I used to think recipes were promises. If I followed every line, the cake would rise and dinner would turn out well. My grandmother would probably have laughed at that. She cooked from memory and attention. “Stop when it looks right,” she would say. “Add flour until the dough feels soft but not sticky.” To a child who wanted clear answers, this sounded almost unfair.
Years later, I came across a medieval (中世纪的) recipe for sambocade, a kind of cheesecake. It gave no exact measurements. It simply told the cook to make a crust, prepare the curds, add sugar, egg whites and elderflowers, and bake it. At first, I found it nearly useless. How much sugar? How many eggs? How hot should the oven be? Then I understood: the recipe was not meant to teach a beginner from zero. It was more like a reminder, pointing back to knowledge learned by watching, touching, smelling and trying again.
That was how my grandmother cooked. Her own recipes were only lists of ingredients kept in an old shoe box. After she died, my mother threw the box away, thinking it had no value without instructions. I understood her choice. To anyone else, “flour, eggs, milk, sugar” was hardly a recipe. Yet something was lost with that box — not complete knowledge, but traces of a way of knowing.
Today, we often expect recipes to protect us from uncertainty. We want grams, minutes and temperatures. Careful measurement is useful, of course. But cooking is not only measurement. A good cook notices when butter begins to smell nutty, when dough resists the hand, and when a cake is pale enough to leave the oven. Such knowledge cannot be fully written down. It must be practiced in the body.
Now, whenever I bake, I still hear my grandmother’s question: “Is it pale enough yet?” It is not exactly a rule. It is a way of paying attention.
4. Why did the author once find her grandmother’s instructions “almost unfair”?
A. They sounded too old. B. They lacked clear rules.
C. They changed too often. D. They used rare ingredients.
5. Why is the medieval recipe mentioned?
A. To introduce a special sweet dessert.
B. To prove old recipes are useless.
C. To explain what Grandma’s cooking was like.
D. To compare different kinds of dishes.
6. What does the shoe box mainly represent in paragraph 3?
A. Lost family wealth. B. Complete cooking records.
C. A forgotten dessert. D. Knowledge through practice.
7. What is the author’s view on recipes?
A. Accuracy removes uncertainty. B. Practice gives recipes meaning.
C. Old recipes work better. D. Good memory matters most.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B

根据原文第一段““Stop when it looks right,” she would say. “Add flour until the dough feels soft but not sticky.” To a child who wanted clear answers, this sounded almost unfair.(“当看起来合适的时候就停下吧,”她会说。“往面团里加面粉,直到面团摸起来柔软但又不黏手。”对于那个渴望得到明确答案的孩子来说,这听起来似乎有些不公平。)”可知,祖母的烹饪指引没有清晰固定的标准。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第二段“Years later, I came across a medieval (中世纪的) recipe for sambocade, a kind of cheesecake. It gave no exact measurements.(多年后,我偶然发现一份中世纪的sambocade芝士蛋糕食谱。这份食谱没有标注精确用量。)”和第三段“That was how my grandmother cooked.(这正是奶奶的做菜方式。)”
根据原文第三段“Yet something was lost with that box — not complete knowledge, but traces of a way of knowing.(然而,随着那个盒子的丢失带走了某些东西——并非是完整的知识,而是某种认知方式的痕迹。)”
根据原文第四段“Such knowledge cannot be fully written down. It must be practiced in the body.(这样的知识无法被完整地写下来。它必须在身体的实践中习得。)”可知,作者对食谱的观点是实操赋予食谱真正的内涵与价值。

Squid (鱿鱼) are widely seen as one of the most intelligent animals in the ocean. Across 375 species, squid can hunt together, recognize individual humans and learn from experience. However, according to an ongoing scientific study, ocean acidification (酸化), an often overlooked effect of human-caused climate change, could change this within decades.
Researchers raised baby squid in separate tanks — one reflecting present-day ocean CO₂ (pH 8.2) and the other representing CO₂ levels in the year 2100 based on a climate change prediction model (pH 7.8). After 90 days, the squid were removed and their heads were kept for analysis. Dr. Allen discovered that the brains of squid from the high-acid tank were 49% smaller in volume than the brains of squid raised under current CO₂ conditions.
The most striking damage occurs in the squid’s brain regions responsible for handling visual information, which shrink (收缩) by over 50%. This brain damage directly leads to changes in behavior. An earlier study found that squid exposed to high CO₂ hunt less often, and Dr. Allen links this to weaker vision. He believes the shrinking brain makes it harder for brain cells to pass signals correctly, which in turn affects their judgment and makes them less sure while hunting.
The oceans take in nearly 30% of human-released CO₂, which has raised seawater acidity by about 30%, says the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA predicts ocean acidity could rise another 100% — 150% by the end of this century if we keep releasing CO₂ at the current rate. If wild squid suffer the same brain damage, the impact could spread through the entire ocean food chain.
Squid are not the only sea animals at risk, but their sharp ability to learn makes their loss especially troubling. As our oceans grow more acidic, we may not only be changing what lives in the sea — but also how smart those creatures can be.
8. What did Dr. Allen’s research find about squid?
A. Today’s oceans made their growth faster.
B. Acidic water made their brains smaller.
C. High CO₂ made their learning better.
D. Climate change made their lifespan shorter.
9. What causes squid to hunt less often in high CO₂ water?
A. A lack of food sources. B. A drop in physical strength.
C. A rise in sea temperatures. D. A decline in visual ability.
10. Why does the author mention the data from NOAA in paragraph 4?
A. To predict the future of different sea animals.
B. To prove human activities’ impact on global warming.
C. To warn of the seriousness of current ocean acidification.
D. To compare the CO₂ absorption rates of different periods.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Acidification: A Hidden Threat to Marine Intelligence
B. Climate Change: A Big Killer of Intelligent Squids
C. Food Chain Crisis: A Result of Human Actions
D. Squid: A Smart Sign of Ocean Acidification
B 9. D 10. C 11. A

Allen discovered that the brains of squid from the high-acid tank were 49% smaller in volume than the brains of squid raised under current CO₂ conditions. (Allen博士发现,在高酸性水箱中长大的鱿鱼,其大脑体积比在当前二氧化碳条件下长大的鱿鱼小49%。)”可知,该研究发现酸性的水会导致鱿鱼的大脑变小。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“An earlier study found that squid exposed to high CO₂ hunt less often, and Dr. Allen links this to weaker vision. (一项早期研究发现,暴露在高浓度二氧化碳环境中的鱿鱼捕猎次数减少,Allen博士将此归因于视力减弱。)”可知,视觉能力的下降导致了鱿鱼捕猎频率的降低。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The oceans take in nearly 30% of human-released CO₂, which has raised seawater acidity by about 30%... NOAA predicts ocean acidity could rise another 100% — 150% by the end of this century if we keep releasing CO₂ at the current rate. (海洋吸收了人类排放的近30%二氧化碳,海水酸度因此上升约30%……美国国家海洋和大气管理局预测,如果我们继续以当前速度排放二氧化碳,到本世纪末,海洋酸度可能再上升100%至150%。)”可知,这些数据触目惊心,作者的目的是向读者发出警告,强调当前海洋酸化问题的严重性。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Squid (鱿鱼) are widely seen as one of the most intelligent animals in the ocean...However, according to an ongoing scientific study, ocean acidification (酸化), an often overlooked effect of human-caused climate change, could change this within decades.

If you could take a pill to “cure” your loneliness, would you take it? The “loneliness epidemic (流行病)” has been widely reported and commented upon across the world in recent years, affecting young and old. There have even been numerous urgent calls by governments to address it. However, some researchers question whether we really have the credible data to back up such claims. Should we struggle to eradicate it, as we would a virus or a disease?
Psychologist James Hillman had concerns about viewing loneliness as a pathology (病理学). He noted that solutions like socializing in recovery groups suggest we should get rid of loneliness. But Hillman argued that if loneliness is a natural part of us, it will naturally come and go throughout our lives, regardless of our efforts to avoid it.
I have spent much of my career researching loneliness, conducting hundreds of interviews and observing its many versions across all ages. My findings suggest that loneliness is not a single feeling but a label for a range of human experiences and unmet needs related to disconnection, which may be inevitable at times. In my book All the Lonely People: Conversations on Loneliness, I present various examples of loneliness, drawn from numerous projects and interviews, each offering a glimpse into different aspects of this condition.
Stories help us identify what loneliness looks like and how it is lived. They also show that loneliness is part of most people’ s life journeys. Accepting this reality may be more sensible than pathologizing it, which can create shame and force people to hide their loneliness.
This is not to ignore loneliness, which is challenging and difficult. But stories allow us to share our loneliness, unburden ourselves, and connect with others. The suffering in loneliness often originates from being alone with it. Ultimately, the answer to loneliness may lie in learning to live alongside it, rather than denying its existence or trying to root it out.
12. What does the underlined word “eradicate” most probably mean?
A. Remove. B. Change. C. Highlight. D. Identify.
13. What is the author’s research approach to studying loneliness?
A. Observing physical responses in trials. B. Collecting a variety or typical cases
C. Reviewing published research papers. D. Taking a questionnaire survey analysis.
14. What is the main purpose of the author sharing “stories”?
A. To inform how loneliness varies with age. B. To emphasize the importance of storytelling.
C. To show complexities of human loneliness. D. To express his sympathy for the suffering.
15. What is the author’s suggestion for the issue of loneliness?
A. Overcome it by staying busy. B. Engage with social activities.
C. Coexist peacefully with it. D. Turn to experts for guidance.
A 13. B 14. C 15. C

根据划线词上文“If you could take a pill to “cure” your loneliness, would you take it?(如果你能吃一颗药丸来“治愈”你的孤独,你会吃吗?)” 故选A。
根据第三段“I have spent much of my career researching loneliness, conducting hundreds of interviews and observing its many versions across all ages.
根据第四段“Stories help us identify what loneliness looks like and how it is lived. They also show that loneliness is part of most people’ s life journeys. Accepting this reality may be more sensible than pathologizing it, which can create shame and force people to hide their loneliness.
根据最后一段中“Ultimately, the answer to loneliness may lie in learning to live alongside it, rather than denying its existence or trying to root it out. (最终,孤独的答案可能在于学会与它共存,而不是否认它的存在或试图根除它)”可知,作者建议与其试图完全消除孤独,不如学会与孤独和平共处。故选C。

How to Reduce Soreness After a workout
Exercise recovery can reduce your risk of injury and soreness (酸疼), helping improve athletic performance. But many people ignore these activities after working out. ____16____ Whether you’re a professional athlete or new to fitness, here are four activities to do after working out.
Cool down for 10-15 minutes. When you exercise, your heart shifts blood flow away from organs that aren’t being used, and sends it to your muscles to help them contract. After your main workout, spend 10-15 minutes doing low-intensity activities like slow jogging or walking. ____17____ When people skip this step, they might experience a big drop in blood pressure and feel dizzy.
Try rolling out your muscles. You can buy a foam roller, though gyms usually provide some for members. Place your foam roller on the ground and lie down on top of it, making sure the muscle you want to hit is positioned above. Then slowly roll your body back and forth for about a minute before hitting the next muscle. ____18____
____19____ According to guidance from the Mayo Clinic, while it’s easy to skip this step, stretching is the key to preventing injury. Doing it regularly helps improve flexibility and range of movement. Remember to hold each stretch for about 30 seconds without pushing to the point of pain. Simple stretches like the quad stretch or knee-to-chest stretch are great starters.
Eat protein to help build up muscles. ____20____ How you fuel yourself after a workout can actually make a difference, and the secret is protein. You can get protein from a variety of sources. If you’re rushing to get home after hitting the gym, try chocolate milk, protein shake or protein bar.
A. Stretch your muscles regularly.
B. Choose simple stretches to start.
C. Your muscles need fuel to repair and grow stronger.
D. Concentrate on the muscle groups you used during your workout.
E. If you are a professional athlete, you may need more recovery time.
F. This step helps to redirect blood flow back to your organs gradually.
G. People usually only schedule time for physical stress but none for self-care.
G 17. F 18. D 19. A 20. C

Leo was not excited about spending his Saturday afternoons at the Oakwood Nursing Home. It was a requirement for his high school graduation, but to him, the place smelled like old medicine and boredom. He usually spent his shifts doing the bare minimum: passing out water cups and avoiding eye contact.
His least favorite resident was Mr. Henderson, a grumpy (暴躁的) 80-year-old man who always sat in a wheelchair in the far corner of the recreation room. Mr. Henderson never smiled, never joined the group activities, and frequently complained about the “noisy teenagers”. Leo made sure to keep his distance, annoyed by the constant complaints. Yet there was one thing Leo had noticed about the old man. Mr. Henderson always kept a small, worn-out songbook on his lap.
One stormy Saturday, the nursing home was hosting its monthly music hour. The residents were gathered in the hall, eagerly waiting for the local volunteer band to arrive. However, at 2:00 p.m., the activity coordinator (协调员), Sarah, rushed in looking panicked. “The band’s bus broke down on the way here,” she announced, her voice shaking slightly. “They can’t make it.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the room. Some residents sighed heavily; others lowered their heads. Sarah looked around helplessly, her eyes landing on an old, dusty piano in the corner of the room. “Does anyone know how to play?” she asked the room.
Leo froze. He had been playing the piano since he was six and was exceptionally good at it. But the thought of playing in front of a crowd terrified him. He looked at the floor, hoping nobody would notice him. But then, he glanced up at the residents. For the first time, Leo didn’t see a room full of annoying strangers. He saw disappointed people who had been looking forward to this small moment of joy. His eyes stopped at Mr. Henderson, noticing the usual anger had disappeared from his face. Instead, he was staring silently at the empty piano.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
At that moment, Leo made a decision.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
At that moment, Leo made a decision. He took a deep breath and walked to the piano. His hands trembled slightly as he sat down, but when his fingers touched the keys, a familiar tune filled the room. He began to play a classic song. The residents were startled at first, but soon they were immersed in the beautiful music. Some closed their eyes, savoring the moment, while others nodded gently with the rhythm. Mr. Henderson also leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on Leo, as if he was trying to recall something.
To everyone’s surprise, a rough, shaky voice began to sing along to the music. It was Mr. Henderson. He opened his mouth, and although his voice was not as clear as it used to be, it carried a deep emotion. He sang with all his heart. Other residents also joined in, and the room was filled with the harmonious sound of music and singing. Leo was deeply moved, and his fingers became more and more dexterous on the keys. At that moment, the storm outside seemed to fade away, and only the warmth and joy in the room remained.

C

注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
At that moment, Leo made a decision.
