Ever heard of the words “one man's waste is another man's treasure? ” Nabeel Alam has taken that idea to a whole new level.
He and 26 other high school students from Durham, east of Toronto, Canada, started a company that turns unused clothes into practical reusable bags.
Nabeel said the clothing they use is in good condition, but is being thrown away because it's no longer useful or it' s out of style. By repurposing clothes(given by family and friends) heading for the garbage dump(垃圾场),Nabeel can work toward achieving his goal: cutting down on textile(纺织品)waste in Canada. "We give it a new purpose, "said Nabeel, the company' s president.
How does the company work? The students take the clothes and put them in the wash. Then a team member cuts the clothes to match a pre-drawn outline. After that, the bags are sewn(缝制)together by a sewer who volunteers to help the company.
The team puts pictures of them on their website and Instagram so people can buy them for between $8 and $12. Nabeel said the goal of the company named Vivlio Amet—is to let people know how much textile waste leads to climate(气候)change.
But Vivlio Amet will only last for a little while longer. That’s because Vivlio Amet started in October 2019 as an 18-week Junior Achievement Program project. Through the program, volunteer advisers team up with students to help them start a temporary business from the ground up.
Though the program is completely separate from school, Nabeel said it doesn't feel like extra work. “I don’t treat it like a task. It’s something I like a lot,” Nabeel said. “If you want to be successful you need to work really hard at it.”
4. What does Vivlio Amet do?
A. It rans a garbage dump.
B. It sells reusable old clothes.
C. It makes bags with old clothes.
D. It collects unused clothes for factories.
5. According to Nabeel, what is the purpose of Vivlio Amet?
A. To make pocket money for him.
B. To try his luck at running a company.
C. To call on people to avoid textile waste.
D. To set a good example for his classmates.
6. What does the underlined word “temporary” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. School-based. B. Short-lived.
C. Privately-owned. D. Half-finished.
7. How did Nabeel feel about his work for the program?
A. It was tiring. B. It was pioneering.
C. It was quite difficult. D. It was very enjoyable.
C
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
8. Which of the following represents a fixed mindset?
A. I’m at the starting point of my potential. B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time. D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
9. What might the author encourage parents to do?
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
10. What is the third weapon mainly about?
A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills.
11. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The fixed mindset they have. B. The value of friendship.
C. The feeling that they have control over relationship. D. The feeling that they become helpless.
D
I was sitting at a table, eating a chicken salad sandwich. I wasn’t really hungry but I was supposed to sit a bit and eat something to refill my strength before heading home. I had left early to be the first in line at a blood drive which was being held 15 miles away from my home. I knew that the changes because of something unusual would make the donation process even longer than it was before and I was right. I stood at the door and had my temperature checked even before going into the room. Once I was admitted, it was checked a second time along with my pulse, blood pressure and iron level. Then I had to answer a long list of questions, making sure I had never been anywhere or done anything so I would be safe to donate blood.
Thankfully, it all went well and I was soon lying on a table with a needle in my arm and my blood quietly flowing into a pint-sized bag. I chatted and joked with the lady drawing my blood. They had almost 50 people scheduled to donate blood that day and were happy to do it because each pint of blood could be saving a life.
I took another bite of my sandwich, drank some water, and looked down at the paper lying next to me. On it was a date that was 56 days from then. It was the first day I would be able to donate blood again.
Every pint of blood we donate can save a life. Every smile we share can uplift a heart. Every kind word we say can brighten a day. Every act of kindness we do can make this world a better place. Fill all your days with love then.
12. What did the writer expect before leaving his home?
A. It would take little time to donate blood. B. More people would come to donate blood.
C. He might be hungry after donating blood. D. The process of donating blood would be longer.
13. When would the writer be able to donate blood again?
A. Fifty-six days from the day on. B. After eating the chicken salad sandwich.
C. After drinking a bottle of water. D. After having a rest for two hours.
14. What did the writer want to tell us in the text?
A. Make the world a safer place. B. Share your love with others.
C. Spend your days in a happy way. D. Listen to kind words every day.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Way of Saving a Life B. An Act of Kindness C. A Pint of Blood D. A Memorable Experience

根据前文“That’s because Vivlio Amet started in October 2019 as an 18-week Junior Achievement Program project.(这是因为Vivlio Amet于2019年10月启动,是一个为期18周的青少年成就项目。)”

B 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第二段“People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak.(那些拥有固定型思维模式的人认为,自己天生就是强者或者弱者)”可知,固定思维倾向是把人的能力归为与生俱来的。
根据第三段“The second weapon is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades.(第二种“武器”是保持健康的饮食习惯。研究表明,那些饮食营养均衡、每天锻炼60分钟的学生在上学期间会更加专注,学业成绩和成绩也会有所提高)”可知,作者认为健康均衡的饮食很重要,可以帮助孩子们改善学习表现。因此,作者会鼓励家长为他们的孩子准备健康的食物。故选A项。
根据第三段“This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.(最后这一“秘密”策略就是不要把时间安排得过满。要确保学生们懂得如何制定切实可行的计划,以及如何拒绝那些对他们而言不重要的任务和活动)”可知,第三个武器主要是培养时间管理技能,合理安排时间。故选D项。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school(很多学生从小学和中学就认识了。他们在自己的“舒适区”,感觉自己对自己的关系有一种控制感和期待。但是到了高中的第一天……)”和下文“will all change (一切都会改变)”可知,此处先描述学生们待在“舒适区”的感觉,再提到高中的第一天意味着改变。由此可知,that指代的是前面描述的那种他们能控制人际关系的感觉。故选C项。

根据全文内容,并结合最后一段“Every pint of blood we donate can save a life. Every smile we share can uplift a heart. Every kind word we say can brighten a day. Every act of kindness we do can make this world a better place. Fill all your days with love then.(我们捐出的每一品脱血都能拯救一条生命。我们分享的每一个微笑都能温暖一颗心。我们说的每一句善意的话语都能照亮一天。我们做的每一个善举都能让这个世界变得更美好。那就用爱填满你的每一天吧。)”可知,作者想告诉我们要与他人分享爱、传递善意。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。全文围绕作者一次献血的经历展开,并由此升华到“每一个善举都能让世界更好”,核心是一次善意的行动。B项“An Act of Kindness(一次善举)”最能概括文章主旨。

Dear Lucy,
How are you going these days? I heard that you are having trouble getting along with your parents. Take it easy — such conflicts are really common for teenagers, so don’t feel upset.
Here are some practical suggestions. First, communicate with them openly, which can remove misunderstandings between you. Besides, try to put yourself in their shoes, because their advice comes from deep love and they only want you to grow up safely. What’s more, spare some time to do small things together, and it will warm your family bond.
I hope my advice will be helpful. Wish you a harmonious relationship with your parents.
