Have you ever seen a painting long enough to cover your whole wall? A thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains is one of China’s greatest art treasures. It was painted about 900 years ago during the Northern Song Dynasty by Wang Ximeng.
Painted on a whole piece of silk, the painting measures over 11 metres from end to end. It shows a beautiful scene of mountains and rivers in China. It also includes quiet images of fishing villages, markets, simple houses, watermills, and bridges. These peaceful scenes come to life with people fishing, rowing boats, and walking.
What makes this painting special is its bright beautiful colors. Wang Ximeng used blues and greens made from minerals. Even after 900 years, the colors are still clear and bright. The mountains look like green jade, and the rivers shine like silks.
The story behind the painting is amazing. Wang Ximeng was only about 18 years old when he painted it. He was a student in the emperor’s art school. The emperor, Huizong, loved art and was even his teacher. To show his thanks to Huizong, the young painter worked hard for months to finish this masterpiece. Sadly, Wang died very young. This is the only surviving work by him.
For centuries, the painting survived wars and passed through the hands of different collectors. People always protected it because they knew it was priceless. Today, it is carefully kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Because light can damage its bright colours, it is seldom shown to the public.

B篇
Most runners choose their routes (路线) based on distance or surface. Some pick smooth roads for steady speed, while others choose hills for a challenging workout. But for Lenny Maughan, running is more than fitness—it is also a way to make art.
Maughan, who calls himself a “human Etch A Sketch”, creates GPS drawings by running through the streets of San Francisco. He got the idea from apps that runners use to record their routes. “When I was a kid, I was known for drawing funny pictures of people. I had a real talent for it,” he said. “I forgot about it until a little over 10 years ago.”
Maughan begins by carefully mapping his design on a paper map of San Francisco. To find the route that works, he often needs to map out several different routes. His goal is to create clear images. Once the route is planned, Maughan runs his “masterpiece”, using a GPS app called Strava to track (追踪) his movement. However, Strava only shows the full image after the run is complete. That means Maughan has to follow his planned route very carefully. One wrong turn can badly influence the artwork. “You can’t see the drawing while you run,” Maughan explained. “So when you finish and finally see it come together, it’s a wonderful feeling.”
Over the past ten years, the San Francisco runner has created more than 50 images, from a simple heart to a lively pig. In February 2025, he spent 10 hours running 40 miles to create a snake in honor of the Lunar New Year. But his most famous creation is a line painting of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, completed in 2019. That image covered almost 29 miles and involved a lot of climbing.
“I like to say my legs are my paintbrush and San Francisco is my canvas,” said Maughan. “I love running and I love art. This is a nice way to combine them both.”
1. The author introduces the main character by ________.
A. comparing the facts B. raising an interest
C. providing background D. explaining a theory
2. How can Maughan successfully create an image from paragraph 3?
a.Follow the planned route carefully. b.Pick out the best route.
c.Map out several different routes. d.Make a wrong turn sometimes.
e.Finish the run and get the full image. f.Enjoy the wonderful feeling.
A. b → c → a → e B. c → b → d → e → f
C. c → b → a → e D. c → b → a → e → f
3. What does the underlined word “canvas” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A place designed for smooth running. B. A material used for painting on.
C. A project combining running and art. D. A tool recording natural beauty.
4. What is Maughan’s best-known GPS artwork?
A. B.
C. D.
【答案】1. C 2. C 3. B 4. C
(2)题: 第三段详细说明了创作步骤:“he often needs to map out several different routes”,首先规划多条不同路线(c),“To find the route that works”,然后选出最佳路线(b),“Maughan has to follow his planned route very carefully”,接着严格按照规划路线跑步(a),“Strava only shows the full image after the run is complete”,最后完成跑步并得到完整图像(e)。
(3)题: 最后一段中,Maughan说“my legs are my paintbrush and San Francisco is my canvas”,结合上下文,这里的canvas是比喻用法,指代创作的载体(旧金山这座城市)。
(4)题: 第四段明确指出:“But his most famous creation is a line painting of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, completed in 2019.”,因此Maughan最著名的GPS艺术作品是弗里达·卡罗的头像线条画。

A Gentle Reminder of ChildhoodWhen you step on a piece of bread, it turns into a pair of soft shoes. When you hit a ball, it breaks into a whole world of stars. Ancho’s works are playful, heartwarming, and full of surprises and childlike imagination.
There is Beauty in DarknessEver seen a painting that tells two different stories? Crisco’s works do exactly that. With the lights on, you see a calm, simple picture. Someone or future you will help get it back. It just takes time.

A Gentle Reminder of ChildhoodWhen you step on a piece of bread, it turns into a pair of soft shoes. When you hit a ball, it breaks into a whole world of stars. When you see the light in the night sky, it isn’t always the moon. It’s just a step for a cat walking in the air. These magic moments come from Ancho, a cartoon artist. Ancho’s works are playful, heartwarming, and full of surprises and childlike imagination.
There is Beauty in DarknessEver seen a painting that tells two different stories? Crisco’s works do exactly that. With the lights on, you see a calm, simple picture. Turn the lights off, and a whole new story appears. Take The Red Balloon as an example. It tells us that: We lose something when we’re young. But don’t worry. Someone or future you will help get it back. It just takes time.
