Tourists in Our Own City
For months, I had been dreaming about our family trip to Sanya. I had packed my swimsuit, my sunglasses and three books for the beach. But two days before we left, a strong typhoon (台风) hit the south. All the flights were cancelled.
I was so upset that I didn’t leave my room for the whole afternoon. “Seven days at home,” I thought. “This will be the most boring holiday ever.”
That evening, Dad came in with a map of Ningbo. “Since we can’t go to the beach,” he said, “why don’t we become tourists in our own city?” I didn’t feel like it, but Mum had already made a plan.
The next morning, we took a bus to Cicheng Old Town (慈城古镇). I had lived in Ningbo for fourteen years, but I had never been there. We walked along narrow stone streets and tried rice cakes made by hand. The following days were just as interesting. We rode bikes around Dongqian Lake, visited a museum about the sea, and even cooked dinner together with food from a local market. Dad, who never cooks, made the worst fried rice in the world, and we couldn’t stop laughing.
On the last evening, I looked through the photos on Mum’s phone. There were more smiles in them than in any of our earlier holiday photos. I realised that I hadn’t missed the beach at all.
A good holiday, I’ve learned, doesn’t depend on how far you go. It depends on how you see the places around you — and who you are with.
34. Why didn’t the family go to Sanya?
A. The tickets were too expensive.
B. Bad weather stopped all the flights.
C. Dad had to work during the holiday.
D. The writer was ill.
35. How did the writer’s feelings change during the story?
A. Excited → upset → happy.
B. Upset → excited → bored.
C. Happy → bored → upset.
D. Bored → happy → upset.
36. What does the underlined part “tourists in our own city” mean?
A. Leaving the city as soon as possible.
B. Visiting places in your city like a visitor from far away.
C. Working as guides for other tourists.
D. Staying at home and watching travel shows.
37. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Sanya is the best place for a beach holiday.
B. Dad is the worst cook in the family.
C. A happy holiday depends on how you see things and who you are with.
D. Typhoons often hit the south of China.
(C)
①Pick up a pair of scissors (剪刀) and try cutting paper with your left hand. Is it difficult? If so, you now know how about one in ten people feel every day. They are left-handed.
②Our world is mostly designed for right-handed people. Most scissors, can openers and computer mice are made for the right hand. In many classrooms, the small writing tables on chairs are also on the right side. When left-handed students write in notebooks, their hands often get dirty, because they move across the words they have just written. “I always have blue ink on my hand after a test,” says Ben, a 14-year-old student from London.
③In the past, things were even harder. Many teachers believed that using the left hand was a bad habit, and they made left-handed children write with their right hands. Today, we know that this is not a good idea. Scientists have found that whether we are left-handed or right-handed depends partly on our genes (基因) and partly on our experiences. It is not something children simply choose.
④Being left-handed can also be an advantage. In sports like table tennis, tennis and boxing, left-handed players often do better than you might expect. One reason is simple: most players practise against right-handed players, so they are less used to the way a left-handed player hits the ball.
⑤Since 1976, people around the world have celebrated International Left-Handers Day on 13 August. On this day, some shops sell tools for left-handed people, and many left-handers share their stories online. The message is clear: different doesn’t mean wrong.
38. Why does the writer ask readers to cut paper with their left hands in Paragraph ①?
A. To teach them how to use scissors.
B. To help them feel what left-handed people experience.
C. To find out who is left-handed in the class.
D. To show that left-handed scissors are better.
39. Why do left-handed students often get ink on their hands?
A. They move their hands across what they have just written.
B. Their pens are made for right-handed people.
C. They write faster than other students.
D. Their desks are too small for them.
40. What can we infer from Paragraph ③?
A. Children decide which hand they want to use.
B. Teachers today still make children use their right hands.
C. People’s ideas about left-handedness have changed.
D. Genes have nothing to do with being left-handed.
41. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Use Scissors Safely
B. The History of Table Tennis
C. Why Teachers Are Strict
D. Left-handers: Different, Not Wrong
(D)
Plants can’t walk, run or shout for help. So when an insect starts eating their leaves, what can they do? Quite a lot, it seems. Scientists have found that plants have their own clever ways to “talk”.
In the 1980s, thousands of antelopes (羚羊) died on some farms in South Africa, although there seemed to be enough food. Scientists found that the acacia trees (金合欢树) the antelopes ate had become bitter and even poisonous (有毒的). When an animal starts eating an acacia tree, the tree makes its leaves bitter. It also sends a gas into the air. Nearby trees “smell” the gas and get ready by making their own leaves bitter too — before any animal touches them. In the wild, antelopes can walk on to trees far away, but on the farms they had nowhere else to go.
Some plants even call for help. When caterpillars (毛毛虫) eat corn leaves, the corn plant sends out a special smell. This smell attracts tiny wasps (黄蜂), which lay their eggs inside the caterpillars. In this way, the plant gets help from the insect’s enemy.
What happens under the ground is even more surprising. The roots of many trees are connected by very thin fungi (真菌), like a huge underground internet. Some scientists believe that through this “wood wide web”, older trees can send sugar and water to young trees nearby, especially those growing in the shade. However, other scientists think more research is needed before we can be sure how much trees really “share”.
Of course, plants don’t have mouths or brains like ours. But the more we learn about them, the more we realise that they are not as simple as they look. Next time you walk past a tree, remember: it may be busier than you think!
42. Why did the antelopes on the farms die?
A. There was not enough food on the farms.
B. Wasps attacked them.
C. The leaves became poisonous and they couldn’t move to other trees.
D. The weather was too dry.
43. What does the underlined word “attracts” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. 吸引
B. 赶走
C. 伤害
D. 隐藏
44. What can we learn about the “wood wide web” from Paragraph 4?
A. It is a new kind of internet for scientists.
B. It may help trees share food and water.
C. All scientists agree on how it works.
D. It is made of thin plastic tubes.
45. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To show that plants are smarter than animals.
B. To tell readers how to grow corn.
C. To ask people to stop cutting down trees.
D. To introduce some surprising ways plants communicate.

My Housework Week
Last week, our school held a Housework Week. During the week, I did different kinds of housework at home. I made my bed every morning, did the dishes after dinner and helped my mum sweep the floor.
Before the activity, my room was always in a mess and I seldom helped my parents. Now my room is much tidier than before, and I am more careful with my things. My parents are happier because they feel less tired after work.
I have learned that housework is not just my parents’ job. Everyone in the family should do their share. I suggest that we keep doing some chores every day.

It’s in a mess. M: OK. I’ll do it right after dinner. W: Thanks. And the moving company will come at eight on Saturday morning, so don’t stay up late on Friday.
11–15. Good afternoon, members of the Nature Club. Last Sunday, twenty-four of us visited the city zoo. Our guide, Mr Chen, has worked there for over thirty years. He told us that the oldest animal in the zoo is an elephant. She is fifty-two years old, older than all of your parents! The most popular animals are the red pandas. Many visitors stand in front of them for a long time, because they are so cute. Mr Chen also asked us not to feed the animals, because human food can make them sick. Before we left, we planted three small trees near the bird house. Next month, our club will visit the Botanical Garden to learn about plants that live in water. Please remember to bring a notebook.
