If you drive, please park your car on the roadside and walk down. Call 085-215-9185 or email phuketyachtclub@gmail.com.

Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for more than 30 years near Buffalo, New York, he in computers, she in special education. “Teaching means everything to us,” Tim would say. In April 1998, his wife suffered from an operation on her heart, which leads to some serious thinking about life’s purpose.
Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure depicting Imagination Library, a campaign launched by Dolly Parton’s foundation that mailed a book monthly to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home county. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. Consequently, he stuck the brochure on his wall as a motivational thing.
Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still kept on the wall, Tim clicked on imaginationlibrary.com. The program had been opened up to partners who could devote themselves to the cause.
The quality of the books was a priority to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they packed their bags for Dollywood, the organization by Dolly Parton for a look-see. “We didn’t want to give the children trash,” says Linda. The books, reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members, included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer titles like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series.
Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and work on. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to titles I’ve never heard of.”
The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit on their bottom and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”
4. What inspired Tim’s action to do something for children?
A. Tim’s teaching. B. Linda’s operation.
C. Megan’s encouragement. D. Patron’s foundation.
5. Why did the Richters select the books carefully?
A. To become Imagination Library’s partner. B. To meet the children’s requirement.
C. To guarantee the quality of books. D. To win the praise of board members.
6. What is the attitude of Megan towards the program?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Contradictory.
7. Which of the following best describes Tim?
A. Changeable and creative. B. Generous and reliable.
C. Imaginative and respectable. D. Traditional and helpful.
D 5. C 6. C 7. B
根据第二段“Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure depicting Imagination Library, a campaign launched by Dolly Parton’s foundation that mailed a book monthly to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home county. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. Consequently, he stuck the brochure on his wall as a motivational thing.(手术后不久,蒂姆看到了一本介绍“想象图书馆”的宣传册。这是多莉・帕顿基金会发起的一项活动,每月会给这位歌手家乡县内0到5岁的儿童邮寄一本书。“我想,也许我和琳达退休后也可以做这样的事,”蒂姆回忆道。于是,他把宣传册贴在墙上作为激励自己的东西。)”可知,是多莉・帕顿基金会发起的“想象图书馆”活动启发了蒂姆为孩子们做些事情。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The quality of the books was priority to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they packed their bags for Dollywood, the organization by Dolly Parton for a look-see. “We didn’t want to give the children trash,” says Linda. The books, reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members, included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer titles like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series.(对里克特夫妇来说,书籍的质量是重中之重。
根据倒数第二段中“Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to titles I’ve never heard of.”(四个孩子的母亲梅根·威廉姆斯非常感激:“这个项目给我们介绍了一些我从未听说过的书名。”)”
通读全文,尤其第四段“The quality of the books was priority to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they packed their bags for Dollywood, the organization by Dolly Parton for a look-see. “We didn’t want to give the children trash,” says Linda. The books, reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members, included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer titles like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series.(对里克特夫妇来说,书籍的质量是重中之重。他们没有在网上注册,而是收拾行李去了多莉・帕顿创办的多莉坞参观考察。“我们不想给孩子们送垃圾读物,” 琳达说。这些书每年都会经过教师、识字专家和多莉坞董事会成员的评审,其中包括埃兹拉・杰克・基茨的《下雪天》等经典作品,以及安娜・杜德尼的《羊驼拉玛》系列等较新的作品。)”和最后一段“The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. (里克特夫妇每月花费约400美元,给200个孩子寄书。)”可知,蒂姆和妻子退休后成立基金会,多年来为当地学龄前儿童送书,花费不少金钱和精力,这体现了他们的慷慨;他们注重书籍质量,认真对待这项事业,体现了他们的可靠。故选B。

In a revealing experiment, researchers placed fleas in a glass jar sealed with a lid (盖子). The insects repeatedly jumped toward freedom, striking the unyielding barrier above them. After 72 hours, the scientists removed the lid. Remarkably, the fleas continued to jump — but never again reached the height necessary to escape their transparent (透明的) prison. This phenomenon, known as the flea effect, offers profound insights into human psychology.
Consider the case of a secondary student named Elena. After receiving low marks on two writing assignments, she concluded, “I’m hopeless at composition.” This belief appeared in avoidance: skipping writing practice, dismissing vocabulary building and performing worse on subsequent tasks ultimately. Like the fleas conditioned by the jar’s lid, Elena internalized artificial restrictions that bore little relation to her true capabilities.
Neuroscience suggests that breaking free from such psychological limitations requires a deliberate strategy that includes three phases. Individuals must identify their limiting beliefs, much like Elena eventually acknowledged, “I avoid writing because I fear criticism, not because I lack ability.” The second phase involves systematic desensitization (脱敏疗法) through manageable challenges. Elena started by writing three-sentence journal entries daily — a task too small to spark significant anxiety. Successively, she expanded to paragraphs, then full essays. The final phase celebrates increasing progress; each completed writing session strengthened her growing competence. Within four months, Elena earned her first distinction in English composition.
The journey from self-imprisonment to liberation parallels the fleas’ unrealized potential. Behavioral scientists emphasize that the most solid barriers are often those we construct in our minds. As researcher Dr. Karen Hughes notes, “The ceiling above us exists only until we stretch beyond yesterday’s reach.” Both fleas and humans possess the inborn capacity for extraordinary leaps — if only they dare to rediscover the height of their own potential.
8. What happened to the fleas after the lid was taken away?
A. They escaped from the jar at once.
B. They jumped higher than they used to.
C. They stayed in the jar after repeated tries.
D. They stopped fleeing because of exhaustion.
9. What does the underlined word “dismissing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Accepting. B. Exploring. C. Finishing. D. Ignoring.
10. What words can best describe Elena’s way to pick up writing again?
A. Gradual and steady. B. Skillful and speedy.
C. Painful and slow. D. Easy and undemanding.
11. What can be the best title for the article?
A. How Your Beliefs Shape Your Behaviour
B. How Inner Barriers Restrict Our Potential
C. How Fleas Escape from the Glass Jar
D. What Limits the Jumping Height of Fleas
C 9. D 10. A 11. B
根据第一段“After 72 hours, the scientists removed the lid. Remarkably, the fleas continued to jump — but never again reached the height necessary to escape their transparent (透明的) prison.
根据第三段“Elena started by writing three-sentence journal entries daily — a task too small to spark significant anxiety. Successively, she expanded to paragraphs, then full essays. The final phase celebrates increasing progress; each completed writing session strengthened her growing competence. Within four months, Elena earned her first distinction in English composition.(Elena从每天写三句话的日记开始——这个任务小到不会引发明显的焦虑。之后她逐步拓展到写段落,再到完整的文章。最后一个阶段肯定不断取得的进步,每完成一次写作练习都强化了她日益提升的能力。四个月内,Elena第一次在英语写作中获得了优异成绩)”可推知,Elena重拾写作的方式是循序渐进、稳步推进的。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Behavioral scientists emphasize that the most solid barriers are often those we construct in our minds. As researcher Dr. Karen Hughes notes, “The ceiling above us exists only until we stretch beyond yesterday’s reach.” Both fleas and humans possess the inborn capacity for extraordinary leaps — if only they dare to rediscover the height of their own potential.(行为科学家强调,最牢固的阻碍,往往是我们在心里搭建起来的。正如凯伦・休斯博士所说:“头顶的天花板,只存在于我们还没有超越昨日高度的时候。”跳蚤和人类一样,天生拥有一跃而起的巨大潜能 —— 只要我们敢于重新发掘自己潜力的上限。)”可知,文章借跳蚤实验引出“跳蚤效应”,结合Elena的案例阐明内心的屏障会限制潜能,因此最好的题目是B选项“How Inner Barriers Restrict Our Potential(内心的阻碍如何限制我们的潜能)”。
D
A few days ago, I watched a video of myself talking in perfect Chinese. I’ve been studying the language on and off for only a few years, and I’m far from fluent. But there I was, pronouncing each character just as a native speaker would. “My favorite food is sushi,” I said — wo zui xihuan de shiwu shi shousi.
I created the video using software from a Los Angeles-based artificial-intelligence startup called HeyGen. The technology, which only needs a single selfie and a script to generate deepfake videos of real people “saying” almost anything, is a testament (证明) to the advancements in AI language tools. This got me thinking about the declining interest in language learning with fewer students enrolling in foreign language courses and the decrease of English proficiency among young people in some places.
AI translation, integrated into social media and messaging platforms, seems to be everywhere. Even language-learning apps are using AI-generated content in their marketing. However, language translation is an art rather than a science. Something enormous will be lost in exchange for that convenience. As Anne, a Chinese translator, said, “Building a ladder between widely different languages, such as Chinese and English, is sometimes as difficult as a doctor building a bridge in a patient’s heart.”
Language learning fosters cultural competency, a skill that AI cannot simply copy. Learning a different way to speak, read, and write helps people discover new ways to see the world. No machine can replace such a profoundly human experience. Deborah Cohn, a language professor, emphasizes that language learning is actually about understanding and connecting with different cultures. Instead of abandoning language courses in favor of AI, some educators advocate for emphasizing the intercultural aspects of language learning. Paula Krebs of the MLA points out that even with a “universal translator”, sometimes, the greater meaning of people’s utterance (言辞) remains a mystery.
In essence, while AI language tools offer convenience, they lack the depth and cultural insight that comes from human language learning. The challenge and beauty of learning a language are in understanding the cultural tapestry (织锦) that weaves through words, something AI has yet to achieve.
12. Why does the author give the example in paragraph 1?
A. To inspire reflection on AI language tools.
B. To show the convenience of AI translation tools.
C. To present his success in language learning.
D. To remind readers of deepfake technology risks.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Language translation is far beyond technology.
B. AI translation can fully replace human translators.
C. Language apps play a key role in marketing.
D. Learning a different language is an uphill battle.
14. What is the key benefit of learning a language according to the passage?
A. Better digital literacy. B. Improved translation skills.
C. Deeper cultural confidence. D. Effective intercultural interaction.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI language tools offer convenience.
B. AI facilitates language learning in terms of culture.
C. AI is far from perfect in helping language understanding.
D. AI has achieved success in the development of language learning tools.
A 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据第二段中的“This got me thinking about the declining interest in language learning with fewer students enrolling in foreign language courses and the decrease of English proficiency among young people in some places.(这让我开始思考人们对语言学习兴趣下降的问题,修读外语课程的学生变少,部分地区年轻人英语水平下降)”可知,作者举例子是为了引发人们对AI语言工具的思考。
根据第三段中的“However, language translation is an art rather than a science. Something enormous will be lost in exchange for that convenience.(然而,语言翻译是一门艺术而非科学。人们为了换取那种便利,会失去一些重要的东西)”可知,语言翻译远远不只是技术层面的事情。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Deborah Cohn, a language professor, emphasizes that language learning is actually about understanding and connecting with different cultures.(语言教授黛博拉·科恩强调,语言学习实际上是理解不同文化、并与之建立联系)”可知,学习语言的核心益处是实现有效的跨文化交流。
根据最后一段中的“In essence, while AI language tools offer convenience, they lack the depth and cultural insight that comes from human language learning.(本质上,尽管AI语言工具提供便利,但它们缺少人类语言学习所带来的深度与文化洞察力)”可知,在帮助人们理解语言这件事上,人工智能还远远不够完善。

Travel is far more than sightseeing and taking photographs. It offers us access to cultures totally different from our own. ____16____ However, many tourists limit themselves to popular landmarks without real cultural involvement. They rush from one spot to another, only checking off names on a list instead of connecting with the place.
When travelling to a new destination, control the urge to stick strictly to tourist guidebooks. ____17____ Talk with local residents, wander down ordinary streets and try native food instead of chain-restaurant meals. These unplanned moments often deliver the most authentic experience, which cannot be found in any printed introduction.
____18____ Local customs may seem strange from your own cultural perspective. What is acceptable at home might be considered rude elsewhere. Before your trip, do some research on taboos (禁忌) and basic manners of the region. Simple preparations can help you avoid embarrassing mistakes during your stay.
Keep an open mind even if you encounter practices you cannot fully understand. ____19____ If you judge foreign cultures only by your own values, you will lose the opportunity to learn something new. Travel teaches you to respect diversity rather than approve of everything you see. It helps you realise there is never just one correct way of living.
Finally, bear responsible tourism in mind. ____20____ Avoid damaging ancient relics or disturbing local life. True travel means leaving a place as good as, if not better than, you found it. We should protect natural scenery and keep quiet in residential areas.
A. Pay attention to local customs wherever you travel.
B. It broadens our horizons and shapes our world outlook.
C. You should visit as many famous attractions as possible.
D. Do not let fixed travel schedules trap you in a narrow experience.
E. It is necessary to reject traditions that conflict with your values.
F. You are not expected to agree with every culture you come across.
G. Your behaviour will exert a subtle influence on the places you visit.

Ethan was a hard-working student with a heart full of dreams, but his family’s financial struggles cast a long shadow over his life. His clothes were worn out, and he often had to skip lunch to save money. However, Ethan was determined to change his fate through education.
At school, Ethan was a model student. He would stay up late at night, digging into his textbooks by the weak light of a lamp in his small room. His grades were remarkable, and he participated actively in class discussions, always eager to learn more. Unfortunately, his circumstances made it difficult for him to fully focus on his studies. He worried constantly about how his family would make ends meet.
Mrs. Harper, his English teacher, noticed Ethan’s dilemma. She saw the determination in his eyes and the tiredness that came from his difficult home life. One day, after class, she pulled Ethan aside. “Ethan, I see how hard you’re working. Don’t worry, things will get better,” she said with a warm smile, patting (轻拍) him on the shoulder. Ethan was touched by her kindness but remained doubtful about his future.
As the end-of-year exams approached, Ethan worked even harder. He spent every spare moment in the library, studying until it closed. But then, a new problem arose. His family could not afford the fees for the after-class study materials that were essential for the exams. Ethan was disappointed. He felt like all his hard work was about to go to waste.
One morning, when Ethan arrived at his desk, he found an envelope. Inside were three twenty-dollar bills and a note that read, “For your study materials. Keep up the good work.” According to the handwriting, Ethan was sure it must be Mrs. Harper who had left it for him.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With the money, Ethan bought the necessary books and study guides. From then on, he buried himself in them whenever he had a spare moment. Long after the lights in the room went out, the weak lamp in his small room still cast his shadow on the wall. Finally the results came out — he ranked among the top students and was admitted to a famous university. Holding the admission letter, he rushed to Mrs. Harper and thanked her again and again. “You changed my life,” he said. She smiled, her eyes shining with pride.
Years later, he became a teacher and did something like what Mrs. Harper had done. Standing in front of his own class, Ethan always kept an eye on the students who struggled silently, just as he once had. Whenever he noticed a student from a poor family, he would quietly slip an envelope onto the desk, with some money for study materials and a few words of encouragement. Under his quiet care, many of his students went on to achieve great things, and they never forgot the teacher who had helped them. Seeing their grateful smiles, Ethan came to understand that kindness is like a seed: once planted, it will take root, grow and be passed on from heart to heart.

A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Contradictory.
7. Which of the following best describes Tim?
A. Changeable and creative. B. Generous and reliable.
C. Imaginative and respectable. D. Traditional and helpful.

One morning, when Ethan arrived at his desk, he found an envelope. Inside were three twenty-dollar bills and a note that read, “For your study materials. Keep up the good work.” According to the handwriting, Ethan was sure it must be Mrs. Harper who had left it for him.
