Why don’t many homes have air conditioning? One reason is that many buildings are old in Europe. In the UK, some houses were built before 1900. In those days, summers were cool, so people did not need air conditioning.

Another reason is the rules to protect old buildings. In Paris, people cannot put air conditioning units on the outside of buildings, because these units will destroy the city’s beautiful look.

High electricity prices are also a reason. In Belgium, people spend a lot of money buying electricity. Many people also worry about using air conditioning, because most electricity comes from fossil fuels (化石燃料), and these fuels make the Earth warmer.

However, hot days are coming more often now, and people are changing their minds. In Italy, homes with air conditioning rose from 15% in 2003 to 56% in 2024, CBS News reported.

What is the world’s second-largest continent (大陆)? The answer is Africa. It is much bigger than Greenland. But in the old Mercator map (墨卡托地图), Africa looks small and it is wrong in size.

To fix this, countries at the United Nations (UN) met on 4 September 2026. They decided to vote and use a new map called “Equal Earth”. One hundred and sixty-four countries said yes, and only one country — the US — said no.

Why do the sizes look wrong on the map? Because no map is perfect. The Earth is a big ball. People must change its shapes or sizes when they draw a big ball on paper. In 1569, a man named Gerardus Mercator made a map for sea travel. His map shows shapes and directions well, but not sizes.

“Maps will change our imaginations (想象),” says expert Fara Ndiaye. Kids may think Africa is less important because it is small on the old map. So it is important for schools to try the new map.

“A fair world begins with a fair map,” says Robert Dussey. His words show a small change on paper can mean a lot to the world.

16. Which of the following is TRUE about Africa?

A. It is smaller than Greenland. B. It looks small on the old Mercator map.page number 1
