Four Best Astronomy and Stargazing Apps for Smartphones
A good smartphone app can help you find and take photos of objects in the night sky. Here are some of the best, tried and tested.
Sky Guide
Pros: Latest astronomy news
Cons: Need you to pay for full use
It has a clean interface (界面), including a cosmic calendar and weather forecasts. The app offers great news and articles from science speaker Dr Jenifer Millard. Along with its calendar and news, it provides plenty of stars, space objects and satellites for beginner stargazers.
Celestron SkyPortal
Pros: Audio tours in earphones
Cons: Large app at 296MB
After an easy pairing process, this app turns your phone into a wireless remote. You can tap an object on your phone screen, and your telescope will move automatically so you can see the object through its view lens (目镜).
At its core is a great planetarium (天文馆) app, with four hours of voice guides, and you can download it for free.
Universe2go
Pros: Free app; great voice guides; augmented reality
Cons: Larger smartphones won’t fit in headset
Of the many stargazing apps, there are few audio guides or enhanced reality offerings that overlay information directly onto the night sky. This one is both.
Cosmic Watch
Pros: Creative design; encourages a new perspective on stargazing
Cons: Large app at 178MB
Time is not a number. It stands for an exact spot in space, as you’ll quickly learn from this stunning 3D app that’s both a standard world clock and an astronomical timepiece. You can tell time by watching the changing positions of the Moon, the Sun, and the planets. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of celestial (天体的) motions, making the app both detailed and informative.
21. Which app allows users to control a telescope remotely?
A. Sky Guide B. Celestron SkyPortal C. Universe2go D. Cosmic Watch
22. For Cosmic Watch users, the new perspective on stargazing is that it can ________.
A. serve to forecast the weather. B. act as a clock for daily use.
C. help to mark the position of the planets. D. tell time by observing celestial movements.
23. What do Celestron SkyPortal and Universe2go have in common?
A. They provide voice guides. B. They are free of charge.
C. They support augmented reality. D. They demand much storage.

Jim Cantore is a beloved meteorologist (气象学家) for The Weather Channel, known for reporting from the center of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other extreme events. He recently celebrated 40 years at the network.
“I’m blessed The Weather Channel has given me the opportunity to do that,” Cantore says. “Nothing beats going out in the field. That is the real storm. You’re in it. You’re a part of it. You tell the story.”
Advances in broadcasting technology have greatly changed field reporting. Live cameras now allow crews to broadcast without setting up the large satellite dishes used during Hurricane Katrina. Cantore says that continuous live coverage has made his job more demanding, but it also keeps him fully engaged in the moment.
The first hurricane Cantore covered was Andrew in 1992. About 115 storms later, he covered Hurricane Milton. Yet he does not keep souvenirs to mark each storm. “I’m not a collector. I’m blessed I just got to do this job.” One thing he can’t do is just go on air and deliver a forecast without preparation. He has to study the weather carefully and understand the conditions for himself.
Cantore considers his laptop the most essential piece of equipment he carries. If he’s out standing in the middle of a storm, he wears a helmet and body armor (胸甲). He never wants to be the story. “Who will come to get me? And why should anyone have to, especially when I’m telling people to stay out of harm’s way? I have to do everything I can to broadcast and not get hurt.”
A couple of months ago there were people saying Cantore was retiring. He has set the record straight since, branding it “fake news”. “I still get a little pump. It’s still fun to be out in the middle of it.”
24. What does Cantore enjoy most about his work?
A. Reporting directly from the field.
B. Celebrating major career milestones.
C. Developing new broadcasting equipment.
D. Checking the accuracy of weather forecasts.
25. What does Cantore’s comment that he is “not a collector” suggest?
A. He cares more about the experience itself.
B. He is not interested in how storms develop.
C. He sees every storm as a personal achievement.
D. He has forgotten most of the storms he covered.
26. Cantore’s wish not to “be the story” shows that he is ________.
A. easy-going
B. strong-willed
C. safety-conscious
D. attention-seeking
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Life of a Forecaster
B. A Storm-Tracking Legend
C. A Story from The Weather Channel
D. The Most Dangerous Job in America

When an extreme heat wave struck Illinois in June 2022, crop physiologist Katherine Meacham-Hensold hoped her team’s new bioengineered potato variety would survive it — but she was astonished by just how well it thrived. The plant yielded 30 percent more of its large red tubers than a normal, unengineered plant in the same conditions, according to a recent study in Global Change Biology.
Meacham-Hensold and her colleagues at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign had engineered the potato to overcome a major limitation in plant biology: a wasteful, heat-triggered process called photorespiration (光呼吸).
This occurs when RuBisCO, a key photosynthesis enzyme (光合作用酶), accidentally captures oxygen instead of carbon dioxide, creating an unwanted byproduct. This error becomes more frequent at high temperatures, gobbling up energy that would otherwise contribute to growth and potentially reducing crop yields by up to 50 percent.
To solve this problem, the team introduced a new gene that produced a protein capable of breaking down the unwanted by-product inside the cells’ photosynthesis centers. As a result, the plant didn’t need to process or transport the by-product elsewhere. This saved energy, similar to how eating local food saves the energy of trucking it across the country.
The results are exciting, says biochemist Edward Smith of the University of Oxford, although he’d like to see data from future growing seasons.
The new technique could help crops adapt to climate change. Similar strategies have been used previously in rice, but this study is the first to show that it doesn’t cause a decrease in a food crop’s nutritional quality. Meacham-Hensold and her team froze and ground up the tubers to measure their fiber, sugars, protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins.
Next the researchers are working on soybeans and cowpeas; the latter is “a hugely important food-security crop in African countries,” Meacham-Hensold says. A high-yield soybean variety with the same genetic change will hit the field this year.
28. How did Meacham-Hensold initially feel when the heat wave hit?
A. Concerned. B. Relieved. C. Astonished. D. Pessimistic.
29. What do the underlined words “gobbling up” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Storing. B. Collecting. C. Releasing. D. Consuming.
30. What is special about the new technique in this study?
A. It improves crops’ natural flavor.
B. It shortens crops’ growing seasons.
C. It preserves crops’ nutritional value.
D. It helps crops adapt to climate change.
31. What is the researchers’ next move regarding the new technique?
A. Apply it to other crops.
B. Promote it among farmers.
C. Evaluate its impact on food security.
D. Study its performance across seasons.
D
You’re at a theme park. After a 45-minute wait in the heat, your feet ache and you wonder why you’re bothering. But then you get on the ride. It’s thrilling. You reach the peak (顶峰) of the rollercoaster and let out an excited roar. You step off and feel alive. The irritation of the queue couldn’t be further from your mind.
This illustrates the peak-end rule, a psychological bias (心理偏差) where we judge an experience based on how we felt at its most intense moment (the peak) and its conclusion (the end), rather than an average of how we felt throughout the entire experience.
The model was proposed by psychologists Barbara Fredrickson and Daniel Kahneman. In their 1993 study, participants put one hand in 14℃ water for 60 seconds. In the second trial, they put the other hand in 14℃ water for 60 seconds, and kept it there for another 30 seconds while the temperature was gradually raised to 15℃. Asked which trial they would repeat, most chose the second, despite spending longer in cold water.
Since then, the peak-end rule has been observed in many areas of life. Patients may rate painful medical procedures more favourably if they are slightly longer but end with a gradual decrease in pain. But the rule can also work the other way around. Life coach Latasha Baynham notes that a painful departure from a job can overshadow years of good work.
Our brains do this because we tend to have a better memory of highly emotional events. To break free, Baynham suggests separating what happened from what we’ve decided it means. One way is to divide a page into two columns. Write down the facts in one and the story you have attached to them in the other. “My role was removed” is a fact; “I’m not as good as I thought” is a story. Then recover the rest of the evidence and consider the whole experience.
The aim isn’t to pretend a difficult experience did not matter, but to stop one part of the story from becoming the whole truth. Becoming aware of how we subconsciously rewrite our experiences can help us find balance and self-compassion.
32. Which situation best illustrates the peak-end rule?
A. Jack enjoys every part of a concert equally.
B. Tom feels tired after studying for several hours.
C. The smell of fresh bread makes Emma feel hungry.
D. A lovely final dinner makes Lily recall a dull trip fondly.
33. Why did most participants choose the second trial in the 1993 study?
A. It lasted for a longer time. B. It ended with less discomfort.
C. It used a more familiar method. D. It caused less pain throughout the trial.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss?
A. How the rule affects real-life judgments. B. How job satisfaction relates to physical pain.
C. Why emotional events are remembered clearly. D. Why longer treatments may earn higher ratings.
35. What would someone following Baynham’s advice most likely do after losing a job?
A. Put the experience aside until they feel ready to reflect.
B. View the experience as a sign they should change careers.
C. Identify who was responsible before deciding how to respond.
D. Review their overall performance before drawing conclusions.
If you read about AI, you’ll often find a common belief: people who don’t want to use AI are simply afraid or don’t understand it. They may fear losing their jobs or changing the way they work. Or they may not understand the technology well enough to see its benefits. ____36____
But there are rational reasons why people may choose to do something themselves instead of using AI. Effort can have value of its own. Sometimes, putting in effort gives us something that greater efficiency cannot provide. We can see this in several areas of life.
____37____ If we want to fulfill our potential, we need to work hard to master things that matter to us. Making art, mastering an instrument, or becoming an expert can help us grow. Even if AI can create a picture quickly, someone who wants to become a painter still needs to develop their own skills.
Effort can show how much we care. For example, caring for someone during a difficult time can communicate deep love. ____38____
Effort can also be connected with how we see good behavior. We are often taught that working hard is a good quality, while being lazy is not. ____39____ So, choosing to do something ourselves may sometimes reflect our moral values, rather than a fear of new technology.
____40____ When people choose not to use AI, they may not be expressing fear or ignorance. They may simply be protecting things they value, such as personal growth, care for others, and the satisfaction of working hard.
A. Effort helps us develop ourselves.
B. Efficiency is just one thing to value among many.
C. These views make not using AI seem unreasonable.
D. This is why people should do important things by themselves.
E. The easier a task becomes, the more valuable its result will be.
F. We may feel that avoiding work goes against what we believe is right.
G. Using AI for a personal message may mean that some meaning is missing.

The annual cross-country tryout notice was posted on the school bulletin board, and the news spread quickly through our classroom, creating a tense atmosphere. Everyone talked about it in low voices. As captain of the school running team, I bore a double responsibility.
I had to compete for a top place and, at the same time, help my best friend Ben qualify for the school team. Ben was a fast runner, but he lacked steady endurance. That weakness had caused him to collapse from tiredness and fail to finish last year’s race.
To help him achieve his goal, I followed a private arrangement made by my coach. I would act as his pacer in the tryout. I was to set a steady early speed, helping him build a comfortable running rhythm and preserve energy for the final stage. The plan was practical, yet it brought me inner unease. Ben always saw me as a fair competitor and trusted me to race side by side with him. He did not know that I was secretly guiding him.
The tryout took place on a misty morning. When the starting gun fired, all runners rushed forward at full speed. I kept a proper lead over Ben to control the pace, constantly aware of his heavy breathing behind me. After running two kilometers, I looked back and found Ben struggling with exhaustion but still closely following my footsteps with full trust. Although he was tired, he refused to give up.
An unexpected accident occurred during the race. My left shoelace came loose, making me trip and fall on the grass. Ben slowed down immediately, caught in a dilemma between pursuing his dream and caring for me. I struggled to my feet and signaled to him to keep running.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
We continued the race soon, but my ankle began to ache badly.

A 25. A 26. C 27. B
根据第二段中Cantore的话“Nothing beats going out in the field. That is the real storm. You’re in it. You’re a part of it. You tell the story.(没有什么比亲临现场更好的了。那才是真正的风暴。你在其中。你是它的一部分。你讲述这个故事。)”可知,Cantore最喜欢的是直接在现场进行报道。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Yet he does not keep souvenirs to mark each storm. “I’m not a collector. I’m blessed I just got to do this job.”(然而他并不保留纪念品来标记每一场风暴。“我不是收藏家。我很幸运能从事这份工作。”)”可知,Cantore说自己“不是收藏家”,表明他更在意经历本身,而非用纪念品去记录成就。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“If he’s out standing in the middle of a storm, he wears a helmet and body armor (胸甲). He never wants to be the story. “Who will come to get me? And why should anyone have to, especially when I’m telling people to stay out of harm’s way? I have to do everything I can to broadcast and not get hurt.”(如果他要站在风暴中间,他会戴上头盔和胸甲。他从不想成为新闻本身。“谁会来救我?为什么非得有人来救我,尤其是我还在告诉人们远离危险的时候?我必须尽一切努力完成报道而不受伤。”)”可知,Cantore不想“成为新闻本身”表明他安全意识很强。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“Jim Cantore is a beloved meteorologist (气象学家) for The Weather Channel, known for reporting from the center of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other extreme events. He recently celebrated 40 years at the network.(Jim Cantore是The Weather Channel深受喜爱的气象学家,以从飓风、龙卷风和其他极端事件中心进行报道而闻名。他最近庆祝了在该电视网工作40年。)”以及最后一段“A couple of months ago there were people saying Cantore was retiring. He has set the record straight since, branding it “fake news”. “I still get a little pump. It’s still fun to be out in the middle of it.”(几个月前有人说Cantore要退休了。他此后澄清了这一点,称其为“假新闻”。“我仍然有点激动。身处其中仍然很有趣。”)”可知,全文围绕Cantore长期追踪风暴、坚守现场报道的传奇经历展开,B项“A Storm-Tracking Legend(一位追踪风暴的传奇人物)”最能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。
C
A 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据划线单词所在句“This error becomes more frequent at high temperatures, gobbling up energy that would otherwise contribute to growth and potentially reducing crop yields by up to 50 percent.(在高温环境下,这种错误发生得更为频繁,它会gobbling up本可用于植物生长的能量,并且有可能使作物减产多达50%)”可知,这里说的是高温时这种错误变得更频繁,会对本应促进生长的能量产生某种影响,且可能使作物产量降低多达50%,从“降低产量”可推断出是消耗了能量。
根据文章第六段“The new technique could help crops adapt to climate change. Similar strategies have been used previously in rice, but this study is the first to show that it doesn’t cause a decrease in a food crop’s nutritional quality.(这项新技术有助于作物适应气候变化。此前,类似的策略已在水稻上得到应用,但这项研究首次表明,这种技术不会导致粮食作物的营养品质下降)”可知,此前类似的策略已在水稻上应用,但这项研究首次表明该技术不会导致粮食作物营养品质下降,即它能保持作物的营养价值。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Next the researchers are working on soybeans and cowpeas; the latter is “a hugely important food-security crop in African countries,” Meacham-Hensold says. A high-yield soybean variety with the same genetic change will hit the field this year.(接下来,研究人员将致力于研究大豆和豇豆;Meacham-Hensold说,豇豆是“在非洲国家是一种极其重要的粮食安全作物”。今年,一种经过相同基因改造的高产大豆品种将进入田间试验阶段)”可知,研究人员接下来将致力于将这项新技术应用于大豆和豇豆上。由此推知,他们的下一步行动是将新技术应用于其他作物。故选A。
D 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第二段“This illustrates the peak-end rule, a psychological bias (心理偏差) where we judge an experience based on how we felt at its most intense moment (the peak) and its conclusion (the end), rather than an average of how we felt throughout the entire experience.(这就体现了峰终定律,一种心理偏差:我们评判一段经历时,依据的是感受最强烈的时刻(峰值)和这段经历的收尾时刻(终点),而不是整个过程里所有感受的平均值)”可知,一顿美好的晚餐让莉莉深情回忆起一次乏味的旅行最能体现“峰终定律”。
根据第三段“In the second trial, they put the other hand in 14℃ water for 60 seconds, and kept it there for another 30 seconds while the temperature was gradually raised to 15℃. Asked which trial they would repeat, most chose the second, despite spending longer in cold water.(在第二次试验中,他们将另一只手放入14℃的水中60秒,然后继续保持30秒,期间水温逐渐升至15℃。当被问及会选择重复哪一次试验时,大多数人选择了第二次,尽管他们在冷水中停留的时间更长)”可知,大多数参与者在1993年的研究中选择了第二次试验是因为它结束时的不适感更小。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Since then, the peak-end rule has been observed in many areas of life. Patients may rate painful medical procedures more favourably if they are slightly longer but end with a gradual decrease in pain. But the rule can also work the other way around. Life coach Latasha Baynham notes that a painful departure from a job can overshadow years of good work.(此后,峰终定律在生活的许多方面都得到了体现。患者可能会对疼痛的医疗程序给予更积极的评价,如果过程稍长一些,但最终疼痛感逐渐减轻。然而,这一法则也可能反过来起作用。人生教练拉塔莎·贝恩汉指出,一次痛苦的离职可能掩盖了多年来的出色工作成果)”可知,第4段主要讨论了该规则如何影响现实生活中的判断。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Baynham suggests separating what happened from what we’ve decided it means. One way is to divide a page into two columns. Write down the facts in one and the story you have attached to them in the other. “My role was removed” is a fact; “I’m not as good as I thought” is a story. Then recover the rest of the evidence and consider the whole experience.(贝恩汉建议把发生的客观事实和我们主观赋予这件事的解读区分开。
C 37. A 38. G 39. F 40. B
根据上文“If you read about AI, you’ll often find a common belief: people who don’t want to use Al are simply afraid or don’t understand it. They may fear losing their jobs or changing the way they work. Or they may not understand the technology well enough to see its benefits.(如果你读过关于人工智能的文章,往往会发现一种普遍的看法:不想使用AI的人只是害怕或不了解它。他们可能担心会失去工作或改变工作方式,又或者他们对这项技术理解得不够深入,无法看到其带来的好处)”可知,空前列举了大众普遍认为不愿使用AI的人是恐惧或不了解AI的观点,C项“这些观点让不使用AI看起来毫无道理”承接上文的既有认知,起到过渡作用,符合语境。
【37题详解】
根据后文“If we want to fulfill our potential, we need to work hard to master things that matter to us. Making art, mastering an instrument, or becoming an expert can help us grow. Even if AI can create a picture quickly, someone who wants to become a painter still needs to develop their own skills.(如果我们想充分发挥自己的潜力,就必须努力掌握对我们重要的事物。创作艺术、精通乐器或成为专家,都有助于我们成长。即使人工智能能快速生成图像,但想要成为一名画家的人仍需培养自身的技能)”可知,空后段落阐述努力掌握事物能帮助人成长、发掘潜能,A项“努力帮助我们自我发展”精准概括该段核心主旨,适配段首位置。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Effort can show how much we care. For example, caring for someone during a difficult time can communicate deep love.(付出可以体现我们有多么关心他人。例如,在困难时期照顾一个人,就能传达出深深的爱意)”可知,空前提到付出努力照料他人能传递深厚爱意,G项“用AI生成私人讯息可能会缺失部分情感意义”体现了AI的反作用。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Effort can also be connected with how we see good behavior. We are often taught that working hard is a good quality, while being lazy is not.(努力也可以与我们如何看待良好行为有关。
根据后文“When people choose not to use AI, they may not be expressing fear or ignorance.

Ranking My Senior High School Life Essentials
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ranking My Senior High School Life Essentials
From my perspective, I would rank the three essentials as: first, emotional regulation, then, learning, and finally, exercise.
Emotional regulation tops the list because high school is full of pressure and change. Without emotional regulation, students could not keep a stable pace of study and life. Coming in second place is learning. High school offers a unique chance to gain knowledge and develop thinking skills, both of which matter enormously in future study and work. Exercise ranks the lowest, as its benefits can be obtained without sacrificing the top two. Teenagers can stay energetic through short daily workouts if they plan their time efficiently.
In conclusion, high school is about balance, but having a clear priority helps us make wise choices.

We continued the race soon, but my ankle began to ache badly. Sharp pain shot through my ankle each time I stepped on the ground. I could hardly keep the steady pace we had planned. Noticing my awkward movements, Ben hesitated again. Instead of rushing ahead alone, he adjusted his speed to match mine. “We run together,” he said firmly. No longer was I his hidden pacer; we became real partners. Burning with gratitude, I tried my best to keep up with him. We encouraged each other, pushed through the last uphill section, and crossed the finishing line side by side.
When the results were announced later, Ben found me out, holding the qualification list. A big smile spread across his face — he had made the team. He then saw my swollen ankle and helped me sit down gently. I told him the whole secret plan about being his pacer. Ben shook his head and said he didn’t mind at all. What mattered most to him was that we trusted and supported each other. At that moment, I realized true friendship meant more than just winning a race.
