Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.
Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.
“You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit—known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.”
It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works.
Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.”
Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit?
Trost thinks so.
“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says.
And you’ll never be without something to read.
19. Why did BART start the kiosk program?
A. To promote the local culture. B. To discourage phone use.
C. To meet passengers’ needs. D. To reduce its running costs.
20. How are the stories categorized (分类) in the kiosk?
A. By popularity. B. By length. C. By theme. D. By language.
21. What has Trost been doing recently?
A. Organizing a story contest. B. Doing a survey of customers.
C. Choosing a print publisher. D. Conducting interviews with artists.
22. What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future?
A. It will close down. B. Its profits will decline.
C. It will expand nationwide. D. Its ridership will increase.
【答案】19. C 20. B 21. A 22. D

We all know fresh is best when it comes to food. However, most produce at the store went through weeks of travel and covered hundreds of miles before reaching the table. While farmers’ markets are a solid choice to reduce the journey, Babylon Micro-Farm (BMF) shortens it even more.
BMF is an indoor garden system. It can be set up for a family. Additionally, it could serve a larger audience such as a hospital, restaurant or school. The innovative design requires little effort to achieve a reliable weekly supply of fresh greens.
Specifically, it’s a farm that relies on new technology. By connecting through the Cloud, BMF is remotely monitored. Also, there is a convenient app that provides growing data in real time. Because the system is automated, it significantly reduces the amount of water needed to grow plants. Rather than watering rows of soil, the system provides just the right amount to each plant. After harvest, users simply replace the plants with a new pre-seeded pod (容器) to get the next growth cycle started.
Moreover, having a system in the same building where it’s eaten means zero emissions (排放) from transporting plants from soil to salad. In addition, there’s no need for pesticides and other chemicals that pollute traditional farms and the surrounding environment.
BMF employees live out sustainability in their everyday lives. About half of them walk or bike to work. Inside the office, they encourage recycling and waste reduction by limiting garbage cans and avoiding single-use plastic. “We are passionate about reducing waste, carbon and chemicals in our environment,” said a BMF employee.
23. What can be learned about BMF from paragraph 1?
A. It guarantees the variety of food.
B. It requires day-to-day care.
C. It cuts the farm-to-table distance.
D. It relies on farmers’ markets.
24. What information does the convenient app offer?
A. Real-time weather changes. B. Current condition of the plants.
C. Chemical pollutants in the soil. D. Availability of pre-seeded pods.
25. What can be concluded about BMF employees?
A. They have a great passion for sports.
B. They are devoted to community service.
C. They are fond of sharing daily experiences.
D. They have a strong environmental awareness.
26. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. BMF’s major strengths. B. BMF’s general management.
C. BMF’s global influence. D. BMF’s technical standards.
【答案】23. C 24. B 25. D 26. A

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, has emerged as a pioneer in educational technology. Its latest model, DeepSeek-R1, combines advanced machine learning methods to provide personalized learning solutions for students worldwide.
Unlike traditional AI models that rely on pre-programmed answers, DeepSeek-R1 uses reinforcement (强化) learning to simulate human reasoning. This allows it to guide students through problem-solving step by step, much like a patient tutor. For example, when a student struggles with a math equation, DeepSeek-R1 doesn’t just give the answer; it breaks down the logic, identifies errors, and encourages critical thinking.
The model’s applications extend beyond academics. In language learning, it analyzes students’ pronunciation through AI speech recognition and offers real-time feedback. For teachers, DeepSeek-R1 can generate lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards and even predict students’ learning difficulties based on historical data. Its “adaptive testing” feature creates customized quizzes that adjust difficulty according to individual progress.
However, challenges remain. Critics argue that over-reliance on AI might reduce human interaction in education. DeepSeek’s developers address this by emphasizing its role as a “supplement, not a replacement.” As Dr. Li, a DeepSeek researcher, stated, “Our goal is to free teachers from repetitive tasks so they can focus on inspiring creativity.”
Looking ahead, DeepSeek aims to integrate virtual reality (VR) into its platform, allowing students to explore historical events or scientific concepts in immersive 3D environments. While ethical debates about AI in education persist, one thing is clear: tools like DeepSeek are reshaping how we learn, blending technology with human wisdom.
27. What makes DeepSeek-R1 different from traditional AI models?
A. It uses pre-programmed answers. B. It focuses on memorization techniques.
C. It replaces teachers in classrooms. D. It employs reinforcement learning for reasoning.
28. The underlined word “adaptive” in Paragraph 3 most likely means _____.
A. fixed B. adjustable C. complicated D. outdated
29. What can be inferred about DeepSeek’s future plans?
A. VR technology will enhance interactive learning.
B. It will eliminate all classroom activities.
C. It prioritizes profit over educational values.
D. Teachers will lose their jobs to AI.
30. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advertise DeepSeek products.
B. To criticize the risks of AI in schools.
C. To discuss AI’s role in transforming education.
D. To compare different AI models.
【答案】27. D 28. B 29. A 30. C

Ways to Teach Kids Work Ethic Early
Ever watched your child try to get out of doing housework by making excuses? If only the effort they put into avoiding responsibility could be redirected into, well, actual responsibility. In fact, building work ethic (道德) in kids doesn’t require military-style drills. Here are four simple and practical ways.
Make housework part of the family routine.
Involve your child in the daily running of the house: tidying toys, feeding the dog, watering the plants. ___31___ When the tasks become as routine as brushing teeth, kids internalise that helping with housework is simply part of life.
___32___
You can’t expect your child to tackle their tasks with enthusiasm while you’re complaining about loading the dishwasher. If your child sees you enjoying your work and taking pride in a job well done, they’re far more likely to do the same.
Build determination through goals.
___33___ Sometimes you have to help them find their “thing.” Set small, achievable goals together with them and celebrate progress, not perfection. The trick is to let them struggle a bit — resist the urge to help fix things the moment they experience a setback.
Treat mistakes as opportunities.
Few things strike fear into a child’s heart like the prospect of failing. The best way is to normalise mistakes as a natural part of learning. When kids mess up, don’t jump in with a rescue mission. ___34___
Teaching kids work ethic is to gently and consistently push them toward responsibility, determination, and pride in their efforts. ___35___ No worry. Those habits you’re building now are setting your child up for a lifetime of resilience (韧性) and satisfaction.
A. The key is consistency.
B. Help kids develop analytical skills.
C. Model the work ethic you want to see.
D. Instead, encourage them to do differently next time.
E. Sometimes, a cleaner living room is the best reward.
F. Progress can be slow, and you’ll wonder if it’s all sinking in.
G. Not every child is born with the willpower of a marathon runner.
【答案】31. A 32. C 33. G 34. D 35. F

【答案】
例文
Dear Jim,
Thanks for your letter. I’m doing well, though life is quite busy. It is truly an honor to study at this top school one year earlier than expected.
The first month was challenging but colorful. I have adapted to the fast-paced life and made many new friends who are always helpful. The teachers are knowledgeable and kind, too.
What impressed me most was the Science Festival held last week. We worked in groups to build a model robot. At first, I found it difficult to program it, but with my teammates’ help, we finally succeeded. This activity not only improved my practical skills but also taught me the importance of teamwork. It really inspired me to work harder on science subjects.
Though there are some pressures, I truly enjoy the life here. I believe I will grow much more in the future. Hope to hear from you soon. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

C

In tai chi, the dan tian is your qi core and qi in Chinese means life force. Now, I ___40___ (suppose) to feel the weight on my legs and sink my dan tian.
We move on to tai chi positions, of ___41___ there are forty-two in the style that Angela teaches. Today, we will only be doing the first nine. The movements have ___42___ (describe) names like “holding the bowl” and “grabbing the bird’s tail”.
