Sometimes, a simple hobby can become something much greater. For Richard Sears, a 76-year-old American, his interest in Chinese characters didn't just stay a hobby. It turned into a goal to share their beauty with the world. That’s why people call him Uncle Hanzi.
In 1972, Sears started to learn Chinese. At first, he found it hard to read and write Chinese characters. Then he learned that there were stories behind Chinese characters. “It will be easy if I know them,” Sears thought.
Then Sears started to study jiaguwen and learn the origins (起源) of each Chinese character. He spent many years reading books and visiting museums in China.
Later, to help more people learn Chinese easily, Sears built a website and it showed about 100,000 pictures and the origins of Chinese characters. People around the world could teach themselves Chinese through the website at any time. Now more than one million people visit it every month and its users are from over 170 countries.

Many people believe that pigs are naturally fat, lazy and dirty. But are any of those things true?
It is true that pigs are fat. They eat a lot. But they are useful to us. We get more than just pork from pigs. We can use their skin to make shoes. We can use their hair to make brushes. Pigs also provide us with ingredients for drugs like insulin. Insulin can treat diabetes (糖尿病).
People sometimes say, “You are as stupid as a pig.” But pigs are not stupid. In fact, pigs are one of the 10 smartest animals. They have a good memory and can tell different shapes apart. Many experts think pigs are easier to train than dogs or cats. In France, people teach pigs to find something. With their good sense of smell, they can find it even faster than dogs.
When you see pigs, they are usually in dirty water or mud. That’s because pigs have no sweat glands (汗腺). On hot days, they have to cool themselves in water or mud. This keeps insects off them as well. Mud can also protect their skin from sunburn.
These opinions of pigs often make us have wrong ideas about the animal. For example, if someone eats a lot, we say that they have “pigged out”. If someone’s room is very messy, we might say his or her room looks like a pigsty.
But people in ancient China really liked pigs. People thought the pig’s big head and ears were a symbol of good luck. If someone had a round and full face, he or she was thought to be blessed. People also believed the animal stood for (代表) wealth, as humans used every part of the pig. Piggy banks are a symbol of this. Most children have a piggy bank that they can use to save money.
31. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE about pigs?
A. We can make shoes with pig’s hair. B. Pig’s skin can be used to make brushes.
C. Pigs can only provide pork for people. D. Pigs are useful in helping treat diabetes.
32. Why do pigs usually stay in dirty water or mud?
A. Because they like being dirty.
B. Because they have no sweat glands.
C. Because they want to clean their skin.
D. Because they like to play with dirty water and mud.
33. What can pigs do better than dogs according to the passage?
A. Remember different shapes. B. Find things with their sense of smell.
C. Learn to do difficult jobs. D. Stay cool on hot days.
34. What does the underlined phrase “pigged out” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Were big enough. B. Had a diet.
C. Had too much. D. Ran away.
35. According to the last paragraph, we can know the following EXCEPT ________.
A. pigs were thought to stand for wealth
B. people in ancient China really liked pigs
C. the pig’s big head and ears were thought to be a symbol of good luck
D. people who had a round and full face were thought to be unlucky

Around the world, there are about 7,000 National Parks. Most of them cover huge areas of land where nobody lives. However, the National Parks in England include places where people live and work, as well as wild areas where there are few human activities.
The National Parks in England are called “England’s Breathing Spaces” because they are places where people can go to be in the open air, away from the dirt and noise of cities. They provide wonderful scenes of mountains, woods, grasslands and wetlands. And there are plenty of activities to do in all of the National Parks in England. Visitors can walk or ride bikes for fun. Many of the parks put on activities for families.
Every year there are about 110 million visitors to the parks, bringing many benefits to the areas. At the same time, it creates problems too. First, life can be difficult for local people. Car parks and roads are too crowded. Gift shops and cafes take the place of many everyday shops. Even house prices in some areas can become too high. Besides, country roads can be damaged (损害), for too many people walk, cycle or ride horses on them. Roads can be rebuilt, but then they look less natural. Another big problem to the National Parks is litter. In the parks it is a danger to wild animals. Broken glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays of the sun. Such fires in wild places can be out of control.
▲ ? All National Parks in England are making more rules, which tell people how to take good care of their environment. If these rules are followed, the National Parks will be well kept and continue to give pleasure to many people for a very long time.
36. Visitors to the National Parks in England can ________.
A. give food to wild animals B. drive cars on the grasslands
C. enjoy fresh air and peaceful time D. have fun farming with local people
37. The third paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A. the problems of the National Parks B. the pollution caused by visitors
C. the development of the National Parks D. the benefits brought by visitors
38. Which of the following is NOT a problem caused by visitors according to the passage?
A. Crowded roads and car parks. B. High house prices in some areas.
C. Wild animals losing their homes. D. Litter that endangers wild animals.
39. Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?

In Spain, a growing number of children and their parents are riding bikes to school together in large groups. This is a program called “bicibús”.
The story of bicibús began in Barcelona last year. A small group of only five children started this new way of going to school on Fridays—riding their bikes. The program grew really quickly to lots of riders. The activity starts around 8:25 in the morning, and it tells children which street they will go along before it starts, so everyone knows where to join. With lively music playing and bike bells ringing (响起铃声) joyfully, it feels like a happy street party.
While riding bikes to school sounds exciting, it can be quite dangerous for young children in a busy city. There are a few bike lanes (小路), but the city streets are always filled with lots of cars. One of the main roads has about 20,000 cars every day. To keep the kids safe, the local police offer important help. They ride in front of and behind the riders.
Riding with friends is an unforgettable experience and a lot of fun for children. Nine-year-old María says, “The best part of the bicibús is that we ride along the street, pick up our friends, and then we ride together to school.”
Parents want the bicibús to help change people’s ideas about getting around in the city. They also want the city to create more kid-friendly bike lanes.
Now, there are quite a few pictures and videos of the bicibús online. Many people say, “What a wonderful and creative idea it is!”

C. Because they want to clean their skin.
D. Because they like to play with dirty water and mud.
33. What can pigs do better than dogs according to the passage?
A. Remember different shapes. B. Find things with their sense of smell.

A. Were big enough. B. Had a diet.
