Many teenagers in Chengdu love to find quiet places to read after school. These places are not just places for buying books. They attract many visitors for coffee and different cultural activities. You may meet book sharing meetings there on weekends. The following places are free to enter and welcome teen readers all year round.
Which place would you choose for your reading trip?
Fangsuo Bookstore ★★★★★
Customer review
It lies in Taikoo Li. Its special building design surprises every visitor more than any other place. There are plenty of books about Sichuan history and art. It also serves homemade coffee and light cakes inside. The only trouble is that it becomes very crowded, especially on Saturday afternoons.
Tianfu Humanities and Arts Library ★★★★★
Customer review
The huge “book mountain” inside is very attractive. Soft seats with charging sockets(充电插座) help students study for many hours. It is a little far from the city centre, so you need to plan your trip early. Public buses and subway Line 6 can take you there.
Zhongshuge ★★★
Customer review
Many young visitors come here to take photos because of the amazing views made by mirror walls. It sits inside a shopping mall and opens from 10:00 to 22:00 every day except Monday. However, there are not enough seats for reading in some areas. At times, workers cannot provide help because they are busy.

On Sunday afternoon, Ronald Sakolsky from the United States hugged his friend Yin Yuzhen at Ordos International Airport. They had been apart for 26 years.
Yin Yuzhen is a well-known desert-control hero in China. Much of the house was covered by sand in the Mu Us(毛乌素) Desert. Looking at the large yellow sand that might cover their home, she decided to fight against the desert. For more than 40 years, Yin Yuzhen has kept planting trees day after day. She has turned 70,000 acres of sandy land into green land with over 8 million young trees, creating an amazing miracle in northern China. Yin became a National Model Worker(劳模) in 2020.
In 1999, Sacos, whose real name is Ronald Sakolsky, worked as an American history teacher in Luoyang. One day he watched a TV report about Yin Yuzhen’s hard work in the desert. Deeply moved by her courage, he spent three months writing emails to raise money in the United States. Finally, he collected 5,000 dollars and sent all the money to Yin Yuzhen for tree-planting projects. Yin Yuzhen used every cent to buy young trees and planted them carefully in the desert.
After sending the money, Sacos lost touch with Yin Yuzhen. For 26 years, he could not get any news about whether those trees could survive in the terrible desert. However, Yin Yuzhen never forgot the kindness from her American friend. As the forest grew into thick woods, she made a video to look for Sacos so that she could show him the wonderful results of their hard work together.
The two old friends met again in the year 2026. When Sacos saw the large green forest that his money had helped build, he was greatly shocked. He had never expected that his small act of kindness would turn into such a huge success. Their touching story has become a wonderful example of people-to-people friendship between China and America.
24. How does the writer start the text?
A. By listing numbers. B. By asking a question.
C. By making a comparison. D. By describing a scene(场景).
25.Why did Sacos write emails for three months?
A. To collect money for Yin’s tree-planting projects.
B. To look for his old friend Yin Yuzhen online.
C. To share his teaching experience in Luoyang.
D. To invite American friends to visit the desert.
26. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Yin valued Sacos’ help very much.
B. Sacos gave up hope of seeing the trees again.
C. Yin met Sacos as soon as she received the money.
D. Sacos kept in touch with Yin all the time.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The National Model Worker--Yin Yuzhen B. Ways to Solve Environmental Problems.
C. A Green Friendship Across Twenty-Six Years. D. The History of Mu Us Desert.

Hi Yaming,
I learned something amazing today. It’s about solving a real-life problem! Let me share it with you.
The problem:
Li Hua, a 9th-grade student, goes to school (point B) from his house (point A). On his way to school, he walks quickly to the Food Street for his breakfast. Look at the map of his neighborhood. In order not to be late for school, which breakfast house (point P) should he choose along the street (AP+PB) to shorten his total walking distance?
Actually, this is called Heron’s Shortest Path(路径)Problem, named after a Greek math expert who studied light reflection(反射)2,000 years ago! He discovered light always takes the shortest path when reflecting off a mirror. For Li Hua’s problem, the street acts like a “mirror”.
How it works:
①Mirror Trick: Imagine reflecting point A across the street to create a “mirror image”A'. Now, A' is on the opposite side of the street, exactly as far from the street as A.
②The Straight Line between two points is the Shortest Path! Connect A' and B. Where this line crosses the street is the best point P !
Why it works:
—By reflecting A to A', the distance AP+PB becomes A'P+PB (since AP=A'P).
—The straight line A'B is the smallest possible total distance.
Cool, right?
It’s amazing how the math expert from ancient Greece solves a real problem in life! His idea is even used today in GPS systems and building design.
Now, let’s look back at Li Hua’s problem. If both Li Hua’s house (point A) and the school (point B) are 2 km away from the street. And it’s 3 km from Li’s house to the school. What’s the shortest path of AP+PB?
Let me know your answer! I’m looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Adam
28. What does Adam mainly talk about?
A. How the light reflects off the mirror.
B. How to use math to solve real-life problems.
C. How to find breakfast houses quickly.
D. The way to shorten Li Hua’s time to cook breakfast.
29. What does the straight line between A' and B show?
A. The actual path of light.
B. The shortest way for Li Hua to get to another city.
C. The correct location back home.
D. The best choice of a breakfast house for Li Hua.
30. If you were Yaming, what would be your answer?
A. 2 km. B. 3 km. C. 5 km. D. 7 km.
31. Which problem can be solved by Heron’s Shortest Path Problem?
A. B. C. D.
D
A person’s IQ is a measurement of a person’s intelligence. It stands for “intelligence quotient,” the amount or degree of intelligence. IQ tests have been around since the beginning of the 20th century, although people have been trying to measure intelligence for much longer than that.
French psychologist Alfred Binet was one of the first people to come up with what we know as the IQ test. In 1905, he was tasked with creating a tool for measuring which students in school were more likely to do poorly. A new law had been passed in France that made all children go to school. Education leaders wanted to separate out the children who were not as intelligent as the others.
Binet developed a test that would consider two factors: a child’s chronological age (how old a child is) and a child’s mental age (whether a child thinks at, below, or above the level of other children his or her age). He developed questions for specific age groups. If a child could answer questions that older children could answer, that child’s mental age was higher than his or her chronological age. If a child could not answer questions that children his or her own age could answer, then that child’s mental age was lower than his or her chronological age.
Binet did not believe his test fully measured a person’s intelligence. He felt intelligence was something you could not put a number on. He said more research needed to be done. Despite this, an American psychologist at Stanford University read Binet’s work and developed the test further. It became known as the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales(斯坦福-比奈智力量表). This test became one of the most popular IQ tests of the 20th century. The test may be useful, but Alfred Binet was right: intelligence is more than just a number.
32. What does the underlined word psychologist in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. A doctor who treats people with sicknesses and injuries.
B. A person who studies the way people think and feel.
C. A person who works for the government.
D. A person who teaches at a university.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why education leaders wanted to separate French school children.
B. Why some students do more poorly in school than others.
C. Why Alfred Binet became a psychologist.
D. Why Alfred Binet created an IQ test.
34. What factors was Binet’s test based on?
A. Chronological and mental age. B. Family background.
C. Height and weight. D. Personality.
35. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To argue an opinion on IQ tests.
B. To introduce information about IQ tests.
C. To compare different IQ tests.
D. To list the benefits of IQ tests.

When you begin learning English, you probably just want to be able to order a cup of coffee and find the bathroom. But at some point, you probably want to speak English like a native (母语的) speaker. 36 If you don’t know, here is some advice that you can follow.
First of all, make sure you know your grammar. “Bad grammar will hold you back,” Emile Dodds from Leonardo English website says. Here, he tells of the importance of knowing the rules of a language. 37 In fact, sometimes you should do the opposite(相反的) thing! A natural way can be more useful.
Next, when native speakers talk naturally, they often use contractions. Contractions are shortened forms of words, such as “can’t” for “cannot” and “won’t” for “will not”. 38 Although these contractions are not often used in writing, they sound very natural in spoken English.
Then, filler words are necessary too. Filler words are another important part of natural speech. They are little words like “so”, “um”, and “em...”. 39 For example, when you want to invite someone, you might say, “So, I was thinking, um, are you doing anything later?”
40 You can learn by listening to native speakers on the Internet or in movies to hear how they speak. This way, you can pick up useful words and sentences to improve your speaking skills. Keep practicing, and soon you will sound more like a native speaker!
A.They help you to express yourself more clearly.
B.Learning to speak naturally takes time and practice.
C.So how can you make your English speaking sound natural?
D.However, that doesn’t mean you have to speak like the King of England.
E.Native speakers also shorten “going to” to “gonna” or “got to” to “gotta”.
F.They not only sound natural, but also give you time to think about what you’ll say next.

Born in 1895, Lin loved reading and wanted to explore the world at an early age. He first studied in Shanghai, then went to Harvard University to further his studies. Later, he earned his PhD(博士) in Germany. His experiences helped him become a cultural bridge between East and West.
Lin worked hard to spread Chinese culture to the world. In books like My Country and My People, he introduced Chinese ideas and daily life to Western readers. He also wrote novels such as Moment in Peking and A Leaf in the Storm to show how Chinese people went through hard times. He was one of the first Chinese writers to write about China in English.
Besides writing, Lin translated(翻译)many classic Chinese works into easy and beautiful English, such as The Analects of Confucius and Laotzu's Tao Te Ching. He also created a Chinese-English dictionary. This dictionary helped many people learn Chinese and English.
Lin was also an inventor. Chinese characters were hard to type with Western typewriters(打字机)and people couldn't use them anytime and anywhere. So Lin spent years working to design a Chinese typewriter. In 1947, he invented Ming Kwai typewriter and finally solved the problem.
More than just a writer or inventor, Lin Yutang was a true cultural messenger. He used his words and ideas to break down barriers(障碍) between China and the West. His story reminds us that curiosity and openness can build lasting connections across countries.
