Many people think wisdom means knowing a lot of facts. In fact, wisdom also means knowing how to use what we know. A wise person does not always speak the most or work the fastest. He or she usually observes, thinks and then acts.
Here is a simple example. A boy wanted to get a ball from a deep hole. He tried to reach it with his hand, but the hole was too deep. He wanted to leave. Then he saw some small stones nearby. He put the stones into the hole one by one. The water in the hole rose, and the ball came up. The boy got the ball without climbing into the hole.
The boy’s idea was simple, but he had to stay calm and observe the problem. If he had hurried away, he would not have found the answer. This tells us that a calm mind can help us see possibilities.
Wisdom is useful in study and in daily life. When we cannot understand a question, we can read it again and look for key information. When we have an argument with a friend, we can listen first instead of shouting. When we make a mistake, we can think about the reason and try to do better next time.
- What does wisdom also mean according to the passage?
A. Speaking loudly. B. Working very fast.
C. Using knowledge well. D. Knowing every fact. - Why did the boy put stones into the hole?
A. To hide the ball. B. To make the water rise.
C. To clean the hole. D. To make the hole deeper. - What helped the boy find the answer?
A. A strong body. B. A friend’s help.
C. A calm mind and careful observation. D. A new machine. - What should we do when we cannot understand a question?
A. Give it up immediately. B. Ask nobody for help.
C. Read it again and find key information. D. Shout loudly. - Which of the following is the writer’s opinion?
A. Wisdom is useful only at school.

C. We should stay calm when facing problems.
D. We should speak more than others.
