A
With the development of technology, our city life is becoming more and more “smart”. Here are some great technologies that make our cities “smart”.
Sensors
Sensors are like eyes in every corner of the city. They can see and feel things by collecting data on people and the environment.
Internet of things
It is like the blood vessels (血管) of a city, connecting everything to the internet. Imagine when you are nearly home, and your smart watch can tell your home to turn on the lights. This can become a reality with the internet of things.
5G
5G provides high-speed wireless internet. It is what makes the internet of things possible. The speed of 5G can be up to 10 GB per second. With such a speed, we can download a film in just a few seconds.
Artificial intelligence
AI can also help to deal with data. More importantly, it learns from the data and becomes a smart helper for us. AI can work as a delivery person, a tour guide, or even help design cars and make people’s work safer.
Online maps
Baidu Map and Gaode Map are two typical online maps. They help people find their way from one place to another. Some online maps can update real-time data on cities. With their help, people can find out the busiest road and plan the best route when traveling.
21. Which technology can help tell the direction?
A. Sensors. B. 5G. C. AI. D. Online maps.
22. What can AI be used for according to the text?
①Dealing with data.
②Collecting data.
③Working as a tour guide.
④Helping design cars.
⑤Making people healthier.
A. ①②⑤ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ③④⑤
23. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. Sensors can see and feel things like eyes.
B. You can use your smart watch to turn on your lights out of your home one day.
C. We can download a film in a few seconds with 5G.
D. People can only use Baidu Map to avoid heavy traffic.
B
Computers can do lots of jobs. They can do maths, play music and videos and can also be used for searching information. You can use a computer to write or to buy something online, too.
What do you know about the history of computers?
The first computers were very big. They were the size of a room. They were so big that people couldn’t have them at home. And early computers could only do easy maths. In the 1930s, the computer scientist Alan Turing had the idea for a computer that could be used to program to do a lot of things. His idea made computers do different things.
In 1958, Jack Kilby invented the microchip. It was a totally new thing for people at that time. Microchips are very small but can keep lots of information in a computer. They helped make computers smaller. In the 1970s, computers were smaller and cheaper so people started to use them at home. In the 1980s, computer games were very popular. Lots of people bought computers just to play games.
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, which is a way to organize information on the internet. With its help, now people all over the world can look for and share information on websites.
24. Why didn’t people use the first computers at home?
A. Because they were too big.
B. Because people could do maths themselves.
C. Because people didn’t know how to use them.
D. Because they could only do easy things.
25. When did people begin to use computers at home?
A. In 1958. B. In 1989. C. In the 1970s. D. In the 1980s.
26. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The First Computers B. How to Use Computers
C. What Computers Can Do D. The History of Computers
C
In 1998, a British scientist named Kevin Warwick did an experiment. He put a small microchip into his left arm. He used the microchip to turn on lights, work with his computer, and even start the water for his bath. After only nine days, Warwick took the microchip out of his arm. Nine days isn’t a long time, but it was enough to give the world a very important message: It’s possible to have a microchip in your body.
Many people think that someday we’ll all have microchips. There are all kinds of things that a microchip could do. It could be useful for simple, everyday things. You might not need cash or smart phones because you could use your microchip to buy things.
A microchip might be able to do more important things. For example, it could carry all of your important health information. If you go to the hospital, doctors can read your microchip and learn all of your health history. Some scientists even believe that someday a microchip could help make sick people healthy again.
Many people dislike the idea of a microchip in their body. They have a lot of worries. Is it safe? Could a microchip make you ill? Also, would other people be able to read your microchip and steal (偷窃) your personal information?
People are especially worried about personal freedom. This is probably the biggest reason why so many people disagree with having these microchips. What if your boss (老板) could use your microchip to watch you? Do you want others to know where you are all the time? For most people, the answer is “no”.
Nobody else has microchips in their body yet. We don’t know if this will ever happen. What do you think? Would you like to have a microchip in your body?
27. What did Kevin Warwick do in 1998?

Self-Service Borrowing
Students can borrow books in two ways: use a phone camera to read the code on the book, or use face recognition at a machine. No more waiting in line! The system also sends reminders (提醒) to return books through the school app.

Digital Bookshelves
Screens on the walls show “digital bookshelves”. Click a book cover to read its short introduction or watch a video. This helps students choose books faster.
Reading Data Analysis (分析)
The library system records popular books and suggests new ones based on students’ interests. For example, if some students borrow science fiction stories often, it might recommend a new space story.
