As we know, movies play an important role in our lives nowadays. Many people love going to the movies or watching their favorite movies at home. Now let's learn some facts about movies.
Movies started in the late 1800s. In the early days, they were just short little clips( ) that only lasted a minute or two. People would go to movie theaters and watch one or two of these short clips. Nowadays, most movies are about 2 hours long and have become more popular and exciting.
Today, movies are a huge business. The most expensive movie ever cost over $300 million to produce! Most movies, though, cost between 20 and 100 million dollars to make. Some movies are such a big hit that they make a ton of money at the box office( ). The most successful movie of all time made over 2,700,000,000 dollars! That sum could buy a private island. Some other movies, however, end up in total failure and lose lots of money.
A lot of work goes into making a movie. Writers have to come up with a good story, directors must tell that story using cameras, actors, and special effects. It's a big team project. Imagine wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset (虚拟现实头显) and seeing a delicious ice cream in front of you. What if you could “taste” it without taking a bite? You can’t feel the coldness in your mouth, but you can taste its sweetness thanks to a tasting device (设备).
Scientists created a new device known as the e-Taste. It could make the VR experience even more real. To use the device, the users need to wear it in the mouth. The device has five different chemicals (化学物质) inside. It can mix these chemicals to recreate the tastes of different food or drinks. Then the device sends the taste directly to the user’s tongue.
To test their device, the scientists let users wear it. Then users “tasted” different food and drinks with the device. After that, there was a list of possible names for them to choose from. The choices were cake, coffee, fish soup, fried egg, and lemonade. Users easily guessed the tastes of cake and lemonade. However, they had a harder time telling the difference between the rest.
While the device still needs improvement, it makes virtual food experiences possible. It could also help people without a sense of taste. More importantly, the device could give scientists new ideas and help them learn about how the brain understands information from the mouth.

Zheng Chenggong (1624—1662), also known as Koxinga, is best known for setting up Chinese control over Taiwan.
Zheng was born in Hirado, Japan to a Japanese mother and a Chinese father. His father was given an official position by the Ming Dynasty, so he moved to Fujian Province at seven. Zheng was given a Confucian education in Nanjing in 1644.
The next year, the Ming Dynasty gave way to the Qing Dynasty. When the Qing Dynasty forces entered Fujian, his father surrendered (投降). But Zheng, being against his father's orders, made up his mind to rebuild the Ming Dynasty and began to build up land and naval (海军的) forces.
Over the next 12 years, Zheng had built a strong position on the Fujian coast, centred on the islands of Xiamen and Jinmen. In 1659, Zheng carried out one of his most important actions. With a force of more than 100,000 up the Yangtze River, he succeeded. There, however, wrong decisions led to a terrible loss.
Facing increasing pressure, he hit upon the plan of taking Taiwan from the Dutch (荷兰人). In 1661, he landed on Taiwan and fought for nine months. At last, the Dutch surrendered and left Tainan. Zheng then set up a governing system, settled the island with his soldiers and families from Fujian and spread Chinese culture. His larger goals were cut short by his death in 1662.
At last, Zheng's plans failed, but he became amazingly popular all over the world. In Japan, the famous play, The Battles of Koxinga (1715), made Zheng well known to Japanese. In Europe, Zheng was famous for driving the Dutch away. In China, he soon became a popular spirit and cultural hero to the early Chinese in Taiwan. On the official level, in 1875 the Qing government recognised him as a symbol of loyalty (忠诚) and built a temple to honour him in Taiwan. Today, Zheng Chenggong is still remembered as a national hero in Chinese history.

In China, when it comes to traditional clothing, Hanfu and Qipao are the most popular. Hanfu was first created by Han people. Its color, style and even the length are about Chinese culture. Hanfu first appeared in the Shang Dynasty over 3,000 years ago. It was popular for a long time in Chinese history from the Qin Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. At the starting of the Qing Dynasty, however, it lost its popularity. With people turning their interest to traditional culture, Hanfu has been enjoyed more greatly in recent years.
Qipao became popular in the 1920s and remained as the "national clothing" until the 1950s. At first, people made it wide, covering most parts of the body. Yet it was not beautiful and people wanted a more beautiful kind of clothing. So in the 1930s, people made the traditional Qipao tight to show the beauty of a woman's body. Now, lots of women still like to wear it.
The Chinese tunic suit (中山装) looked simple but good, so it quickly became popular among Chinese men in the mid-20th century. Although other kinds of clothing have taken its place now, leaders of China still wear it when going to important events.
