A
Backpackers carrying all their equipment over multiple days or many miles often prefer simple menus that require only basic cookware — sometimes as little as a cup and a spork. When your vehicle does the heavy lifting for you, there’s little need to hold back on your camp kitchen. You can bring tools for preparing a multicourse dinner or breakfast buffet. Of course, there are options for every type of camper, whether you’re a solo or the assigned chef of a larger group.
Cookware Set or Individual Pieces
You can buy a complete set of cookware or customize your own by purchasing items piece by piece. Camp cooksets are collections of pots, pans and lids designed to nest together. Some cooksets include dinnerware such as cups or plates that nest within the pots. Individual pieces allow you the freedom to build your set exactly the way you want it. Customizing your kitchen kit allows you to tailor not only what cookware you purchase but also its final weight and amount of space it takes up.
Cookware Material Options
Pros
Cons
Aluminum
Lightweight, affordable and transfers heat well. Good for slow-cooking foods without burning.
Breaks down slowly when exposed to acidic foods. Dents and scratches easily.
Hard-anodized aluminum
This oxidized material resists scratches and wear and is long-lasting.
None.
Stainless steel
Tougher, more scratch-resistant than aluminum.
Heavier than aluminum, it does not spread heat evenly and may burn food.
Titanium
Super lightweight yet strong. Resistant to rust, it heats fast and works well at moderate heat.
More expensive than other options. Conducts heat less evenly than stainless steel. It’s important not to overheat it.
Cast iron
It’s tough and ideal for baking or cooking. Naturally nonstick after being seasoned.
Very heavy and requires specific care.
Nonstick coating
Makes cleanup a breeze.
Less durable than regular metal surfaces. Most can be scratched by metal utensils.
1. What is an advantage of individual camp cookware?
A. They cost less than full cooksets.
B. They fit inside pots to save room.
C. They have different daily tableware.
D. They help adjust kit weight and space.
2. Which material performs worst in evenly spreading heat?
A. Aluminum. B. Stainless steel. C. Titanium. D. Cast iron.
3. Which section of a magazine is this text probably taken from?
A. Travel & Outdoor. B. Health & Fitness.
C. Home & Living. D. Business & Finance.
B
Every year, high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, a man builds a bridge. The bridge is strong enough to hold the weight of more than one hundred men. But it isn’t made of iron or steel. It’s made of grasses and fibers. It hangs 60 feet above a thundering river. And the man is not a construction worker or a structural engineer — but he is the only person on earth who knows how to build this particular bridge. That man’s name is Victoriano Arizapana, and he is the inheritor of a tradition that is over 500 years old.
There’s a three-day celebration effort where four communities come together and they gather on the banks of the river. Before doing any of this, they cut down last year’s grass-made, biodegradable (可降解的) bridge, which crashes into the river with a giant splash and breaks down.
During the first day, each community has a leader to collect braided (编织成辫的) coya (科亚草) from every household. Victoriano checks the material, marking strands (草股) that are too long or too small. Villagers weave straw into four giant cables like huge braided-hair strands. Able-bodied men pull in a tug-of-war to make them tight for the bridge base.
On the second day, workers carry these massive cables to the river banks, with two stone posts on opposite ends. The hardest part follows: under Victoriano’s lead, people tug hard from both ends to make the cables as strong as possible.
On the third day, with cables and handrails ready, Victoriano and his assistant leap bare-foot onto the base cables and weave toward each other until they meet in the center. Families come down from hillsides, cheering wildly, and people walk across the new bridge again.
A modern steel bridge has stood nearby since around 1965 for safe, easy river-crossing. Even so, locals stick to this risky ancient ritual. Now in his late 60s, Victoriano hopes one of his two sons will take his place.Yuri has learned parts of the craft but cannot handle its full hard work. Low pay and outside appeals draw young people to cities, putting the tradition’s future in doubt. Still, there lingers quiet hope for this precious ancient heritage.
4. What happens to last year’s bridge?
A. It is moved far away. B. It is kept very safe.
C. It is repaired once more. D. It drops into the water.
5. What does Victoriano do on the first day?
A. He moves the ropes. B. He inspects the strands. C. He leads the workers. D. He cuts old ropes.
6. What is the order to build the bridge?
① Carry huge cables to the river banks. ② Collect and check braided coya.
③ Weave the walkway onto the cables. ④ Tug cables tightly to strengthen them.
A. ②→①→④→③ B. ②→④→①→③ C. ①→②→④→③ D. ①→④→②→③
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Locals rarely use the nearby steel bridge.
B. Few young people remain to learn the craft.
C. The old grass-bridge tradition faces survival risks.
D. Yuri has mastered most grass-bridge building skills.
C
Most people do not realise it, but a silent habit dominates much of modern life: the urge to explain oneself. Justifying a choice, a feeling or an absence is usually seen as good manners — a way of showing consideration for others. Yet the habit is not as innocent as it seems.
Carl Jung, the great psychologist, saw constant self-justification as a sign that a person has lost touch with themselves. What these explainers are really seeking is something they never received: permission to be who they are, which often begins in childhood. When a child’s sadness is called exaggeration (夸张), its anger labelled disobedience, and its fear met with laughter, a cruel message sinks in: my feelings only have value when others approve of them. The child learns a lesson that lasts a lifetime — explain yourself well, and perhaps you will not be punished, ignored or rejected.
The price of this habit is psychological freedom. People stop acting from inner faith and start acting to avoid being misunderstood; they stop feeling freely and start justifying their emotions to avoid disapproval. Life becomes a performance in which the audience has more power than the actor. Every small concession — laughing at a joke that is not funny, saying yes while meaning no — leaves a piece of yourself behind, often bringing anxiety and emptiness. Jung considered this a major barrier to becoming one’s true self. “With every explanation,” he argued, “a person seems to say: I can only exist if you allow it.”
Breaking the habit requires courage, because silence means facing the fear of being disliked. But silence, Jung insisted, is not coldness. It is an acknowledgement of being: no justifying, no reacting, simply remaining yourself.
Everyone doesn’t welcome the change. Relationships built on your constant willingness to please may fall apart, and some people will leave — but this is a screening, not a failure, which makes room for friendships based on mutual respect. The aim is not to stop communicating, but to stop begging for approval. There is a paradox (悖论) here: the less you seek permission to exist, the more respect you tend to earn. Respect grows from within — and the first step is to stop apologising for who you are.
8. Why does the author mention “good manners” in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a widely accepted practice. B. To set up a contrast with his real argument.
C. To justify the necessity of explaining oneself. D. To illustrate different forms of good manners.
9. Why do children develop the habit of explaining themselves?
A. Because they have lost touch with themselves. B. Because their feelings are exaggerated.
C. Because they want to learn good manners. D. Because they want to seek permission.
10. What does the underlined word “concession” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Apology. B. Sacrifice. C. Disagreement. D. Embarrassment.
11. What may be the best title for the text?
A. The Hidden Cost of Seeking Permission B. How to Build Real Relationships
C. The Paradox of Being Understood D. Reclaiming Existence Through Silence
D
When 15-year-old Leo sits down to finish his homework, he often complains of tired eyes. He tends to skip lines or misread words after reading for merely 20 minutes. His parents once thought it was merely a problem of inattention, until a comprehensive visual function exam uncovered that the root cause was not poor eyesight but weak accommodation of his ciliary muscle (睫状肌) — that is, the muscle’s inability to adjust focus smoothly between distant and near objects.
Clinicians use several key indicators to judge this ability. Amplitude of accommodation (AA) represents the maximum focusing strength the muscle can reach. Positive relative accommodation (PRA) shows the extra regulating reserve during near tasks, while negative relative accommodation (NRA) reflects how well the muscle can relax after long periods of close work.
For high school students, this problem is more common than many people think. Previous studies of adolescent patients found that about 49.6% had some form of accommodation or binocular vision disorder, with accommodation insufficiency being the most common. Another study showed that the rate of poor eyesight reached 72.62% among high school students. The connections between them? High school students spend far more time on near work. Weak accommodation causes eye fatigue and speeds up the loss of hyperopic (远视的) reserve, which raises the chance of developing nearsightedness.
To explore whether this weakness could be improved, a research team carried out a 12-month controlled study. Students were randomly divided into two groups. The intervention group received daily accommodative training with flipper lenses, while the control group kept their original daily schedules without special eye training. After one year, the trained group showed clear improvement in AA and PRA. More importantly, their hyperopic reserve decreased at a far slower rate. These changes suggest that the training may help slow the loss of the eye’s natural protection against poor eyesight.
Although accommodative training works well for young people suffering from weak ciliary muscle function, no single device can take the place of regular eye assessments. For high school students, protecting their eyes requires a combination of controlled near-work time, adequate outdoor exposure, and repeated follow-up visual function tests.
12. What is accommodation of the ciliary muscle?
A. The eye’s ability to relax after close work.
B. The eye’s ability to adjust for near viewing.
C. The eye’s ability to see a wide range of colors.
D. The eye’s ability to focus at different distances.
13. Which statement about the key indicators is true?
A. PRA describes the additional adjustment capacity available for near vision.
B. NRA stands for the peak focusing power the eye muscle can generate.
C. PRA shows the extra regulating reserve when looking at faraway objects.
D. NRA reflects the extent to which the muscle may tighten after close work.
14. Why is accommodative training important according to Paragraph 4?
A. It helps delay the loss of hyperopic reserve.
B. It enables students to get rid of poor eyesight.
C. It can make students get used to flipper lenses.
D. It can improve AA and PRA in a short period of time.
15. What is the main message of the passage?
A. Eye training can replace eye checks.
B. Eye training helps but is not enough.
C. Students should avoid heavy near work.
D. Lack of eye training causes nearsightedness.

The top sports stars get there with a lot of coaching— not just physical but also psychological. Here are a few secrets from sports psychology, and these tricks work equally well in everyday life. ____16____
Being nervous is good. It is normal to feel anxious, yet telling yourself to calm down seldom works. ____17____ When you are anxious, your body is in a state of high arousal (唤醒), far from calm. Reframing anxiety as excitement works because both mean high arousal, and excitement pushes you toward challenges positively. As track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy put it: never use the words nervous or anxious; use exciting and fired-up.
____18____ Athletes know self-care matters, but so does accepting others’ support. In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge broke the two-hour-marathon record. He finished the feat with pacemakers and audience support. He knew public support would help him perform better. Asking for help when facing hard tasks is not shameful. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and positive support is priceless.
Mentally rehearse. Top athletes use visualisation; they mentally rehearse big events and they picture sights, sounds as well as tough competitive moments. Real-to-life mental practice can raise motivation, build confidence and improve performance. Dina Asher-Smith, Britain’s fastest female runner, had repeatedly “won” races in her mind before real-world success. For exams or interviews, picture how things will go, spot mental barriers and work out solutions. ____19____
Talk to yourself. Negative thoughts lower confidence, even for great athletes. Self-talk—— talking to yourself—— helps fight them. Phrases like “You got this” control anxiety, build confidence and keep you focused. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali repeatedly told himself “I am the greatest” long before his success. ____20____ When self-doubt strikes, use short positive sentences to remind yourself: I can.
A. Don’t do all the work yourself.
B. Don’t seek support only in trouble.
C. You don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from them.
D. You don’t have to deliver long speeches to cheer yourself up.
E. Such mental practice fully prepares you for real-world challenges.
F. Effective self-talk often includes powerful encouraging messages.
G. Simply forcing yourself to stay peaceful ignores your real physical state.

Neria’s eyes ____31____. “What if we lost a whole body — or a whole cat?” she whispered knowingly. Saying that, Neria hid Bastet under her arm and ____32____ out of the tent. While everyone was still ____33____ in handling the pharaoh’s affairs, she hurried back with a bundle of ____34____ and a ball of yarn (毛线). Without delay, she dived into her work with Thekel.
As the sun sank in the sky, Neria trotted back home behind her father. “You did well,” he said. “The mummy you ____35____ the cat Bastet was fine — for a first try.”

One of this summer’s hottest museum cultural creations was a moth-shaped fridge magnet, inspired by the gold hairpin of Li Jingxun, a noble girl who died at 9 in the Sui Dynasty. ____36____ (sell) out instantly at the National Museum of China, it offers netizens — who call her “the most loved child in history” — a real connection to a love-filled archaeological (考古学的) story.
In essence, it is not the relic itself but the emotional bond behind cultural products ____37____ truly makes museum souvenirs meaningful. Gone are the days when museums ____38____ (be) quiet storage spaces; today, gift shops can draw ____39____(long) lines than the exhibitions themselves. While some may dismiss this trend ____40____ consumer culture, owning an object based on a relic offers a personal connection with the past. Although this ____41____ (accessible) is a global trend, China’s museum economy is special in how it makes royal symbols available to everyone, removing privilege while keeping cultural meaning.
However, the pressure to create viral souvenirs risks ____42____ (separate) relics from the stories that give them meanings. Fortunately, ____43____ hairpin’s success proves that balance is possible. Buyers ____44____ (capture) not by the fridge magnet itself, but by the emotions preserved within it — grief, love, and the hope that memory outlasts death. This reflects the true purpose of museums: not just preserving objects, but ensuring that the human stories they carry continue to find new _____45_____ (owner) across centuries.

It was a hot morning in Kenya, a country on the eastern coast of Africa. One-year-old hippo (河马) Owen followed his mother into the Sabaki River. Far beneath the ocean, the earth trembled — a tsunami was coming. The water near shore was suddenly sucked backward. Though perfectly at home in water, Owen was no match for the current. He felt himself torn from his mother, and the sea swallowed her. He was pulled out to sea. He struggled until his muscles burned, and then went weak, salt smarting his nostrils (鼻孔).
Then the wave threw him back. It lifted him like a stick and threw him onto the shore with a crash. Hurt and exhausted, he lay on the sand.
A local fisherman found him — a tiny hippo trembling, barely alive. He called the rescue hotline, and Owen was sent to Haller Park sanctuary (保护区), where he met Japhet, the animal keeper.
In the weeks that followed, Japhet stayed by Owen’s side around the clock, feeding him milk, stroking his skin, even sleeping beside the enclosure At first, Owen’s eyes were hollow with shock and grief. Gradually, the hollow look left, replaced by trust.
Soon Owen followed Japhet everywhere. When visitors leaned too close, Owen would position his half-ton body between Japhet and the fence, letting out a low rumble. At two years old, he was all solid muscle. Every evening, Japhet walked the northern boundary to check the animals and the water channels, and a shadowy shape always kept pace just inside the tree line. Japhet smiled — Owen, always the protector, even in the dark.
Yet sometimes, Japhet would catch Owen gazing at the river beyond the fence, ears pricked. It was not mere curiosity; it was a natural longing for the open river and the freedom of the wild. Owen did not belong in a sanctuary. He belonged in the wild. The thought pained Japhet, but it was the way of nature.
One stormy night, the northern channel swelled with heavy rain. Japhet stepped onto the bank to check the water level.

Some cooksets include dinnerware such as cups or plates that nest within the pots. Individual pieces allow you the freedom to build your set exactly the way you want it. Customizing your kitchen kit allows you to tailor not only what cookware you purchase but also its final weight and amount of space it takes up.

D 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据第二段“Before doing any of this, they cut down last year’s grass-made, biodegradable (可降解的) bridge, which crashes into the river with a giant splash and breaks down.(动工之前,他们会拆掉去年那座草制、可降解的旧桥。旧桥轰然坠入河中,溅起巨大水花,随后消散。)”可知,去年的桥沉入了水中。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“During the first day, each community has a leader to collect braided (编织成辫的) coya (科亚草) from every household. Victoriano checks the material, marking strands (草股) that are too long or too small.(第一天,每个社区都有负责人挨家挨户收集编好的科亚草。维克托里亚诺检查材料,标记过长或过细的草股。)”可知,维克托里亚诺第一天检查了草股。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“During the first day, each community has a leader to collect braided (编织成辫的) coya (科亚草) from every household. Victoriano checks the material, marking strands (草股) that are too long or too small.(第一天,每个社区都有负责人挨家挨户收集编好的科亚草。维克托里亚诺检查材料,标记过长或过细的草股。)”,第四段“On the second day, workers carry these massive cables to the river banks, with two stone posts on opposite ends. The hardest part follows: under Victoriano’s lead, people tug hard from both ends to make the cables as strong as possible.(第二天,工人们把这些巨型缆绳运到河岸,河的两岸各立有石柱。最难的环节随之而来:在维克托里亚诺的带领下,人们从两端使劲拉扯,让缆绳尽可能结实。)”和第五段“On the third day, with cables and handrails ready, Victoriano and his assistant leap bare-foot onto the base cables and weave toward each other until they meet in the center.(第三天,缆绳与扶手准备就绪。维克托里亚诺和助手赤脚跳到基底缆绳上,相向编织,直到在桥中间会合。)”可知,建造顺序为:先收集并检查编织好的科亚草②,再将巨型主缆运到河岸①,之后用力拖拽主缆使其更牢固④,最后在主缆上编织桥面通道③,因此正确的排序是②→①→④→③ 。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Low pay and outside appeals draw young people to cities, putting the tradition’s future in doubt.(收入微薄、外界的诱惑吸引年轻人去往城市,这项传统的未来充满变数。)”
B 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据第一段“Justifying a choice, a feeling or an absence is usually seen as good manners — a way of showing consideration for others. Yet the habit is not as innocent as it seems. (为自己的选择、感受或缺席辩护通常被视为礼貌——一种对他人表示体谅的方式。然而,这个习惯并不像看起来那么无辜。)”可知,作者先提出“好礼貌”这一普遍认知,紧接着用“Yet”转折,引出真正的论点:这种习惯并不无辜。这是为了形成对比,从而引出自己的核心观点。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“What these explainers are really seeking is something they never received: permission to be who they are, which often begins in childhood. (这些解释者真正寻求的是他们从未得到的东西:做自己的许可,而这往往始于童年。)”以及“When a child’s sadness is called exaggeration (夸张), its anger labelled disobedience, and its fear met with laughter, a cruel message sinks in: my feelings only have value when others approve of them. (当孩子的悲伤被称为夸张,愤怒被贴上不听话的标签,恐惧遭到嘲笑时,一个残酷的信息便深植心中:我的感受只有在别人认可时才有价值。)”可知,孩子形成自我解释的习惯是因为他们想要寻求他人的许可和认可。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Every small concession — laughing at a joke that is not funny, saying yes while meaning no — leaves a piece of yourself behind, often bringing anxiety and emptiness.
根据倒数第二段“Breaking the habit requires courage, because silence means facing the fear of being disliked. But silence, Jung insisted, is not coldness. It is an acknowledgement of being: no justifying, no reacting, simply remaining yourself.(改掉这个习惯需要勇气,因为沉默意味着直面不被人喜欢的恐惧。但是Jung坚持认为,沉默并非冷漠。它是对自身存在的接纳:不去辩解,不急于作出反应,只是安心做自己。)”,最后一段“The aim is not to stop communicating, but to stop begging for approval. (目标不是停止沟通,而是停止乞求认可。)”以及“Respect grows from within — and the first step is to stop apologising for who you are. (尊重源于内心——而第一步是停止为自己是谁而道歉。)”可知,文章核心在于通过沉默重新夺回自我存在的权利。D项“Reclaiming Existence Through Silence (通过沉默重获存在)”最能概括全文主旨,适合作标题。
D 13. A 14. A 15. B
根据第一段中“weak accommodation of his ciliary muscle (睫状肌) — that is, the muscle’s inability to adjust focus smoothly between distant and near objects (睫状肌调节能力弱——即肌肉无法在远近物体之间平滑调整焦点的能力)”可知,睫状肌的调节是指眼睛在不同距离下聚焦的能力。
根据第二段中“Positive relative accommodation (PRA) shows the extra regulating reserve during near tasks (正相对调节(PRA)显示了在进行近距离任务时的额外调节储备)”可知,“PRA描述近距离视物时可用的额外调节能力”与文意相符。
根据第四段中“More importantly, their hyperopic reserve decreased at a far slower rate. These changes suggest that the training may help slow the loss of the eye’s natural protection against poor eyesight. (更重要的是,他们远视储备的减少速度要慢得多。这些变化表明,训练可能有助于减缓眼睛对视力下降的自然保护能力的丧失。)”可知,调节训练的重要作用在于它能帮助延缓远视储备的流失。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。文章前四段介绍了睫状肌调节能力弱导致的问题以及眼部调节训练带来的积极效果,在最后一段作者强调“Although accommodative training works well for young people suffering from weak ciliary muscle function, no single device can take the place of regular eye assessments. (尽管调节训练对患有睫状肌功能较弱的年轻人效果良好,但没有任何单一设备可以取代定期的眼部检查。)”由此可知,文章传达的核心信息是:眼部训练确实有帮助,但仅靠它是不够的,还需要综合的护眼措施。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
C 17. G 18. A 19. E 20. D

由后文“Athletes know self-care matters, but so does accepting others’ support. In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge broke the two-hour-marathon record. He finished the feat with pacemakers and audience support. He knew public support would help him perform better. Asking for help when facing hard tasks is not shameful.(运动员懂得照顾自己,也明白接纳他人支持同样重要。2019年,埃利乌德・基普乔格打破马拉松两小时纪录。在配速员和观众的支持下,他完成了这项壮举。他知道外界的支持能让自己发挥得更好。面对艰巨任务时求助并不可耻。)”可知,本段后文讲述运动员需要接纳他人的支持,基普乔格依靠配速员和观众的帮助完成挑战,求助不是软弱的表现。A项“Don’t do all the work yourself.(不必独自包揽所有事情。)”
上文“For exams or interviews, picture how things will go, spot mental barriers and work out solutions.(备考或者面试前,预想整个过程,找出心理障碍并想好对策。)” E项“Such mental practice fully prepares you for real-world challenges.(这种心理练习能让你充分做好准备,迎接现实中的挑战。)”
上文“Boxing legend Muhammad Ali repeatedly told himself “I am the greatest” long before his success.(拳击传奇穆罕默德・阿里,在成功之前就反复告诉自己 “我是最棒的”。)”列举了穆罕默德・阿里自我鼓励的例子,后文“When self-doubt strikes, use short positive sentences to remind yourself: I can.(当自我怀疑袭来时,用简短积极的句子提醒自己:我可以。)” D项“You don’t have to deliver long speeches to cheer yourself up.(你不需要长篇大论来鼓舞自己。)”

本句是it is…that…强调句型,强调主语not the relic itself but the emotional bond behind cultural products,要用that。

In the quiet week after the rescue, Japhet made the hardest decision of his life.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly the mud gave way, throwing him into the rushing floodwater. The strong current swept Japhet downstream. He struggled to stay afloat until his strength ran out. Just then, Owen appeared. He slipped his huge body under Japhet, lifting him firmly above the water. Against the raging flood, Owen’s massive frame worked like a steady raft. With powerful strokes, the hippo carried Japhet safely to the shallow bank. Shaking and coughing, Japhet looked up at Owen, whose eyes were calm and loyal.
In the quiet week after the rescue, Japhet made the hardest decision of his life. He realized Owen was a wild creature meant for the river. At dawn, he unlocked the gate and led Owen to the river. He gently stroked Owen’s forehead, saying nothing. Owen stepped into the current. Midway, he turned back and gazed at Japhet for a long while. He let out his familiar low rumble before disappearing around the bend. Japhet stood there, heart full. True love means letting go.
