19. go 20. show

When I was young, I didn’t like to spend too much time with my parents. For me, they used to be too strict with me and cared about me too much, which made me uncomfortable. Instead, I used to spend more time with other people who have something in common. We had the same interest or the same topic to talk about. As time goes by, I am an adult now. I begin to understand my parents and treat my child the way they did to me when I was young. I prefer to stay with them or talk with them rather than go out with friends hanging out on the street. I realize that I am well protected by my parents and I need to show my love and respect for them in return.

A
①
Mrs Li is over 70 years old. She has lived in Beijing all her life. A reporter interviewed her yesterday. The following are their questions and answers.
②
Reporter: What was your life like in the past?
③
Mrs Li: My family lived in a tiny house. My father was a cleaner, and he often worked twelve hours a day outside in the winter cold or in the summer heat. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She was a kind and loving mother. She didn’t go out to work. There were five children in my family, and looking after us was more than a full-time job.
④
The food we ate was simple. We could only eat meat once or twice a year. I wasn’t sent to school because my family couldn’t afford it.
⑤
Reporter: How has life changed?
⑥
Mrs Li: Families are smaller than they were in the past. The role of women has changed too. My daughter is really lucky. She has a good education. I’m happy that she can go to work even after getting married, but sometimes I feel lonely because she can’t come to see me often.
⑦
Transport and travel are easier today. When I was young, I went everywhere on foot or sometimes by bike. Now you can take the bus, the underground or a plane to travel. What I don’t like is that there’s so much more traffic. It’s so difficult to cross the road. And, of course, we have televisions today and I really enjoy watching TV. But I hate some of the shows because they are too noisy for me.
⑧
Generally speaking, I think life is better today. We eat better and we live longer.
根据语篇内容,选择最佳答案。

One day in 2006, students at Xavier High School in New York wrote to their favourite writers. They invited the writers to visit the school. Some students wrote to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (1922~2007), a humorous American writer. Here is Vonnegut’s reply.
Dear Xavier High School,
Thanks for your kind letters! You really know how to cheer up an 84-year-old man in his sunset years. I don’t make public appearances anymore because I look just like an iguana (鬣蜥) now.
What I want to tell you is simple: Practice any kind of art—music, acting, poetry and so on. No matter how well or badly you do it, don’t do it for money or fame (名声). Do it to grow, find out what’s in your heart, and make your spirit stronger.
Take it seriously! Start right now and keep doing art for the rest of your life. Draw a funny or nice picture of your teacher and share it. Dance home after school, and you can even sing in the shower.
Here’s your assignment for tonight—I hope your teacher will not let you pass if you don’t do it: Write a six-line poem with similar ending sounds about anything. Try your best, but don’t tell anyone about it or show it to anyone. Then tear (撕) it into small pieces and throw them into different bins. You’ll find this effort is your best reward (回报)—you’ve experienced becoming, learned a lot more about yourself, and enriched your mind.
Good luck to you all!
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Everyone has family photos. They tell us how far we’ve come and the strong connection that holds us together. They also create a clear timeline to see the growth and changes in society and in our families.
As for me, one of the photos is of my grandparents. It was a family photo taken at their wedding (婚礼). In the photo, the couple were standing in the middle. My grandpa was a farmer. He often told us that he went through hard times. At that time, technology was not as advanced as it is today. So they could only use oxen (牛) to help with farming most of the time. He often taught us to value food.
Time went by quickly. It was time for my father to get married. The whole family took a family photo during the Spring Festival. At that time, more and more electronic products appeared in people’s daily lives.
The third photo is of me. It was taken last year. Nowadays, online payments are quite popular. We seldom use cash (现金) in China now, as a phone can solve most problems. Besides, many robots and AI technologies have appeared in our lives. There are small robots that can help us with housework.
Besides the hope for a brighter future, these photos show the development of the country and society.

Confucius’s Learning Spirit
Confucius is known as the greatest educator in Chinese history. His learning spirit has inspired people for thousands of years.
At the age of 15, Confucius made up his mind to study hard. He got down to learning various subjects, including music, maths and literature. When he was in the State of Qi, he learned Shao music. He was so lost in it that he didn’t notice the taste of meat for months. This shows his deep love for learning.
Confucius believed in lifelong learning. Even when he became a famous master, he never stopped learning from others. He said, “When I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teachers.” He taught his students to be honest in learning. For example, he told Zilu, “To know what you know and what you do not know, that is wisdom.”
Another important idea from Confucius is “Review the old knowledge and you will have new ideas.” He thought reviewing could help people get deeper understanding.
Today, we can still learn from Confucius’s spirit. We should be hard-working, honest and open to learning from others.
