At college,I got caught up in"magazine journalism."I somehow became a writer
for literary magazines and music blogs, eventually working on screenplays.
But as the years passed,I noticed that the"real"work in my chosen discipline
一
the
kind that could also support a living-was disappearing.I had to take on some"money
jobs":copywriting, celebrity interviews, and brand (strategy. But deep in my heart,
I worried that,in the eyes of my literary peers ()I might appear to lack a certain
degree of integrity.I also feared that doing commercial work might damage my
creativity.
Then I saw a commercial for the Nike Air Jordan XII.It was stylish and cinematic,
and I was immediately drawn to it.Curious,I looked it up and found that it was a
well-known ad called Frozen Moments, directed by Jonathan Glazer, who later won an
Oscar for his serious film The Zone of Interest.
This surprised me.I had always believed that true artists kept their work pure and
separate from commercial influence. But the ad made me question that belief. It reminded
me that an artist's practice doesn't always emerge from a pure art-making world. It often
develops through interaction with the world-including work done for money
entertaining videos,I gained financial stability,so I was able to publish my first serious
pieces in a major magazine.Later,a fashion shoot I worked on at a private lake inspired
me to write a screenplay.Instead of harming my creativity, these jobs enriched my life and
gave me new material to work with.
Then I started rethinking my experience.Maybe"selling out"was part of finding my
way toward the art.I reflected on the times when I felt I had sold out. While working at a
media company writing captions(说明文字)for a food company.
I've come to realize that"selling out"isn't an artistic death. For most of us,it simply
means using our creative talents to earn a living,in order to give ourselves time to make
the art we want to make.
4.How did the author feel about taking on"money jobs"at first?
A.Proud and motivated
B.Uncertain and conflicted
C.Relaxed and optimistic.
D.Unsatisfied and annoyed.
5.What did Frozen Moments mean to the author?
A.A growing trend in advertising
B.An inspiration for his movie.
C.A representation of pure art.
D.A turning point in his view.
6.What benefit did commercial work bring to the author?
A.More personal free time.
B.Wider professional circle.
C.Richer writing resources.
D.Broader public recognition
7.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Doing"Money Jobs":A Key to Success
B.Rethinking"Selling Out":A Path to Art

In 1915 a worried mother from Maine wrote to the United States Children's Bureau
to ask why her son was rejecting a variety of foods.Could it be that he did not like them?
The expert at the agency wholly dismissed that idea and suggested she take him to a
doctor. It must be stomach trouble. After all, voluntary food rejection was
almost
unheard of in America at the time.Children ate what their parents
put in
front of them. They even asked for seconds
Today American children have become"the pickiest eaters in history."Helen Zoe Veit,
an associate professor at Michigan State University, decries changes in the social
environment and adults'attitudes over the past century that"allowed picky eating to take
over American childhood."
Before the 20th century, there was no such thing as"children's food."Youngsters had
wild, boundless appetites. They ate whatever their parents gave them.Besides, children,
like adults, worked up appetites because they used to eat only at meals. The rise of
snacking (resulting in a lack of hunger)is one of the modern causes of children's picky
eating habits at the dinner table.
Another thing to change was the rise of supermarkets and processed foods.By the
mid-1960s,the average American supermarket stored 7,000 items-ten times as many as
in the 1920s.Advertisers began targeting children directly."In the old days, children ate
what their mothers bought;now the kids tell their mothers what to buy, said Ethan
Carter,an advertising executive at Kellogg's,Ms Veit blames adults for treating food
differently from toothbrushing or seat belts.Young children may say they do not want to
brush teeth or wear a seat belt, but adults overrule them because they know best. Why
not so with carrots or fish?To fight picky eating at home, why not feed the whole family
the same meal and continue to introduce a food repeatedly even after a child has rejected
it?
8.What did the expert think of the mother's worry in 1915?
A.It was completely unreasonable.
B.It was caused by poor feeding.
C.It was a sign of changing attitudes
D.It was common among children.
9.What does the underlined word"decries"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Predicts.
B.Denies.
C.Criticizes.
D.Ignores.
10.What results from advertisements according to Ethan Carter?
A.Child-driven family food choices
B.Children's raised awareness of food.
C.The popularity of children's food.
D.Processed food-based family diets
11.What is Ms Veit's advice for parents?

The decline of lions and pandas often captures global attention, but a quieter and
potentially more damaging crisis is unfolding among small mammals(哺乳动物),
These tiny animals are disappearing at alarming rates, and their loss can serve as early
warning signs of ecological damage.Tracking them, however, has long been a
challenge because many species occupy different ecological roles while looking almost
exactly alike.
Researchers have now developed a new way to identify and monitor these animals
by analyzing their footprints. The method was tested on two nearly indistinguishable
species of sengi and achieved accuracy rates as high as 96 percent.
"It's often only possible to distinguish between species using DNA,which can be
slow,invasive(侵入的),and costly,"explained lead author Dr..Zoe Jewell.“Tt's really
important to know which is which, because although these species might look the same,
they face different environmental threats and play different roles in the environment. For
example,in our study, one of the sengis,Eastern Rock sengis, lives in rocky habitats
and the other,Bushveld sengis,on sand, and each can act independently as an indicator
in those environments."
While the two sengi species look alike, their feet are not exactly the same.Slight
differences in foot shape leave distinct patterns in the tracks they make.In light of this,
the researchers carried out fieldwork in South Africa, where sengis were carefully
guided to leave clear tracks in a specially designed footprint collection box.
High-resolution images of these tracks were then analyzed using software.Researchers
focused on identifying the most useful features that could separate the two species.
The results were highly encouraging.By selecting nine key footprint features, the
system was able to correctly identify the species in 94 to 96 percent of cases. This shows
that footprint analysis can offer a simple, affordable, and non-invasive way to confirm
species presence and track changes in their populations and habitats.
The researchers plan to expand this approach to other species and compare it with
other non-invasive monitoring techniques to see how different tools can work together.
12.What problem with small mammals is presented in paragraph 1?
A.Their populations are hard to monitor.
B.Their ecological roles are often ignored
C.They are too tiny to be observed clearly.
D.They are facing serious habitat damage.

A.To compare the features of their footprints.
B.To demonstrate the threats to their survival.
C.To highlight the value of distinguishing them.
D.To explain the need for non-invasive research.
14.Which aspect of the research does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Its purposes.
B.Its findings.
C.Its design.
D.Its significance.
15.What can be expected of the new method?
A.It'll replace DNA testing soon.
B.It'll gain broader applications.
C.It'll achieve higher accuracy
D.It'll become more affordable.

How to Apologize
All of us make mistakes.Mistakes don't have to define you.16 A good
apology can not only fix some of the damage that has been done, but also stop the
relationship from getting worse. Here are some key components to keep in mind.
.Don't add conditions.
When you apologize, you may want to protect yourself by adding conditions.Be
careful with this.17 For example,"I'm sorry I said X,but if you hadn't done Y,I
wouldn't have been so upset"may be true, but it can make the conflict worse and make you
sound less sincere.
.Listen
18
It should also be about the personyou are apologizing to.After all,if you
choose to apologize,it means you know you did something wrong,so their feelings are
just as important as yours.Don't get so caught up in your own words that you forget to
listen to theirs
。19
Some people get stuck in a cycle:hurt each other, apologize, hurt each other,
apologize. This is why even a"good"apology can fall on deaf ears.Words are not enough if
actions don't follow. As the saying goes,"The best apology is changed behavior."So
explain in your apology what you will do to avoid making the same mistake again. This
can give the other person some confidence.20
A.Avoid hurting each other.
B.Make apologies through action.
C.An apology shouldn't just be about you.
D.What matters is how you deal with them
E.In doing so,your apology may lose its meaning
F.A sincere apology can repair a broken relationship.

formally announced that our school would hold a lively campus charity fair to raise money for
poor children in remote villages,I volunteered without hesitation to take charge of the
second-hand book stall.I also actively persuaded nearly ten warm-hearted classmates to
donate their unused books to support my booth.
My thoughtful classmate Lina had kindly reminded me in advance to classify different
kinds of books, mark clear and reasonable prices, and design simple promotional posters to
attract visitors. However,I rudely turned down her sincere advice and even laughed openly at
her for being overly cautious.I gathered large piles of various books, including interesting
storybooks, popular magazines and practical exam reference books.Without any careful
arrangement,I stuffed these mixed books randomly into several rough cardboard boxes.
On the official day of the charity fair, while other groups devoted plenty of time and energy
to decorating their stalls with colorful ribbons and beautiful handwritten signs,I did almost no
preparation at all.I just laid all my books in a total mess on the table and wandered around the
campus casually, firmly convinced that high-quality books alone would naturally draw a large
number of buyers.
As noon slowly rolled around, all the neighboring stalls were packed with busy and
energetic students. In sharp contrast, almost no one stopped or spared a glance at my book
booth.Worse still, several reference books accidentally slipped off the table and got badly
stained by the fruit juice spilled by passing students.
Standing alone beside my cold booth,I watched Lina's handmade toy stall become
extremely popular and listened to their cheerful and merry laughter.Strong regret and great
embarrassment wrapped me tightly.I fully realized that my stupid arrogance and laziness had
wasted my classmates'kind donations.Just as I sank into deep self-blame and despair,Lina
finished her temporary work and walked straight towards me.
