Unit 1 Festivals and Celebrations Period 1 Listening and Speaking
导学案
Festivals in Wuhan: A City That Celebrates
Class: Name: Group: Date:
There are six steps in this period. Tick a box when you finish one.
□ Step 1 □ Step 2 □ Step 3 □ Step 4 □ Step 5 □ Step 6
Ⅰ. Learning Objectives
By the end of this period, I will be able to:
- talk about the activities and customs of festivals in different countries;
- judge the relationship between two speakers by the way they talk to each other;
- use the sentence patterns for time, purpose and activities that appear in the listening text;
- introduce a Wuhan festival to a foreign friend in a clear order.
Ⅱ. Where We Start
You are a Senior One student in Wuhan, and this is the second term. A short conversation is not a problem for you — you usually catch the main idea on the first listening. Given ten minutes, you can also write four or five sentences about a festival you have celebrated.
What gets in the way is something else. Ask who is talking to whom, and most of you go by the voice: "he sounds like a reporter." That works half the time. The words answer the question better — how the two address each other, who asks, how formal the language is. Ask you to introduce a festival, and the ideas are there but the sentences are not; what comes out is "Wuhan, March, run, many people." Ask you to name a festival, and Spring Festival and Christmas come out first. The Yangtze River Crossing Festival and the Wuhan Marathon happen in your city every year, and before this lesson ends you will have said one of them aloud in English.
None of the three recordings is fast. Conversation 2 has a few words about clothes and shoes that may stop you. Each conversation is played three times, so do not give up at the first word you miss.
Ⅲ. Learning Focus and Difficult Points
Item | What it is | Where we deal with it | How I check myself |
Focus 1 | Which conversation goes with which festival, who is talking to whom, and what people do at each festival | Step 3, Activities 2, 3 and 4 | Activities 2–4 are done and checked |
Focus 2 | Introducing a festival in a clear order with the target patterns | Step 1 postcards and the Ⅳ table give the content; Step 5 Language Bank sorts the language | At least three patterns in my minute |
Difficult point 1 | Judging a relationship from the way people talk, not from the voice | Step 3, the "Listen for relationships" box and the "why do you think so" questions | Check 2 at the end of the sheet |
Difficult point 2 | Speaking for one minute without reading a script | Step 5, keywords only and a one-minute limit | My Keywords line has words, not sentences |
Ⅳ. Before Class · My Festival Memory
Think of three festivals you celebrated last year and fill in the table.
Name of the festival | When | What I did |

Ⅴ. In Class
Step 1 Lead-in · Wuhan Festival Postcards (8 min)
Task A Read and match. Here are four postcards about festivals in Wuhan. Read them and write the name of the festival in the table below.
Postcard 1

Every late March the hills around this big lake turn pink. Families walk under the trees, many of them in hanfu, taking photos. The best place to go is the cherry garden at Moshan.
Postcard 2
On 16 July the river turns into a race course. Swimmers jump in from the Wuchang bank and head for the other side, while crowds watch from both banks. The first one across takes the cup.
Postcard 3
On the fifth day of the first lunar month, the temple is already crowded before sunrise. People queue for hours to welcome the God of Wealth and wish for a good year. Inside the Luohan Hall, many of them count the Luohan statues to see what the new year will bring.
Postcard 4
In March, thirty thousand runners set off from the riverside in Hankou. They cross the Han River and the Yangtze, pass the Yellow Crane Tower and the East Lake, and finish on the riverside in Qingshan. The cherry trees along the road are in flower, bands play at music stations, and strangers shout "Jiayou!" all the way.

Task B 3-2-1. Choose one postcard and finish the notes.
Three things I can see: __
Two things people do: __
One question I still have: __
Task C Pair talk. Which of the four festivals would you take a foreign friend to? Tell your partner in 30 seconds.
I'd take him or her to , because .
Task D Back to the book. Look at the photo on the opening page. The men are performing the fire dragon dance in Puzhai Town, Guangdong Province, on the night of the Lantern Festival. The dragon is made of bamboo and paper, and thousands of fireworks are fixed all over its body. Wuhan has its own dragon. Read the note and complete the table. If the text does not give the information, write “not mentioned”.
Hanyang High Dragon Dance
From the eleventh day of the first lunar month to the Lantern Festival, the riverside neighbourhoods of Hanyang put on the High Dragon Dance. The dragon is built on a thick bamboo pole and held upright, so it dances high above the crowd — the head alone is four metres tall. The strongest dancer lifts it with his hands, his shoulders, even his teeth. People do it to ask for good weather and a good harvest.

Photo | Festival | Words or phrases (numbers) |
A | Chinese Lantern Festival |

Task B Predict. For each festival, write two activities from the box that you expect to hear in the recording. You don't have to be right — we will check later.
Rio Carnival: __
Coming-of-Age Day: __
Chinese Lantern Festival: __
Step 3 While-listening · Three Conversations (15 min)
Listen for relationships To listen for a relationship, pay attention to how people talk to each other (for example, friends usually call each other by first names) and to particular questions in the conversation.
