We’ve all heard about the man who discovered gravity and the apple that fell from a tree and hit him on the head. However, the 17th-century “aha moment” is actually a bit of a lie! Newton did notice an apple falling from a tree one day and this made him think about what actually caused the apple to fall down to the ground instead of up to the sky.
Newton later developed his theory of Gravity, believing that Earth has a force that pulls objects down, which prevents objects from aimlessly flying here and there.
While we know that Isaac Newton discovered Gravity, he also made many other scientific discoveries. These three laws explain how things move.
Law 1: An object at rest stays at rest. A moving object keeps moving. Objects continue doing what they’re doing unless a stronger force acts on them.
(Here, the stronger force is the wall. It stops the truck but not the boxes, so they keep moving backward.)
Law 2: It takes more force to move a heavy object than to move a lighter object. Newton came up with a scientific formula to explain this:
Force = Mass x Acceleration.
(Large weights with a lot of mass require more force to lift than smaller, lighter weights do.)
Law 3: For every force, there is an equal reaction in the opposite direction.
(Air from an untied balloon rushes out in one direction fast. As the air runs out of the balloon, it pushes the balloon in the opposite direction.)
4. A student looks up “law (/lɔː/ noun)” in the dictionary. ________ is the proper meaning here.
A. the whole system of rules that everyone in a country or society must follow
B. a subject at university
C. a scientific rule that sb has announced to explain a natural process
D. a rule for good behaviour or how you should behave in a certain place or situation
5. The drawing for Law 1 shows that ________.
A. the boxes get a stronger force than the truck
B. the wall acts on the truck but not on the boxes
C. the truck stays at rest, but the boxes do not
D. the truck keeps moving, but the wall stays at rest
6. Which picture best shows Law 3?
A. B. C. D.
7. Which part of a magazine is the reading material most probably taken from?
A. Nature. B. Science. C. Development. D. History.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. B

第一定律的说明文字“Here, the stronger force is the wall. It stops the truck but not the boxes, so they keep moving backward.”,墙只对卡车施加了作用力,不对箱子施加作用力,第二个选项符合原文描述。
C
Students in Denmark take national tests on a computer at different times. According to 4 years’ test results, researchers found something interesting. Students who took the test in the morning scored higher than those who took it in the afternoon.
So what happens? We might have noticed that in the afternoon we become less productive (有效率) and the work we do is of lower quality. A lot of people around the world experience the same thing every day. That’s called the afternoon slump (低迷).
You may wonder why this happens. Our bodies are controlled by our circadian rhythm (昼夜规律), which is like a clock. It tells our bodies when to go to sleep and wake up. Our energy levels change with the circadian rhythm.
We are smarter and more energetic during some parts of the day, while during others, we are less energetic. For example, during the night we experience a large drop in energy, especially between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. However, our energy slowly rises after waking up until it usually reaches a peak in the late morning. But that peak is then followed by an afternoon low, which we call the afternoon slump. The low appears about seven hours after waking up, which is usually from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for most people. This is the time when people make more mistakes during the daytime. When the afternoon slump is over, it rises again. But as our body gets ready for sleep, it slowly drops.
The afternoon slump is natural, but there are some ways to be full of energy again. Stretching (拉伸) for even 20 seconds, taking a break for about 15 minutes, eating a piece of dark chocolate and so on can have a huge influence on your energy levels. Hopefully, you have a better idea about the afternoon slump and what we can do about it.
8. How does the writer support his idea in the third paragraph?
A. By comparing the fact. B. By explaining the reason.
C. By giving an example. D. By listing some numbers.
9. What can we know about the “afternoon slump”?
A. It only happens to students who are in schools.
B. It makes students unable to have important tests.
C. Learning it, students can better plan their time.
D. It’s a sign of some undiscovered health problems.
10. Which picture shows the change of the energy level with time?
A. B.
C. D.
11. What can we infer according to the passage?
A. It can be completely avoided by getting enough sleep.
B. Our energy levels are the highest in the late morning.
C. The afternoon slump is a problem that only students face.
D. Simple actions like eating snacks may help get energy back.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D
【解析】

第三段先指出“You may wonder why this happens?”,后提到“Our bodies are controlled by our circadian...change with the circadian rhythm.”,可知,作者通过解释现象成因支持他的观点。
【9题详解】
第四段“The low appears about seven hours...mistakes during the daytime.”清晰给出人体精力低谷时段,学生掌握该时间规律,就能避开低效时段、更好规划学习时间。
【10题详解】
第四段指出“during the night we experience a large drop in energy, especially between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.”可知,凌晨能量跌至低谷;“our energy slowly rises after waking up until it usually reaches a peak in the late morning”表明上午晚些达到峰值;“But that peak is...for sleep, it slowly drops.”表明午后低迷、短暂回升、睡前缓慢下降。C图曲线完全匹配。
【11题详解】
第五段提到“eating a piece of dark chocolate and so on can have a huge influence on your energy levels.”,可推断简单吃零食有助恢复精力。

Several months after the naming event for the new spacecraft in 2023 had started, over 9,000 submissions (提案) from individuals and organizations in aerospace (航空航天), technology, and culture were received. Finally, experts chose Wangyu and Tansuo as the names of the lunar spacesuit and vehicle.
One’s name matters much in Chinese culture. Parents name their next generations seriously with great hopes and expectations. So do scientists who have been in the national space exploration projects. Names like Yutu (the lunar rover), Tianhe (part of the space station), and Tianwen (the Mars exploration project) have amazed people across the country. And typically, there is deep meaning behind these names. Wangyu and Tansuo are no exception.
According to the official, Wangyu, meaning “Looking into the Universe,” reflects humans’ dream to explore space. It connects with the spacesuits “Feitian (Fly to the Sky)” used in China’s space station missions and expresses China’s new goal of landing on the moon and further exploring space. The name also suggests China’s peaceful use of space and its efforts to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
lunar spacesuit
Tansuo, meaning “Exploration,” includes the spirit of discovery and the drive to explore the unknown. It shows the lunar vehicle’s important role in helping China learn about the moon. The name fits well with China’s space dream of exploring the universe, making more progress in universe exploration, and becoming a space power.
lunar vehicle
By naming the lunar spacesuit “Wangyu” and the lunar vehicle “Tansuo,” China not only shows its great resolution to space exploration but also reflects the smooth progress of the lunar mission. Key technology breakthroughs (突破) have been made, and the program is now entering a new stage. The excitement of 2030 will surely be felt by all.
12. Why does the writer mention Yutu, Tianhe, and Tianwen?
A. To praise the creativity behind naming space projects.
B. To show how Chinese are good at naming things.
C. To compare the names of different space missions.
D. To show how important these projects have been.
13. Which of the following statements is incorrect?
A. Both the lunar spacesuit and vehicle’s names show Chinese spirit of exploration.
B. Two kinds of spacesuits are in service in China.
C. The names of the lunar spacesuit show the new goal of China’s space exploration.
D. Exploring the moon shows China’s spirit of discovery.
14. What does the article talk about China’s space exploration?
A. At present, it focuses mainly on space station missions.
B. It expects to compete with other countries to be the lead.
C. It combines traditional culture with modern technology.
D. Its success in space exploration depends on a long history.
15. Zhao Lingling, a Chinese girl, posted a vlog about this passage on her TikTok. Which keywords may appear in her vlog?
① creative ② brave ③ international work ④ spiritual wealth
A. ①③. B. ①④. C. ②③. D. ②④.

Force = Mass x Acceleration.

D. a rule for good behaviour or how you should behave in a certain place or situation

C. the truck stays at rest, but the boxes do not
D. the truck keeps moving, but the wall stays at rest
6. Which picture best shows Law 3?
A. B. C. D.
7. Which part of a magazine is the reading material most probably taken from?
A. Nature. B. Science. C. Development. D. History.

D. Simple actions like eating snacks may help get energy back.

lunar vehicle

Key technology breakthroughs (突破) have been made, and the program is now entering a new stage. The excitement of 2030 will surely be felt by all.
