Unit 1 Festivals and Celebrations | Reading and Thinking
人教版(2019)高中英语 必修第三册
Unit 1 Festivals and Celebrations Reading and Thinking
导学案
Why Do We Celebrate Festivals?
Class: ____________ Name: ____________ Group: ______ Date: ________
一、学习目标
1. 能找出五段的主题句,把五段并成三个部分,说出全文是“总—分—总”。〔Activity 1、2〕
2. 能提取 P1 的四类起源与一个共同精神,说出 P2 三地丰收节各自的做法。〔Activity 3、4〕
3. 能分辨 P3 两处习俗变化的方向,正确使用 fade away 与 be established。〔Activity 5、Task 3〕
4. 能判断作者写给谁、为什么写、站不站队,并用课文的四条尺子判断四个武汉节庆。〔Activity 6、Task 1、Task 2〕
二、学习重难点
重点
① 五段的主题句都在段首,五句连起来就是一篇文章的骨架。〔Activity 1〕
② 三个部分:P1 提出,P2–P4 举例,P5 收束,末句与 P1 末句扣合。〔Activity 2〕
③ P3 两处变化方向不同:一处消失,一处换形保留。〔Activity 5〕
难点
① fade away 与 be established 都容易被读成“消失”。〔Activity 5〕
② P4 作者不站队,容易被读成“作者支持商业化”。〔Activity 6〕
四、词库 Word Bank(本课要用的课文原块,中间是中文,右栏是它出现的那一步)

a wide range of origins | 各种各样的起源/由来 | Activity 3 |
the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace | 分享喜悦、感恩、爱与和平的精神 | Activity 3 / Task 1 |

Which of the four would you call a festival? Tick one, and give one reason.
☐ A ☐ B ☐ C ☐ D Because ______________________________________
留好答案。下课前再投一次,可以改主意,改了的要说清为什么改。
Part B Ask the title
The title is one question. Before you read, give it two answers of your own, two or three words each.
Why do we celebrate festivals?
My answer 1:____________________ My answer 2:____________________
Prediction: the text has ______ paragraphs, so it probably gives ______ answers.
六、读中 While Reading
Activity 1 Topic sentence first (5 min)〔重点①〕
Read the five paragraphs and fill the table. Column two wants a sentence number, column three three or four words, column four what the paragraph is answering.
Paragraph | Topic sentence? (1 / 2 / 3 / last) | Its key words (3–4) | What it answers (3–5 words) |
P1 |
|
|
|
P2 |
|
|
|
P3 |
|
|
|
P4 |
|
|
|
P5 |
|
|
|
1. Look at column two again. What do the five have in common? ____________________
2. The title asks WHY. Each paragraph gives one ______.
(填一个名词,意思是“回答”。reason 是“为什么这么做”那类内容,不是这里要的词。)
Activity 2 Three parts, one shape (3 min)〔重点②〕
The five paragraphs all answer the title, but they do not stand side by side. Group them into three parts and say what each part does.
Part | Paragraphs | What this part does | Key words from the text |
1 提出 |
| raises the general idea |
|
2 举例 |
| gives the particular cases, one aspect each |
|
3 收束 |
| returns to the general idea and answers the title |
|
1. The last sentence of P1 and the last sentence of P5 say the same thing. Put the two halves together:
The spirit of ________________ is common in all festivals, so different cultures actually ________________.
2. P2–P4 are in this order for a reason. Would the text still work if P4 came first? One sentence, to your partner.
(这一层的名字:General–Particular–Conclusion,即“总—分—总”。)
Activity 3 P1: many origins, one spirit (3 min)〔重点②〕
1. Complete the four kinds of origins.
the seasons of the year / r________ / famous figures / i________ e________

Unit 1 Festivals and Celebrations | Reading and Thinking
A. It adds one more origin. B. It turns from differences to what is common. C. It gives an example.
3. The writer sums up the common spirit in four words. Write them down.
________ ________ ________ ________
4. If you delete “However”, does the paragraph still work? Tell your partner in one sentence.
Activity 4 P2: one festival, three ways (4 min)〔重点②〕
When: ____________________(P2 第 2 句,说的是所有丰收节,不是某一个国家)
Where | What people do |
Ancient Egypt | a parade and a great feast, with music, dancing and sports |
Some European countries today | decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit; get together to celebrate over a meal |
China, Mid-Autumn Festival | families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy mooncakes |
1. The three places have little in common. Find the one sentence that explains why they sit in one paragraph, and underline it in the text.
(在课文上划线,不抄写。)
2. So what is this paragraph really proving? (Hint: the last sentence of P1.)
Activity 5 P3: two customs, two directions (3 min)〔重点③、难点①〕
Custom | What it used to be | What happened | Why (as the text says) |
Spring Festival firecrackers | lit to drive away evil spirits and celebrate the new year | many big cities have given up this custom | to avoid air pollution |
Halloween | a festival with religious origins | slowly became an exciting festival for children | not given in the text |
(Why 栏:课文没写的就写 not given in the text,不要替课文补理由。)
1. The two words come from the opening statement of P3, but the two examples use other verbs. Which word fits which custom? Then quote the verb the text actually uses. Firecrackers: ________(the text says: ________) Halloween: ________(the text says: ________)
2. Two examples, two directions. Why does the writer need both? (One alone would prove what?)
Activity 6 P4 + P5: the argument, then the answer (3 min)〔难点②〕
1. Two views in P4. Complete them using expressions from the text.
Some believe festivals ____________________________________.
Others believe the increase in spending ________________________.
2. Does the writer tell you which view he holds? Find the words that prove your answer.
3. P5 answers the title for the last time. Complete the three things festivals do for us, using words from P5.
They ________ people’s wishes, beliefs, faiths and attitudes towards life.
They are occasions that allow us to ____________ and enjoy life.
They help us understand where we came from, who we are, and ____________.
(第 1、3 题照课文填,不要自己造句。P5 前两空各一个词,第三空是 what we should 加一个动词。)
七、读后 After Reading
Task 1 Back to the four scenes (5 min,四人一组)〔目标 4、难点③〕
Each group takes one scene. Put it through the four tests, then report in 30 seconds.
Test | Question to ask | Your answer |
1 Origins (P1) | Which one of the four in P1? (season / religion / famous figure / important event) |
|
2 Spirit (P1) | What do people share: joy, gratitude, love, or peace? |
|
3 Change (P3) | Is a custom fading away, or being established in a new form? |
|
4 Money (P4) | Who takes advantage of the celebration? |
|
Report frame: “We think it ______ a festival, because __________________________.”
(没有固定答案。每一条判断都要有课文依据:一个词块,或一个具体事实。)
Task 2 Who wrote this, and to whom? (3 min)〔难点③〕
The writer never says who he is. The pronouns tell you.
Question | Look for | Your answer |
1 Who does “we / us / our” include? | “allow us to relax… and forget about our work” (P5) |
|
2 Who is it written for? | “if you study festivals carefully, you may be surprised” (P5) |
|
3 Why did he write it? | the title is a question; the last paragraph answers it |
|
4 Is he taking a side on money? | “Although some believe…, others believe…” (P4) |
|
