Each year, millions of people make use of the New York Public Library (NYPL). Any person who lives, works, attends school, or pays taxes in New York State is allowed to have a free library card. Others, such as visitors from abroad, may get only a visitor card on site. Paper application forms can also be downloaded from the library’s website.
New York State applicants simply complete the online application. The library then tries to check their location online, and the result decides which card they receive at first. The flowchart below shows how the process works.
A digital card does not provide access to Culture Pass. To validate a temporary account and borrow physical books, applicants must visit any branch. Children under 13 need a parent or guardian to complete and sign their applications. All cards for New York Metro users expire every three years and must be renewed in person with proof of identity and home address.
All materials borrowed must be returned on or before the due date. The Library offers a return-anywhere service — most circulating material for borrowing can be returned to any New York Public Library branch location in the Bronx, Manhattan or Staten Island. However, circulating books cannot be returned to the Schomburg Center or the Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street. Likewise, pickup of holds and payment of fees may take place at any Library location with the exception of Schomburg and the Schwarzman Building.
1. What does a London tourist need to do to get a visitor card?
A. Complete the online application first.
B. Bring proof of educational resources.
C. Register in person with proof of address and photo ID
D. Submit an online form and collect the card at a branch.
2. What can be learnt from the third paragraph?
A. Users may mail to renew 3-year cards.
B. Digital cards are valid for Culture Pass use.
C. Readers can borrow books after online checks.
D. Youngsters under 13 need adults’ help for applications.
3. What is the text mainly intended to do?
A. To explain card application rules.
B. To show online library service steps.
C. To clarify book return requirements.
D. To introduce different library cards types.

Exactly at twenty minutes to four the next afternoon Timothy and Nancy drove off in the open carriage to meet the expected guest.
Timothy was Old Tom’s son. It was sometimes said in the town that if Old Tom was Miss Polly’s right-hand man, Timothy was her left. Timothy was a good-natured youth, and a good-looking one, as well. Although Nancy had only been at the house for a short time, the two were already good friends.
Today, however, Nancy was too full of her task to be her usual talkative self; and almost in silence she took the drive to the station and got off to wait for the train. She had even brought a little blanket and some candies for the child. Over and over in her mind she was saying it “Light hair, red-checked dress, straw hat.” Over and over again she was wondering just what sort of child this Pollyanna was, anyway.
“I hope, for her own good, that she’s quiet and sensible, and does not drop knives or bang doors,” she sighed to Timothy, who had walked slowly up to her.
“Well, if she isn’t, nobody knows what’ll happen to the rest of us,” laughed Timothy. “Imagine Miss Polly and a NOISY kid! Goodness! There goes the train whistle now!”
“Oh, Timothy, I… I think…” chattered the suddenly frightened Nancy, as she turned and hurried to a point where she could best watch the passengers get off at the little station.
It was not long before Nancy saw her — the slim little girl in the red-checked dress with two thick pigtails of light golden hair hanging down her back. Beneath the straw hat, an eager, freckled little face turned to the right and to the left, searching for someone. Nancy knew the child at once, but for some time she could not control her shaking knees enough to go to her. The little girl was standing quite by herself when Nancy finally did approach her.
4. What information about the guest was known before the meeting?
A. Hobby. B. Figure.
C. Appearance. D. Personality.
5. What can be inferred from what Timothy said?
A. He regarded the situation amusing.
B. He was annoyed by Miss Polly’s decision.
C. He feared that the child might cause trouble.
D. He was confident about dealing with the kid.
6. What can be learned from the text?
A. Pollyanna was a naughty child.
B. Timothy was helpful to Miss Polly.
C. Old Tom drove Nancy to the station.
D. Miss Polly welcomed noisy children.
7. Which words can best describe Nancy on this occasion?
A. Strict but confident.
B. Anxious but caring.
C. Careless but humorous.
D. Talkative but impatient.
C 5. A 6. B 7. B

Nations with large amounts of wind and solar in their power grids (电网) are easily affected by rapidly-rising energy bills due to sharp increases in the gas price. The relationship between decarbonisation and price swings has been a controversial issue as governments consider clean energy strategies, but an analysis of power prices in Europe has now provided evidence to inform the debate.
Vast quantities of wind and solar capacity have been built across Europe in recent years. But these power sources are intermittent, generating electricity only when the wind blows or the sky is cloudless.
Gas power plants, which can be switched on and off relatively easily, are frequently relied on to provide power when renewable generation is low. But gas is often the most expensive source of power, and electricity market rules mean the most expensive generator sets the price for the entire market.
Raúl Bajo-Buenestado at the University of Navarra in Spain and his colleagues found nations with more wind and solar in their power systems were more vulnerable (易受影响的) to natural gas price shocks. Spain, for example, has large volumes of solar power and is particularly sensitive to power price changes. “If you have natural gas, wind and solar, this is going to make the perfect cocktail for you to be vulnerable,” says Bajo-Buenestado.
It is the need for flexible generation alongside wind and solar that is the issue. Bajo-Buenestado points out that other nations with low-carbon power grids, such as Norway and France, rely on hydropower and nuclear technology, which are reliable generators. “We don’t see a clear correlation between decarbonisation and sensitivity to natural gas price changes,” he says.
Solving the problem will require nations to replace gas as the back-up fuel of choice. One answer is for grid operators to push the power system to become better able to absorb peaks and valleys in generation. “The underlying message is that getting a flexible system is now as important as building renewables,” says Michael Grubb at University College London.
8. What does the underlined word “intermittent” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Irregular. B. Inefficient.
C. Irresistible. D. Inexpensive.
9. What is Bajo-Buenestado’s “the perfect cocktail”?
A. A policy hard to justify.
B. A plan for lower electricity prices.
C. A temporary gas shortage.
D. A power mix easily hit by gas price shocks.
10. Why does the author mention Norway and France?
A. To urge a shift to hydro and nuclear power.
B. To compare their power grids with those of Spain.
C. To demonstrate why gas is such an expensive fuel.
D. To show low-carbon grids not necessarily gas-price sensitive.
11. What message does the author intend to convey?
A. Hydropower and nuclear power should take over gas.
B. More gas plants are needed to balance renewable output.
C. Greater grid adaptability is needed to reduce gas as back-up.
D. Building a flexible grid matters more than expanding renewables.
A 9. D 10. D 11. C
根据第二段划线单词句中“But these power sources are intermittent, generating electricity only when the wind blows or the sky is cloudless.(然而,这些能源来源intermittent,只能在刮风或天空无云时发电。)”
根据第四段“Raúl Bajo-Buenestado at the University of Navarra in Spain and his colleagues found nations with more wind and solar in their power systems were more vulnerable (易受影响的) to natural gas price shocks. Spain, for example, has large volumes of solar power and is particularly sensitive to power price changes. “If you have natural gas, wind and solar, this is going to make the perfect cocktail for you to be vulnerable,” says Bajo-Buenestado.(西班牙纳瓦拉大学的劳尔·巴约-布恩埃斯塔德及其同事发现,电网中风能和太阳能资源更丰富的国家,更容易受到天然气价格冲击的影响。
根据第五段“It is the need for flexible generation alongside wind and solar that is the issue. Bajo-Buenestado points out that other nations with low-carbon power grids, such as Norway and France, rely on hydropower and nuclear technology, which are reliable generators. “We don’t see a clear correlation between decarbonisation and sensitivity to natural gas price changes,” he says.(问题在于,风电和太阳能之外,还需要灵活的发电方式。巴约-布恩埃斯塔德指出,挪威和法国等低碳电网国家则依赖水电和核能技术,这些发电方式更为可靠。“我们并未发现脱碳与对天然气价格波动敏感度之间存在明确关联,”他说道。)”可推知,作者提到挪威和法国为了证明低碳电网并不一定会对天然气价格敏感,关键在于调峰电源的类型。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,并结合最后一段“Solving the problem will require nations to replace gas as the back-up fuel of choice. One answer is for grid operators to push the power system to become better able to absorb peaks and valleys in generation. “The underlying message is that getting a flexible system is now as important as building renewables,” says Michael Grubb at University College London.(要解决这一问题,各国需要寻找替代能源,取代当前作为首选备用燃料的天然气。其中一个方案是,让电网运营商推动电力系统更有效地吸收发电高峰和低谷。伦敦大学学院的迈克尔·格鲁布表示:“核心信息是,建立灵活的电力系统现在和建设可再生能源一样重要。”)”可知,文章传递的信息是:提升电力系统消纳发电峰谷的能力,即增强电网灵活性,减少对天然气备用的依赖。

Since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, millions of people have started using large language models (LLMs) to access knowledge. And it’s easy to understand their appeal: Ask a question, get a polished synthesis (合成), and move on — it feels like effortless learning. However, this ease may come at a cost: When people rely on LLMs to synthesize information on a topic for them, they tend to develop shallower knowledge about it compared to learning through a traditional search engine.
Co-author Jin Ho Yun and I reported this in a paper based on seven studies with over 10,000 participants. Participants were asked to learn about a topic like how to grow a vegetable garden and were randomly assigned to do so by using either an LLM like ChatGPT or the “old-fashioned way”, by using a traditional search engine like Google. Once they completed their research, they were then asked to write advice to a friend on the topic based on what they learned.
The results revealed that people who learned about a topic through LLMs rather than a web search felt that they learned less, invested less effort in writing their advice, and ultimately wrote advice that was shorter, less factual, and more general. In turn, when this advice was presented to their friends who were unaware of which tool had been used, they found the advice to be less informative, less helpful, and they were less likely to adopt it. This may be because traditional search requires active engagement, while LLMs make learning more passive.
To be clear, we do not believe the solution is to avoid using LLMs, especially given the undeniable benefits they offer in many contexts. Rather, our message is that people simply need to become smarter or more strategic users of LLMs — which starts by understanding where LLMs are helpful and where they are harmful to their goals.
In my future research, I plan to study AI tools that could most successfully motivate users to actively learn more. Such tools would seem particularly critical in secondary education, where a major challenge for educators is how best to equip students to develop foundational reading, writing, and math skills while also preparing for a real world where LLMs are likely to be an essential part of their daily lives.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By listing reasons. B. By providing statistics.
C. By presenting a contrast. D. By sharing a personal experience.
13. What can be learned from the seven studies?
A. Advice from LLM users was less specific.
B. Readers’ responses were based on the tool used.
C. Search-engine users were confident of their answers.
D. Participants were grouped by background knowledge.
14. What does the author plan to do in the future?
A. To improve the accuracy of AI-generated syntheses.
B. To explore how AI tools can encourage active learning.
C. To prevent students from LLMs in secondary education.
D. To make LLMs more efficient for quick factual answers.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Learning with LLMs Falls Short
B. LLM Synthesis is a Mixed Blessing
C. AI Use Calls for Smarter Search Engines
D. Traditional Search Tools Make a Comeback
C 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据第一段“And it’s easy to understand their appeal: Ask a question, get a polished synthesis (合成), and move on — it feels like effortless learning. However, this ease may come at a cost: When people rely on LLMs to synthesize information on a topic for them, they tend to develop shallower knowledge about it compared to learning through a traditional search engine. (它们的吸引力不难理解:提出问题,就能得到精炼的整合内容,然后继续推进——这仿佛是毫不费力的学习。然而这种便捷是有代价的:当人们依靠大语言模型为自己整合某一主题的信息,和使用传统搜索引擎学习相比,他们掌握的知识往往更浅薄)”可知,作者将大语言模型学习的便捷优势与存在的弊端进行对比,以此引出话题。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The results revealed that people who learned about a topic through LLMs rather than a web search felt that they learned less, invested less effort in writing their advice, and ultimately wrote advice that was shorter, less factual, and more general. (结果显示,通过大语言模型而不是网页搜索学习某一主题的人,会觉得自己学到的东西更少,在撰写建议时投入的精力更少,最终写出的建议也更简短、事实性更弱、更加笼统。)”可知,more general(更加笼统)对应less specific(不够具体),说明大语言模型使用者给出的建议不够具体。
根据第五段“In my future research, I plan to study AI tools that could most successfully motivate users to actively learn more. (在我未来的研究中,我计划研究能够最有效激励用户进行更多主动学习的人工智能工具)”可知,作者计划探究AI工具如何鼓励人们主动学习。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“However, this ease may come at a cost: When people rely on LLMs to synthesize information on a topic for them, they tend to develop shallower knowledge about it compared to learning through a traditional search engine.

The summer before junior year, I got my first real job at Miller’s, the old bakery on our street. The school required us to complete a social practice project for credit, and I had put it off until the last minute. My mother laughed at my application: I was the kid who burned instant noodles. But Mr. Miller hired me anyway, and my training began: wash the cups as you go and keep them stacked within reach; never trust your memory — write every order down; and smile even when your hands are shaking. It sounded easy enough. I figured anyone could smile and hand over a bag of bread.
Dana had worked at Miller’s for four years and knew every regular by order. “Sundays are the test,” she warned me. “The crowd comes at eight. They are hungry, and they are fast.”
My first two Sundays went well enough with Dana beside me. Then, one Sunday in August, it happened. Dana was steaming milk when the machine spit. The burn crossed her palm, red and swelling. Mr. Miller drove her to the clinic himself, pausing only to point at me. “You’re in charge,” he said, which I thought was a joke. I even laughed. I had no idea how quickly the joke would end.
The line was already out the door. A woman in a blue coat, one of the regulars, was studying the doughnut case; behind her waited a father with three restless children; behind them, the queue folded back on itself. I tied my apron tighter, and took my first order.
It went wrong almost immediately. The father asked for hot chocolate, and we were out of cups. I gave a man a dozen bagels (贝果) when he had asked for six. Then I charged the wrong customer for the wrong pastry, and the line behind him only grew longer. Every eye in the line was on me, patient the way people are patient with a sinking ship. I could feel my face burning as I stammered apology after apology, my voice shrinking with every word. My hands trembled over the register, and for one horrible moment, I forgot every price, every button, every order Dana had ever taught me.

I was serving the last customer with a smile when Mr. Miller and Dana returned.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Take your time. It’s okay to make mistakes at first.” the woman in blue comforted. Her warm words pulled me out of panic. She offered to help me jot down orders clearly, while other customers also expressed understanding instead of complaining. Inspired by their kindness, I took a deep breath to calm my racing nerves. I slowed down, double-checked each order and corrected my former faults one by one. Though my hands still shook slightly at times, I kept a gentle smile and responded to every customer patiently. Slowly but surely, the long queue moved forward.
I was serving the last customer with a smile when Mr. Miller and Dana returned. Shocked to find no waiting customers, they listened carefully to my story. Mr. Miller praised me for staying composed amid chaos, and Dana smiled proudly at me. That tough Sunday turned out to be a precious lesson. This job was more than just a social practice requirement. It taught me that grace under pressure and the kindness from strangers can light our way through unexpected difficulties.

D
