B Blue Planet is an amazing series, making the diversity of life in our seas and oceans accessible to all. And Blue Planet II took a critical step by also highlighting the challenges affecting our oceans. One such issue is that of plastic pollution, something I have researched for over 20 years. I have written more scientific papers on the topic than anyone else — but science alone is of limited value unless communicated. That’s especially important with plastic pollution where actions by all of us, in daily life, are needed to make a difference. There has been a marked increase in interest in plastic pollution; some in the field call this ‌“the Blue Planet II effect”. Michael Gove, for example, was apparently drawn by the images of plastic bags in one episode. Images of seabirds eating plastic goods were particularly shocking. A few minutes of coverage by Blue Planet II has done more to raise awareness than the decades of underlying research could ever have done alone. A step change in awareness is one thing, but what’s actually changed since the series went on air in October 2017? In 2018, twice as many volunteers participated in the Great British Beach Clean than the year before, and they reported on average a 16 per cent decrease in the number of items collected. This is a fantastic achievement, but clean-up on its own will not fix the problem. More systemic change is required, and that will take time. Over the last 60 years, we have become accustomed to the convenience of single-use plastics. It has become acceptable for items to be used in an instant, even though the resultant waste persists for decades. In my view, the challenge going forward lies in matching potential solutions to the specific uses of plastic. How and where should we adopt the different strategies — reduce, reuse, recycle, biodegrade, compost? Evidence about the problem is now clear, but evidence about which specific actions to take, and in which circumstances, is far less clear. 4. According to the writer, what is an achievement of Blue Planet II? A. It has given scientists inspirations for their work. B. It has revealed how fast the oceans are shrinking. C. It has aroused people’s interest in plastic pollution. D. It has become one of the most popular TV series globally. 5. The Great British Beach Clean is mentioned in paragraph 3 in order to ________. A. cast doubt on the real effect of clean-up B. suggest a possible solution to ocean pollution C. indicate how much we rely on single-use plastics D. imply that Blue Planet II has brought about change 6. According to the writer, what is a real challenge now? A. Making ‌“the Blue Planet II effect” last longer. B. Collecting more evidence for plastic pollution. C. Dealing with different kinds of plastic properly. D. Communicating the harm of plastic to the public. 7. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Blue Planet II: Did It Have an Impact on Plastic Pollution? B. Blue Planet II: How Did It Win the Hearts of the Public? C. Blue Planet II: How Did We Take Full Advantage of It? D. Blue Planet II: Did It Work Against Science? C Born in 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya, Wangari Maathai spent her childhood in the Kenyan countryside and her young adult life in the United States. She studied biology at Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas, then obtained a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After returning to Kenya and pursuing her PhD at the University of Nairobi, Wangari became the first woman in East Africa to receive a doctor’s degree. In the 1970s Wangari was an active member of the National Council of Women of Kenya. Women came to the council in part to search for solutions to the environmental problems — deforestation and desertification had caused many of the resources women relied on for food and clean water to decrease. Fuelled by her knowledge of biology and her passion for helping others, Wangari decided to take action. Wangari had two goals in mind: to help restore environmental resources and give women the ability to support their families in a self-sufficient, sustainable way. To achieve her goals, she came up with a practical but impactful idea: to plant trees. The trees would reduce the effects of deforestation, in addition to providing food and firewood for local families. Wangari’s plan inspired the formation of the Green Belt Movement in 1977, an organisation dedicated to environmental conservation and poverty reduction in Kenya. As the Green Belt Movement grew, Wangari began to focus on several different but interconnected causes: environmental conservation and human rights. In the late 1980s, she called on her community to oppose the construction of a skyscraper in Uhuru Park, Nairobi’s central public space. In 1999 she led a protest against the privatisation (私有化) of Karura Forest in Nairobi, during which Green Belt Movement members were beaten by private guards. Despite facing ongoing opposition and even danger, Wangari’s belief in her work was never shaken. Wangari served on the boards of countless environmental organisations, and spoke to members of the United Nations. Due to her tireless work Wangari received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. 8. How did Wangari’s knowledge of biology inspire her to take action? A. By providing knowledge for her PhD research. B. By motivating her to start the Green Belt Movement. C. By realizing the environmental problems women faced. D. By helping her come up with the idea of planting trees. 9. What was the main goal of the Green Belt Movement ? A. Privatisation of Karura Forest. B. Improvement of forest plantation. C. Construction and expansion of skyscrapers. D. Environmental protection and poverty relief. 10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The belief Wangari hold. B. The efforts Wangari made. C. The success Wangari achieved. D. The challenges Wangari faced. 11. Which of the following best describes Wangari Maathai? A. Honest and hard-working. B. Patient and unselfish. C. Considerate and generous. D. Determined and inspiring. D Choosing to forget something might take more mental effort than trying to remember it, researchers at the University of Texas discovered. Their findings suggest that in order to forget an unwanted experience, more attention should be focused on it. “Decades of research has shown that we have the ability to forget something out of our own free will, but how our brains do that is still being questioned. Once we can figure out how memories are weakened and think out ways to control this, we can design treatment to help people rid themselves of unwanted memories,” said Jarrod Lewis-Peacock, the study’s senior author. Memories are dynamic constructions of the brain that regularly get updated, adjusted and reorganized through experience. The brain is constantly remembering and forgetting information, and much of this happens automatically during sleep. Their findings not only confirmed that humans have the ability to control what they forget, but also that successful intentional forgetting requires more activity than what is required to remember. “A proper level of brain activity is important to this forgetting mechanism. Too strong, and it will strengthen the memory; too weak, and you won’t change it, ” said Tracy Wang, lead author of the study. “Importantly, it’s the intention to forget that increases the activation of the memory, and when this activation hits the sweet spot at the appropriate level, that’s when it leads to later forgetting of that experience.” The researchers also found that participants were more likely to forget scenes than faces. “We’re learning how these mechanisms in our brain respond to different types of information, and it will take a lot of further research before we understand how to use our ability to forget,” said Lewis-Peacock. “Hopefully, we can find out how we process and get rid of those really strong, sticky emotional memories, which can have a powerful effect on our health and well-being.” 12. What remains a puzzle to researchers? A. How our memories can be strengthened. B. How our brains voluntarily forget something. C. What effect unwanted memories have on our brains. D. Whether our brains can voluntarily forget something. 13. Which of the following can best describe memories? A. Active. B. Lasting. C. Casual. D. Ridiculous. 14. What can we learn from the text? A. It requires less attention to forget than to remember. B. The more active the brain is, the faster it forgets. C. Humans can’t keep memories under control. D. Humans forget faces less easily than scenes. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. What it takes to forget an unwanted experience B. Strong memories have a great influence on health C. Forgetting uses more brain power than remembering D. How to train our brains to voluntarily forget something Touchdown spaces are simple work spaces that may be employed as a replacement for a larger office. ____16____They can also refer to a cubicle (小隔间) in a business setup that provides a place for individuals to work. As we drafted a menu, they asked about my family’s traditions. “We always have a big turkey,” I said, closing my eyes. “Mom bakes it with butter, and it’s so juicy.” “We should cook a turkey together!” Maria said, clapping her hands. Juanita nodded eagerly. “My family never made turkey at Christmas. This will be an adventure!” My heart sank. I’d never roasted a turkey before. Mom always handled it, and I’d survived college on microwave meals. What if I ruined Christmas? “Don’t worry,” Juanita said. “We’ll learn as a team. ” That night, we gathered on the sofa, with laptops open. Maria searched for Latin American spices (香料) , Juanita studied her aunt’s secret sauce (酱料) recipe, and I looked through cooking blogs for roasting tips. We created a detailed to-do list, assigning tasks like shopping, decorating and sauce-making. On the morning of Christmas Eve, our “turkey hunt” began. The first store had only frozen ones, and the fresh turkeys at the second were really expensive. “This is our last chance,” I said, struggling to carry a12-pounder to the register. On the way home, we picked up colorful paper, shining string lights, and extra supplies for side dishes. In the kitchen, memories of Mom making turkey flooded my mind. I could still picture her standing in our kitchen back in Detroit, her hands skillfully moving as she prepared the turkey. I reached for the butter, just like I’d seen her do countless times, and gently spread it under the turkey’s skin. Then, following the steps I’d memorized, I stuffed the turkey with onions, copying the precise way Mom always did. Just as I finished, Maria came over with a small bowl. She surprised us by brushing the turkey with a mixture of orange juice and honey. “My grandma used to do this,” she said. “It’ll make the skin more delicious.” Finally, we placed the turkey into the oven (烤箱) with hopeful smiles and went to get the living room ready for Christmas. However, caught up in decorating the living room, we forgot the timer. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then we carried the turkey to the living room and placed it on the table. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2028届高二10月检测(英语) (考试时间:120分钟 总分:150分) 一、听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题,每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. 8. D 9. D 10. B 11. How to train our brains to voluntarily forget something 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C 20. 【16题详解】 由上文“Touchdown spaces are simple work spaces that may be employed as a replacement for a larger office. (触地空间是简单的工作空间,可以用来代替更大的办公室)”和下文“They can also refer to a cubicle (小隔间) in a business setup that provides a place for individuals to work. Rental agreements can be signed on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. (它们也可以指企业中为个人提供工作场所的隔间。租赁协议可以每天、每周或每月签订)”可知,该空应和上下文一起解释什么是touchdown spaces (触地空间),B选项“它们可以是工作办公室内租来的工作空间。”切合语境。故选B项。 【17题详解】 此空设于段首,是本段主题句。由下文“One cubicle may have a telephone, some type of Internet access, a desk, and a chair. An overhead light may also be provided. In addition, the individual space will be supplied with any other items needed, such as printers, pencils, notepads, and other tools which are common in an office environment. (一个隔间可能有一部电话、某种类型的互联网接入、一张桌子和一把椅子。还可以提供头顶灯。此外,个人空间还将配备所需的任何其他物品,如打印机、铅笔、记事本和其他办公环境中常见的工具)”可知,本段主要讲touchdown spaces (触地空间)包括了工作所需的一些基本要素,下文是对该主题句的具体阐释,D选项“触地空间通常包括做生意所需的一些基本要素。”切合语境。故选D项。 【18题详解】 上文“One ideal customer for a touchdown space is someone who is starting his or her own business and wants a space outside the home for work-related tasks. (触地空间的一个理想客户是正在创业并希望在家外有一个空间来完成与工作相关的任务的人)”和G选项“他们通常手头拮据,租一间小办公室也不现实。”一起引出触地空间对需要家外工作空间、手头拮据的创业者的必要性,G项中的They指代的是上文中的someone,正好衔接下文“However, renting a cubicle is often much less expensive and may include some of the amenities (便利设施) that come along with a rented office space. (然而,租一个隔间通常要便宜得多,而且可能包括一些随租办公空间而来的便利设施)”讲触地空间的益处,切合语境。故选G项。 【19题详解】 由上文“A touchdown space is also taken advantage of by business people who are in town for a short period of time. Rather than working in a hotel room, the visiting business professionals will rent a desk for them during their stay in town. 与上文“Not every city recently offers touchdown spaces as a replacement for larger offices. (并不是每个城市最近都提供触地空间来取代更大的办公室)”形成转折关系,说明虽然不是所有城市都有touchdown spaces,但这一想法正在得到更多的关注。故选A项。 Jerry Goode headed into the woods for a camping trip with his fishing equipment. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 However, caught up in decorating the living room, we forgot the timer. When the smoke alarm went off, the turkey’s skin was slightly blackened. “No!” I panicked, feeling like our first shared Christmas would be ruined. But Maria quickly grabbed a knife, her eyes steady. “We can just cut off the burnt bits and it’ll still be delicious,” she said, cutting them away. Juanita joined in, waving her spicy sauce. “With this, even cardboard would taste great!” Their laughter melted my anxiety. I added herbs and orange slices, turning the turkey into a colorful centerpiece. Then we carried the turkey to the living room and placed it on the table. The plates were already waiting, along with glasses filled with fresh juice. The moment I cut into the turkey, steam rose, revealing tender, butter-kissed meat. Maria poured her honey-orange mixture over the slices, while Juanita’s sauce added a spicy kick. As we passed the turkey plate around, sharing bites and stories, the burnt edges became a source of laughter. The imperfect turkey, born from our combined efforts, tasted like home — a reminder that Christmas isn’t about perfection, but the warmth of shared moments with friends. 词汇激活: 行为类: ①切掉:cut off/trim away ②抓起:grab/snatch 情绪类: ①惊慌失措:panic/freak out ②焦虑:anxiety/worry  【点睛】[高分句型1] When the smoke alarm went off, the turkey’s skin was slightly blackened.
