Have you ever found it difficult to get up early on cold mornings? We often feel tired and sleepy when we wake up. It really needs strong courage to get up in winter. Here are some tips for you to make “getting up on cold mornings” easy.
Get as much natural light as you can
Enough bright light will help you get up early, says Jennifer Martin, doctor from American Academy of Sleep Medicine. That’s because light influences melatonin (褪黑激素), which plays an important role in sleep. As a result, when you wake up, taking a walk or enjoying coffee outside will be good. Some people prefer to use curtains or wear eye masks to create a dark sleeping environment, but that will be a bad idea if you want to get up early the next day.
Form the fixed early rising habit
There are two ways to help you get up early. First, you can force yourself to get up at a fixed time. It must be difficult in the beginning, but after a few weeks, you will not feel hard. Martin recommends people can try another way. You can get up ten minutes earlier than usual on the first day. After a few days, you can get up another ten minutes earlier. Finally, you will get used to the new habit.
Go to bed early in the evening
A fixed bedtime is also important to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Most people should have at least seven hours of sleep. So you’ll probably need to go to bed early if you want to change your habit. Research shows that we should make sure we are not in the bright light for at least an hour before we sleep. Bright light will influence our abilities to fall asleep. Listening to soft music or doing some reading may be helpful before you sleep.
Plan something to look forward to
To encourage you to get out of bed, Martin suggests treating yourself to something special you can enjoy. Go to buy your favourite coffee or pick up some delicious breakfast. Start a day with something nice, and you will find getting up early on cold mornings is not difficult.

Strawberries are nice and delicious, but you have to pick them carefully, because they get hurt easily. Nowadays, many teenagers are just like strawberries. They easily lose control when they face difficulties. They don’t know what to do with difficulties when they are in trouble. There is a name for them — strawberry children.
Why do many students lose control so easily? Many students are the only child in their family. Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life, grandparents always give them what they want, and schools pay more attention to their grades instead of developing their personalities.
Wang Ran, 13 years old, is from Guangdong. His mum hardly criticizes (批评) him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly, he felt surprised and sad. Then he began to doubt his ability.
Students should learn how to make themselves mentally (精神上) strong. A youth worker said, “When you are in trouble, don’t ask for help too quickly. You should try to work out problems first by yourself. Take part in sports and social activities actively. That can help you become mentally strong.”
Growing up is not simply a happy process. Pains also go along with it. The most important thing is facing the pains bravely and learning from them.

She has been interested in Chongming traditional fabric (织物), made from cotton and colored with plant dyes (染料) since she was a girl. She learned how to weave (编织) the cloth from her mother.
Before leaving her job, Song had been using her after-work time to design, sew and weave everything with her own hands. At first, the small items she made became a hit in the office. “When the things you make are liked by others, you’ll find yourself enjoying doing more and more,” Song said. Later, her name spread and she soon found that many women on the island were into handicrafts (手工艺品) like her. Her childhood playmates, friends and even strangers joined her.
A turning point came when Song and her team were having a small exhibition in a park. A crowd of people were around them to see what they were doing. Not long after that, she decided to make Chongming Traditional Fabric official. Cotton-Tree Flowers Bloom Workshop was set up in 2013. And her workshop became a place filled with happiness. By designing and making all kinds of cloth items and selling them, the women have achieved a lot and have also found their own value.
Soon, more and more women joined. Besides bringing tourists to their workshop to watch the process of making Chongming traditional fabric, Song started to give free classes to poor groups. They started Mama Moon Single Mothers’ Club, a training program for single mothers. They started Happiness on Fingertips, another program for people with disabilities.

五、阅读理解
①Have you ever thought: What else can you do on a train? You can sleep or look at your phone. But there is more. In China, some trains become special places. They bring people and China’s intangible cultural heritage together.
②Trains run across China. They are great places to show local traditional culture. Take the K7041 train from Harbin to Mohe in Heilongjiang as an example. It is an ICH train. On this train, Gulayier wore traditional clothes. He sang Oroqen (鄂伦春) folk songs. His partner played the Oroqen jaw harp, a kind of musical instrument (乐器). Tourists on the train, especially visitors from southern China, sang and danced happily with the two performers. Gulayier said the train helps tourists notice his shows more easily. He thought the train was a good place to spread ICH.
③Traditional heritage becomes lively on trains. More ICH shows are on high-speed trains across China. For example, Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing, Yulin puppet shows and tea-picking operas in Guangxi. Passengers on the trains can watch traditional culture closely.
④Professor Xiao Fang from Beijing Normal University agrees with Gulayier. He thinks ICH trains have another good point. These trains do more than spread culture. They also help tourism. When passengers enjoy local traditions on the train, they often become more interested in visiting the places the train goes through.
⑤However, ICH trains still face some problems. There is little space on trains. Also, passengers get on and off at every station. So people come up with some ways to solve the problems. There are cultural corners to show traditional arts. QR codes (二维码) can link to (连接到) more digital information. These help passengers learn about ICH at their own speed. They can keep learning after the trip.
⑥The success of ICH trains teaches us useful lessons for protecting culture around the world. It tells us innovation and tradition can work together. They can keep cultural heritage alive for young people in the future.

One of the phrases which greatly puzzled (使……困惑) me was “entertaining angels (天使) unaware”. How could anybody be unaware of entertaining an angel? I’ve never thought that angelic qualities could hide under very ordinary voices and in everyday bodies.
My angel, as it turned out, hid inside the little body of my school teacher, Miss McKenzie. To me she was always a little old lady, with her grey hair framing a round rosy face and caught up in an old-fashioned bun (发髻) on top of her head.
Although I enjoyed Miss McKenzie’s approval (赞同), I never really felt very close to her. I had never asked her advice as to what I should do when I left school. Surely there was only one thing to do: Get a job and make money as quickly as possible. But Miss McKenzie had other ideas. We in our house knew nothing of scholarships for fatherless children. The idea of a child from a working-class family going to college was the very thing of storybooks.
Unknown to us, she forced the headmaster to put my name forward for a special scholarship open to children who showed a gift, and who would receive further education. He agreed, although he was a bit worried about the cost of keeping me at college for a whole year. No earnings from me, and costs and clothes to be covered, for, of course, only the fees (学费) would be paid if I won.
Miss McKenzie brushed all argument aside. To this day I can remember my complete surprise when, on being asked if she felt I had any special qualities, this elderly teacher banged the desk with her hand, and declared (断言) in an American saying I never thought she knew, “I’d stake (以……打赌) my bottom dollar on this girl!”
I shook at the passion (激情) in her voice, and at her trust in me. “What if I fail her?” I thought to myself. “What if she has to pay all the money back if I let her down?” I had a sense of responsibility and I shouldn’t let her down.
The time at college went by quickly. At the end of my year at college, I was able to lay before her the college gold medal as the year’s top student and a whole pile of awards.
And suddenly as I looked at her, and saw her eyes shining with pride behind the gold-rimmed glasses, I realized how widely she had thrown open the door of chance for me. And I knew for the first time what the phrase “entertaining angels unaware” meant. For there, standing before me in class, was my very own angel, Miss McKenzie.

In many areas of life, people compete even when it does not benefit them. Office workers stay late at work to avoid looking lazy. On social media, people feel pressed to post perfect photos. These situations all come from a problem called the theater effect, which explains why it is hard for people to stop competing, even when it is unnecessary.
The theater effect happens when one person tries to do better, forcing others to follow. In the end, everyone works harder, but no one truly benefits. Imagine watching a movie—if the people in front stand up, those behind must stand too. Finally, everyone is standing, but the view remains the same.
A well-known experiment at Stanford University tested this idea. Researchers invited 200 people to bid(竞标) for a $100 bill. The highest bidder won, but the second-highest still had to pay. At first, bids were small, but as the price neared $100, people refused to stop. Some even bid more than $100 just to avoid losing their earlier bids. This irrational behavior shows that once competition begins, people realize that it’s hard to stop competing, even when it no longer makes sense.
The theater effect comes from early human survival instincts(本能). Back then, the dopamine system in our brain made us feel good about short-term success, like catching food, because it ensured survival. Today, this same system drives us to aim for victory in competitions—even where the results are meaningless. However, modern life is different. Today, while basic needs are no longer a big problem for us, we should learn to think clearly.
Then how can we stop this kind of useless competition? First, we should know that we don’t need to win all the time to prove our value. Real growth means doing better than before, not better than others. Second, we should take a moment to ask ourselves, “Are we doing it because we truly enjoy it, or just because we are afraid to be left behind?” Another important point is to aim for meaningful goals, not just to win. Focus on what truly matters, and feel peace in your heart—that is how we find real happiness.
So next time you feel pressed to “stand up”, just because others do, ask yourself: Is this really the best choice for me?
1.According to the passage, which is probably the example of the theater effect?

On February 22, Guo Hongyi, an 8-year-old boy, solved a 4-level Tower of Hanoi with one hand in 4.305 seconds and set a new world record.
Tower of Hanoi is a maths game which has been popular for centuries. To solve a Tower of Hanoi puzzle, it needs your brain, eyes and hands to work together.
Tower of Hanoi is made up of three poles and a stack of discs. The discs should be placed from the largest on the bottom to the smallest on the top. The way to play the game is to move the whole stack from Pole (a) to Pole (c). There are three simple rules as follows:
◆Only one disc can be moved at a time.
◆You can only move the top disc of a stack.
◆Each disc can be placed on any pole, but it can’t be placed on top of a smaller disc.
Tower of Hanoi was invented by a French mathematician called Edouard Lucas in 1883. His idea came from an ancient story: In an Eastern temple (寺庙) with three huge poles, the god asked the priests (僧侣) to move a stack of 64 golden discs from Pole One to Pole Three. Edouard found the maths problem in the story interesting and tried to work out the minimum (最小的) number of moves to solve the puzzle. Finally, he came up with the formula (公式): 2n-1, where “n” is the number of discs. According to the formula, even if the priests made one move every second, it would take 500 billion years to finish. It was an impossible task for them.
Nowadays, Tower of Hanoi is used in many fields, such as the psychological research and computer science. It has made great contributions to humans’ lives.
So next time you’re looking for a fun and challenging puzzle game, give Tower of Hanoi a try.

The list for the sixth-grade basketball team was announced (宣布) online. I was a little worried because I knew how much my 12-year-old son wanted to make the team.
I read the list of 13 names for a few minutes. Finally, I had to tell myself that my son wasn’t on the list. I felt sad. I wished it would be about victory. Like every parent, I love to say, “You did it!”
Instead, I had to give my son a speech to comfort him, which was a lot less exciting, but probably more important. It was not really a speech, but a further discussion about spirit, courage and not giving up. Although it was painful for me to see myself so disappointed (失望), I needed to keep my own feelings in check. Sure, I wanted to call the coach to say he made a big mistake, but I would not. Nor would I let my son know that I thought it unfair. Instead, I put my own feelings aside and let my son have a safe place to calm down. And when he was done, I needed to encourage him to continue to improve skills. That day was a loss, but the only way to get another win was to put on his trainers and get on the basketball court again.
My son is 15 years old now. And, after being cut from the team for three years in a row (连续地), he got to see his name on the list for the high school team. Last week, my husband and I watched him play in his first game. The smile on his face when he made his first shot is something I will never forget. After so many failures, it was a win that didn’t come easy for him. And it wouldn’t have happened if he had given up trying.

People question whether social media (媒体) is making modern society less empathetic (有同感的). Some studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic, while others suggest quite the opposite.
To learn more about the question, we asked over 1,250 American participants (参与者) how often they checked social media. They also completed questionnaires (问卷) where they decided whether they have the qualities that researchers call empathy, such as thinking from other people’s point of view, feeling worried for other people in trouble, and feeling bad when others feel bad.
Our study found that the more social media people reported using, the lower their levels of empathy were. This finding didn’t change much according to the type of social media they use, their gender (性别), or education. However, we only asked American adults. Is it possible that the relationship we found would not be true elsewhere?
Indeed, researchers in other areas have found different results. Researchers in the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands have shown that, in their countries, the higher people used social media, the higher empathy they had. An Indian study found no relationship between the two.
To learn the big picture, we compared (比较) all these studies. We found that the relationship between social media use and empathy differed based on two things: age and nationality. In general, studies carried out in Europe found a positive (积极的) connection between social media use and empathy, while studies in the U.S. found no meaningful or negative (消极的) connection. Besides, research done with children under 18 showed a positive connection, while research with adults found no connection.
Cultural differences may explain the difference. Americans are more likely to post news about their personal achievements online. It is no surprise that Americans who use social media often are not developing their empathy skills. But populations outside of America appear to use social media for different purposes, including strengthening friendships. For them, more social media use is connected with being more empathetic. Perhaps people’s purposes for using social media can tell us more about their character.
1.What is the main purpose of the research described in the passage?
A.To prove that social media makes people less empathetic.
B.To study the influence of social media on American adults.
C.To compare the empathy levels of different nationalities.
D.To discover the relationship between social media use and empathy.

A.All studies show that heavy social media users are less empathetic.
B.The relationship between social media use and empathy is the same in all countries.
C.Research showed a positive connection between social media use and empathy in the UK, Spain and the Netherlands.
D.American adults using social media often are more likely to develop their empathy skills.
4.Which statement will the writer probably agree with?
A.Indians like to show off online.
B.Children are more empathetic than adults.

B.Why Americans Are Less Empathetic on Social Media.
C.Social Media and Empathy: A Complex (复杂的) Relationship.
D.How to Develop Empathy Skills through Social Media.
Twenty years ago, a new version (版本) of The Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》), a great work of Chinese Kunqu Opera that includes music, poetry, beautiful clothes, and smooth actions, came out in Taiwan, China, causing great excitement and then touring worldwide.
This was not a usual version. Known as the youth version of The Peony Pavilion, it hoped to bring new life into the traditional art form. “Many young people saw Kunqu for the first time through this play and later fell in love with it,” said Bai Xianyong, the producer of the play.
Actually, Bai’s love for bringing back Kunqu wasn’t an accident. “At that time, many Kunqu masters were nearing retirement (退休), and there was a real danger that this art form would face a lack (缺乏) of skill and tradition,” Bai said. “To make it stay active, we need to attract young people back to the theater as soon as possible.”
In 2003, a group of young actors and actresses in their 20s joined Bai’s training camp to learn Kunqu’s skills. “The main actor practiced walking on knees until his knees were hurt, and the main actress wore out (磨坏) more than ten pairs of shoes during the training,” Bai said. “Finally, in 2006, the play triumphed across four University of California schools, with a full house at each show. Many students recommended the opera to their family and friends, and some began researching Kunqu’s history for their school projects.”
Recently, Bai opened a personal account (账号) online, where he shares his thoughts with over 95,000 fans. “I want to know what young people in China think about traditional culture and hear their voices,” said Bai. “We have entered the age of AI.

【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.D 5.B
2.第3段画线句“The idea of a child from a working-class family going to college was the very thing of storybooks.”意思是:工人阶级家庭的孩子上大学,简直就是故事书里才会有的事。这说明在当时看来,这对工人阶级家庭的孩子来说几乎是不可能的。
3.第6段中“I had a sense of responsibility and I shouldn’t let her down.”
5.全文围绕Miss McKenzie对作者的信任、帮助和影响展开,结尾称她为“my very own angel, Miss McKenzie”,明确表达了对这位老师的感激与怀念。因此作者写作的主要目的是表达对一位学校老师的感谢。
A.A family enjoys a quiet dinner without surfing the internet.
B.A company gives praise to workers for their continual efforts.
C.People set a long-term goal to exercise more for better health.
D.Students sign up for more classes because others are doing so.
2.What does the word“irrational” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.unreasonable. B.important. C.meaningful. D.beneficial.
3.Why does the writer mention the Stanford University experiment?
A.To show how people can wisely manage their money in competitions.
B.To prove that people are naturally good at avoiding financial losses.
C.To explain how competition can push people into making unwise decisions.
D.To explain why being the highest bidder is always a bad idea.
4.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.joining in competitions is a good way to show your value
B.it is wise to stop and think before joining in a competition
C.competition is important and always helps us move forward
D.following others is a safe way to avoid making wrong choices
5.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To compare research findings on over-competition.
B.To guide people to go for more successful achievements.
C.To encourage people to care less about their basic needs.
D.To advise readers to make choices that truly suit themselves.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.B 5.D

1.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To explain how to play the Tower of Hanoi.
B.To introduce a new world record set by an 8-year-old boy.
C.To tell readers the history of the Tower of Hanoi.
D.To show the importance of the Tower of Hanoi in science.
2.According to the rules of Tower of Hanoi, which of the following pictures shows the correct move?
A. B.
C. D.
3.The formula created by Edouard is used to know the ________.
A.fewest moves B.sizes of discs C.fewest discs D.speed of moves
4.According to the passage, what is required to solve a Tower of Hanoi puzzle?
A.Strong physical strength and speed.
B.Special tools and equipment (设备).
C.Knowledge of physics and mathematics.
D.The coordination (配合) of brain, eyes, and hands.
5.Why does the writer write the passage?
A.To show how popular Tower of Hanoi is.
B.To introduce the history of Tower of Hanoi.
C.To attract more people to play Tower of Hanoi.
D.To explain why Tower of Hanoi is widely used.

1.Why did the writer feel sad at first?
A.Because her son didn’t feel confident.
B.Because her son didn’t make the basketball team.
C.Because her son decided to stop playing basketball.
D.Because her son failed in a few basketball matches.
2.What does the underlined part “keep my own feelings in check” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Hide my own feeling. B.Hurt my own feeling.
C.Follow my own feeling. D.Show my own feeling.
3.What did the mother do after her son failed to make the team?
A.She called the coach to complain. B.She told her son it was unfair.
C.She encouraged him to keep trying. D.She advised him to give up basketball.
4.What can be inferred (推断) about the writer’s son?
A.He felt unhappy with his parents.
B.He stopped working on his basketball skills.
C.He played in a high school team at the age of 12.
D.He was finally accepted by his high school team.
5.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Best Basketball Player. B.Mother’s Love for Her Son.
C.Success Comes after Failure. D.The Importance of Teamwork.

In this fast-changing world, it is highly important for young people to value traditional Chinese culture. The base of Chinese culture must be strong to prevent it from being controlled by high technology.”

A.It came out by accident. B.It attracted young people.
C.It was a traditional art form. D.It invited well-known actors.
