前文“Can you remember what you ate for breakfast a week ago?”暗示很难记住,且后文转折说大脑只记重要的“However, our brains have the ability to remember what is important for survival.”,可知记住每个细节对大多数人来说是“不可能”的,选impossible。
根据前文“where to find food or which places were dangerous”及“life and death”可知,过去面临的是生存“危险”,选dangers。
根据破折号后的例子“a friend’s birthday or an important exam date”可知,这些都是对人们“重要”的事情,选important。

前段讲记忆存储信息,本段讲记忆不像录像记录,它会随时间变化“memory is not like a video recording. It can be changed over time.”,前后语义存在转折关系,用“然而”,选However。
根据后文“eyewitness accounts can sometimes be unreliable”可知,是在提取或“回忆”记忆时发生扭曲,选recall。

What you need to do:
Write a short passage about one person you admire.
Describe his or her experiences and great qualities.
Hand in your writing before Oct. 18.
Ask Ms. Wang for further information.
Here is a sample student article for your reference (参考):
My Hero—Katherine Johnson
Katherine Johnson was a great American mathematician (数学家). Many years ago, women were seldom allowed to take part in key space work. At first, Katherine only got low-paying jobs at NASA. But she never lost hope. She was good at solving difficult math problems without modern computers. In 1962, astronaut John Glenn refused to fly unless Katherine checked the flight numbers. She finished the hard math work quickly and proved the safety of this flight. Later, she also took part in the moon-landing project. Katherine faced unfair rules in her life, but she kept working hard. Her talent and courage helped space programmes make great progress. She never thought race or gender (性别) could set limits for a person. Lots of people look up to her. This spirit still lives on and encourages girls interested in science today.

C
How does our brain decide what to remember and what to forget? Scientists have discovered that emotion plays a huge role. We are much more likely to remember events that made us feel strong emotions—like joy, fear, or surprise—than events that were boring.
This is because of a part of the brain called the amygdala (杏仁核). When we experience something emotional, the amygdala “tags” (标记) the memory. It tells the brain, “This is important! Remember this!” This is why you can probably remember exactly what you were doing on your 10th birthday, but you can’t remember what you ate for lunch three Tuesdays ago.
This “emotional memory” was very useful for our ancestors. Remembering which berry made them sick (fear) or where they found sweet fruit (joy) helped them survive. Today, it still affects us. A student is more likely to remember a science experiment that ended with a loud bang (surprise) than one that was quiet.
However, this can also be a problem. If a student has a very embarrassing moment in class, they might remember it for years, even though it’s not important for survival. Understanding this can help us. If we want to remember something, we should try to connect it to an emotion. Making learning fun and exciting is not just enjoyable; it’s a smart memory strategy.
26. According to the text, which memory is the brain most likely to keep?
A. A boring daily routine. B. A quiet moment of rest.
C. An event causing strong feelings. D. A list of unrelated facts.
27. What is the function of the amygdala?
A. To control body movements. B. To mark important emotional memories.
C. To help us forget painful experiences. D. To store long-term memories.
28. Why did the writer mention “our ancestors” in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain why emotional memory was useful for survival.
B. To compare modern life with ancient times.
C. To show that people today are less emotional.
D. To describe how they found food.
29. What is the writer’s suggestion for better memory?
A. Avoid all emotional experiences. B. Connect what you learn with emotions.
C. Only study important survival skills. D. Forget embarrassing moments quickly.
30. How is the passage organized?
A. Opinion→examples→reasons→conclusion
B. Question→explanation→examples→advice
C. Facts→comparisons→stories→warnings
D. Problem→causes→solutions→results
C 27. B 28. A 29. B 30. B

If you think you don’t learn a foreign language well, what can you do? Experts say that we can all learn from the behavior of good language learners to become better at languages.
Good language learners look for chances to hear and use the new language outside of the classroom, so they learn the language more quickly. They can talk to salesmen, join sports clubs, or even talk to people in coffee stores. All of these activities are helpful and can also be fun.
What’s more, good language learners try different ways to make their messages understood. If they don’t know the word for “laundromat”, they might say “the place where you can wash clothes”. If that doesn’t work, they might even try drawing a laundromat with washing machines, or acting. The point is that good language learners are creative and don’t easily give up. Because of these qualities, they can learn more and better.
Finally, good language learners are prepared to take risks. They think that making mistakes is ▲ . If they don’t understand what someone says the first time, they aren’t afraid to ask him to repeat it again and again until they do understand. Or, if someone corrects their pronunciation or grammar, they try to remember instead of becoming shy.
Learning a language well takes time. However, looking for chances to practice the language, trying different ways to communicate, taking risks, and being prepared to make mistakes will help you become a confident language learner.
31. Why do good language learners learn a language more quickly according to the passage?
A. Because they are really smart.
B. Because they join different language clubs.
C. Because they try to practice the language often.
D. Because they spend lots of time remembering word lists.
32. How does the writer support his idea in Paragraph 3?
A. By showing some news. B. By giving an example.
C. By drawing pictures. D. By comparing two different learners.
33. Which of the following can be the missing word “▲”?
A. natural B. negative C. personal D. boring
34. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①/②③④⑤ B. ①/②③/④⑤ C. ①/②③④/⑤ D. ①②③/④/⑤
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The secrets of learning a language B. Some good ways to communicate
C. The differences among language learners D. Problems foreign language learners meet
31. C 32. B 33. A 34. C 35. A

Have you ever picked up a book about someone famous? Unlike a novel, a biography describes the life of a person. All the information is based on facts instead of imagination. ____36____
One good reason to read biographies is that they give you heroes who actually lived. When you read how Marie Curie worked in a cold lab, or how Jack Ma got refused many times, you realize success doesn’t come easily. ____37____ Also, you learn useful lessons without making the same mistakes. A biography is like a wise friend telling you, “Don’t do this. Do that instead.” For example, from Steve Jobs, you learn to follow your curiosity. From Helen Keller, you learn to never give up on yourself. ____38____ You get better at understanding long passages. You pick up new words naturally. And when you write an essay about a great person, you know what to say.
____39____ Here are a few ideas. Pick someone you are already interested in. Love soccer? Read about Messi. Like science? Try Yang Zhenning. Also, don’t try to finish a book in one day. Read a chapter (章) or two, and then stop. Think about what you just read. Finally, talk about the coolest fact with a classmate or your parents. When you tell others, you remember better.
Biographies are not just history, but also maps of how ordinary people stand out. Last month, I read a short biography of Xu Xiake, and I was amazed by how he travelled without a map. ____40____
A. So, how do you start?
B. I’ll continue with more biographies.
C. Reading biographies helps with your schoolwork too.
D. These stories lead you to face difficulties with bravery.
E. Reading biographies can change the way we see the world.

Since ancient times, people have looked up at the night sky and wondered about the universe. In the last century, the dream of space flight finally came true, and the exploration of the universe began in earnest Today, the discoveries made by space pioneers touch our lives in more ways than we realize.
First, satellites (卫星) change our daily life. Thousands of them circle the earth, giving us weather reports, TV programmes and radio services. Without them, pilots would lose their way on flights across the Atlantic Ocean, and sailors could not find a safe route home. For modern travel, satellites are as necessary as a compass.
Second, space heroes inspire the whole nation. When astronauts walk in space, they show great courage and wisdom. Young people look up to them, and their brave stories spread across the world, planting a seed of curiosity in every child’s heart.
However, there is another side. Old rockets and broken satellites are often left behind in space and become “space junk”. Some pieces fly as fast as bullets (子弹). If one hits a working satellite, the damage (损害) can be terrible. Scientists say that space junk is now a big danger to future exploration, so we must keep a balance between great dreams and real dangers.
Above all, space exploration reminds us that nothing is impossible. Its discoveries will live on forever and guide all mankind. Each new step in space is a step for everyone on Earth.
How space exploration ____51____ our world
For ____52____

Wall of Inspiration-Our Heroes
Do you have a person you look up to? Our class will create a wall of inspiration. We hope students can learn good qualities from inspiring pioneers.
21. According to the whole passage, which statement about the class activity is TRUE?
A. Students can hand in their writings on Oct. 18.
B. Students must interview Ms. Wang to finish their writing.
C. Students need to write about an admired person and his or her qualities.

23. What does the underlined phrase This spirit in the last paragraph of the sample article refer to?
A. The determination to make progress.
B. Refusing to do low-paying jobs at NASA.
C. Working hard and believing people are not limited by race or gender.
D. Being brave enough to travel into outer space.
24. What can we infer from the sample article?
A. Katherine herself travelled into space with John Glenn.
B. Katherine’s hard work played an important role in space research.
C. Katherine got important high-pay core space work right from the start.
D. Katherine stopped working for NASA after John Glenn’s flight.
25. What is the main idea of the whole passage?
A. To show the history of American space programmes.
B. To introduce the life story of mathematician Katherine Johnson.
C. To tell students to write articles about people they admire for class activity.
D. To ask students to learn more about space science.
D
