compare two similar apps.
C. To introduce the new technology.
D. To recommend an app to cats’ owners.

Shakespeare once wrote: “Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan (借款) often loses both itself and friend”. It is often used as a warning about the dangers of lending. ____36____
If our friend or family member comes to us for hard cash, it can be very difficult to turn them away. ____37____ And if that money doesn’t come back, it can lead to fights or even legal battles. So how can we, as the lender, avoid these problems? According to Bradley T. Koontz, an expert in psychology (心理学), there are some steps you can take.
Understanding why there is an unavoidable risk of lending anything to a friend is the first thing. And it’s not just the risk of losing the money, but the friendship could also be in danger. ____38____ The lender becomes the one in control, while the borrower may feel uncomfortable with the new situation. Similarly, if you try to advise them on what to do with the money, it might make things difficult between you two. In other words, let go — and see it as their money.
____39____ Saying ‘no’ is hard when a friend comes asking, but if you need that money, refusing is probably the best choice. If you still want to lend, making a formal agreement and writing everything down can help make sure the money is paid back on time. But some friends may not like being asked to sign something — seeing it as a lack of trust.
Finally, for some, it’s best to just see the money as a gift and be pleasantly surprised if something comes back. And if you do want to keep your friendship safe, when you need to borrow some money, what should you do? ____40____
A. You feel under pressure to help.
B. Perhaps a bank is a better option.
C. Lending money is a good way to test a friend.
D. And if you can’t afford to lend something, don’t.
E. The friend might feel unhappy and end the relationship.
F. This is because lending has changed the balance of power.
G. But why can lending money be so harmful to our friendships?

I grew up in a small town and thought I would never settle in the countryside. As a teenager, rural life left me unsettled. Everyone knew everything about me, whereas I preferred the privacy that city life offered. The closeness I now value was then a source of deep annoyance.
It was my mother’s sudden illness during my college years that shifted my opinion. Coming back, I found many neighbors had gathered around to help. Their quiet support awakened a sense of gratitude. Gradually, I thought that the familiarity I once found unbearable was an extension of belonging in fact.
That realization led me to return to my hometown, a choice that has proved to be right. Urban doctors, limited to narrow fields, often refer many of their patients to those even more specialized, leaving few cases for themselves. Here, my single day as a rural doctor might involve delivering a baby (接生孩子) in the morning, treating a child’s broken arm in the afternoon, and responding to a farm accident in the evening.
And there is the lifestyle. I live in a lovely spacious house with breathtaking views and I enjoy a fifteen-minute drive to work. Admittedly (诚然), there are splendid shops and restaurants in the city, but after three days, the excitement fades and a longing for home comes.
Country life may not be for everyone, but it is worth considering. Wherever we live, we each have only one life, and we choose what works best.
One cold winter afternoon, I received an urgent call. An elderly farmer had fallen from his ladder while repairing the roof.
Para1: I took my medical bag and hurried to the farmer’s house right away.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para2: Several days later, the old farmer came to my clinic (诊所) with a basket of fresh vegetables.

Good morning everyone and welcome to Hershey. I’m going to tell you something about the history of the Hershey Company before we find out how chocolate is really made. Let’s start by going back over a hundred years in time. Did you know that chocolate was something that only rich people could afford to buy? So how come we all eat it today? We have Milton S. Hershey, the founder of Hershey, to thank for that. He had a dream and his dream was to make good chocolate that didn’t cost a lot of money. One of Mr. Hershey’s first businesses was the Lancaster Carmel Company. But when he saw some German chocolate machines in Chicago in 1893 he decided to make chocolate himself. In 1900, Mr. Hershey sold the Lancaster Carmel Company for 1 million dollars. He used the money from this sale to build what is now the world’s largest chocolate factory. The completion of the Hershey chocolate factory in 1905 meant the full production of chocolate could begin. Mr. Hershey’s chocolate business developed quickly and so did the area around it. A bank, a department store, a school and even a zoo were built, and in 1906 the village of Derry Church was renamed Hershey after its founder Milton S. Hershey.

26. What did the father mean by saying “Today you, tomorrow me.”?
C 25. D 26. B 27. B
根据第一段中的“In 2010, Justin Horner was driving down a busy freeway in Portland, Oregon, when his tire blew out.(2010年,贾斯汀·霍纳正行驶在俄勒冈州波特兰市一条繁忙的高速公路上,这时他的轮胎爆了。)”
根据第六段中的“As they were trying to get into traffic, I unwrapped the pancake and my money was in the pancake,” Horner said.(“当他们准备驶入车流时,我打开煎饼,发现我的钱就在煎饼里面,”霍纳说。)”
根据第七段中的“And with a big smile on his face, he just said, ‘Today you, tomorrow me.’(他脸上带着灿烂的笑容,只是说道:“今日是你(遇困难),明日就可能是我。”)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Three hours later, a van finally pulled up. Out came a family of four.(三个小时后,一辆面包车终于停了下来。一家四口从车里走了出来。)” 以及第三段“They took about an hour, starting with the father finding a log on the side of the road, and using it to lift the car.(他们花了大约一个小时。先是父亲在路边找到了一根原木,用它把车顶了起来)”第四段中的 “And she just wouldn’t take it.(但她就是不肯收下。)” 可知,Horner 在高速路边被困三小时无人相助,这个拉丁裔家庭主动停车帮他修车,还坚决拒绝报酬,甚至把钱藏在薄饼里还回来,正是在他人最窘迫、最需要帮助时伸出援手,所以最能描述父亲行为的是“雪中送炭”。
C
D 29. C 30. B 31. C

根据第二段“About 2,000 years ago, the villa sat high on a cliffside (悬崖边) and had a full view of the Gulf of Naples, with the islands of Ischia and Procida being easy to see in the distance.(大约2000年前,这座别墅高高地坐落在悬崖边,可以俯瞰那不勒斯湾的全景,远处的伊斯基亚岛和普罗奇达岛清晰可见。)”
根据第七段“Nowadays, the parts of the villa that were once higher up the cliff are only a few meters above the sea. The whole area is slowly going down into the sea because of earthquakes and volcanic activity over the years, and the place where boats for servicing the villa had parked is now underwater.(如今,别墅中曾经位于悬崖上方的部分现在仅高出海平面几米。由于多年来地震和火山活动的影响,整个地区正在慢慢沉入海中,曾经停泊维修别墅船只的地方现在也在水下)”可知,从第七段我们可以了解到这栋别墅处于危险的境地。故选C。

G 37. A 38. F 39. D 40. B

上文“It is often used as a warning about the dangers of lending. (它常被用作对借贷风险的警示。)”说明莎士比亚的名言是对借贷风险的提醒。G项“但为什么借钱会对我们的友谊造成如此大的伤害呢?”通过“but”转折,由借贷风险具体聚焦到“对友谊的伤害”这一核心,既承接上文警示,又引出下文对该问题的展开论述。故选G。
【37题详解】
上文“If our friend or family member comes to us for hard cash, it can be very difficult to turn them away. (如果我们的朋友或家人来找我们借现金,我们很难拒绝。)”说明面对亲友借钱难以拒绝的情况。A项“你会感到有帮助他们的压力。”解释了“难以拒绝”的原因——心理上的帮助压力,且后文“And if that money doesn’t come back, it can lead to fights or even legal battles. (如果钱收不回来,可能会引发争执甚至法律纠纷。)”承接该情况可能带来的后果,逻辑连贯。故选A。
上文“And it’s not just the risk of losing the money, but the friendship could also be in danger. (这不仅有损失金钱的风险,友谊也可能陷入危险。)”说明借贷对友谊有威胁,后文“The lender becomes the one in control, while the borrower may feel uncomfortable with the new situation. (贷方成为掌控者,而借方可能对这种新情况感到不适。)”具体描述了借贷后双方关系的变化。F项“这是因为借贷改变了权力平衡。”作为中间衔接,解释了借贷威胁友谊的原因,且“权力平衡改变”与后文“贷方掌控、借方不适”的表述一致。故选F。
【39题详解】
下文“Saying ‘no’ is hard when a friend comes asking, but if you need that money, refusing is probably the best choice. (当朋友来借钱时,说‘不’很难,但如果你需要那笔钱,拒绝可能是最好的选择。)”强调在自身需要钱时应拒绝借出。D项“如果你承担不起(或拿不出)要借出去的钱,就不要借出。”作为该段主旨句,总领后文内容,“承担不起”既包括自身需要钱的情况,也涵盖其他无力借出的情形,后文具体展开了“承担不起”时的做法。故选D。
【40题详解】
上文“And if you do want to keep your friendship safe, when you need to borrow some money, what should you do? (如果你确实想保住友谊,当你需要借钱时,应该怎么做?)”提出借方为维系友谊的借钱方式问题。B项“也许银行是更好的选择。”针对该问题给出解决方案——向银行借钱而非亲友,从根源上避免了借贷可能对友谊造成的伤害,贴合前文“保住友谊”的核心诉求。故选B。

Dear Jenny,
I have heard that you have trouble making new friends in high school. It’s normal to feel upset when you are in a new environment.
First of all, it would be a good idea to join school clubs. You can meet classmates with the same interests there, which helps you make friends easily. Besides, I suggest you take part in the Orientation Day. It is a great chance to know more students. Last but not least, you had better give others a hand when they need help. Small kindnesses will help you build close connections.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I took my medical bag and hurried to the farmer’s house right away. The winter wind cut through my coat, but I pressed on without a second thought. When I arrived, I found the old man lying on the frozen ground, groaning in pain beside the fallen ladder. Kneeling down, I quickly checked his injuries; his ankle was badly swollen and bleeding. Speaking in a calm, gentle voice, I stopped the bleeding and bandaged the wound. Then, with the help of his worried family, we carried him inside and made him comfortable. “You’ll be fine,” I reassured him. Only when I was sure he was out of danger did I finally relax.
Several days later, the old farmer came to my clinic (诊所) with a basket of fresh vegetables. Smiling warmly, he handed me the basket full of leafy greens and ripe tomatoes from his garden. “Doctor, this is the least I can do,” he said, his eyes shining with gratitude. “You saved my life that day.” Holding the basket, I felt a wave of warmth wash over me. It was then that I knew, with absolute certainty, that returning to my hometown had been the right choice — not just for the meaningful work, but for the deep, lasting bonds I had found here.
