I’m not a fan of patchwork quilts (拼布被子). Surprisingly, however, there is a small patchwork quilt in my home.
This quilt first belonged to my mother. She once joined a weekly book club with some women from the neighborhood. In fact, it was more of an excuse to get together and drink coffee. One of the ladies, Emily, made my mother a small quilt.
For years, this quilt sat folded (折叠的) in my mom’s living room. It went with her when she moved to a small room at an assisted living facility (辅助生活机构). I never saw my mother use it throughout all those years. During one of my visits, I asked her why she kept it. She said it was a gift from Emily. I questioned further, as she was not so close to Emily and did not even like the quilt’s design. Her response remained the same: “Because it was from Emily.”
After thinking this over for several days, I realized that the quilt’s value didn’t lie in its appearance or in its maker. It was special because it reminded my mom of being a good neighbor and caring for each other.
I inherited (继承) the quilt more than ten years ago and it has remained folded on a shelf ever since. My plan is to one day gift it to my daughter, and I hope she will keep it. Patchwork quilts carry stories. The tales we share about our experiences turn everyday things into something special.

34. What does the writer hope to do with the quilt in the future?
A. Use it every day. B. Pass it on to the writer’s child.
C. Give it back to Emily’s child. D. Gift it to a neighbor in need.
35. Which word might the writer use to describe the stories connected to things like patchwork quilts?
A. Boring. B. Common. C. Meaningful. D. Surprising.

Have you seen delivery workers (外卖员) riding their e-bikes quickly to bring food to customers? This is because if they are late, they usually have to pay a fine. But now, things are changing. The food delivery platforms Eleme and Meituan will no longer fine riders for being late.
Late-delivery fines have long driven fast delivery times, but they come at the cost of rider safety. Official reports showed that in one week in March 2025, Eleme and Meituan riders in Shanghai had more than 20,000 traffic violations (违章). The platforms’ systems charge for late orders by the second, without considering weather or road conditions. As a result, many riders run red lights just to avoid fines and earn money.
In late September, the government began asking for public opinions on new draft (草案) rules for the food delivery industry. The goal is to help delivery platforms set rules and improve service quality. The new rules also make it clear that platforms shouldn’t use fines as the main method to deal with late orders.
So, will our food still arrive on time when the fines are gone? The answer is yes. Eleme is testing a new points system that uses point cuts instead of fines to encourage better service. Meituan is also on board, using a similar system. After losing points, riders can get them back by being on time or joining training classes, which helps lower their stress, said China Logistics & Purchasing magazine.
36. Why did food delivery platforms decide to stop late-delivery fines?
A. To let riders earn more. B. To improve rider safety.
C. To draw more customers. D. To provide better service.
37. What problem did the government aim to solve with the new draft rules?
A. The poor quality of takeout food. B. The high cost of delivery services.
C. The platforms’ management issues. D. Too many traffic accidents.
38. How does the new points system help delivery riders?
A. They get more orders to deliver. B. They have more time for each delivery.
C. They can get more free training. D. They will feel less stressed.
39. What will probably happen to food delivery service in the future?
A. Many riders might lose their jobs. B. Delivery will take much longer.
C. The service will become better. D. The delivery prices will go up.
40. In which part of the newspaper can we find the passage?
A. Education B. People C. Culture & History D. Life

While surfing the internet, you might have seen videos of cats taking a shower. Most cats fight or look unhappy. Have you ever wondered why most cats don’t like water?
Evolution may be the first reason. Different from dogs, cats haven’t changed much over the past 10,000 years. They still act a lot like their ancestor (祖先), the African wildcat. “African wildcats are typically going to be hunting on land. So they didn’t really develop the habit of being in the water,” cat expert Kristyn Vitale told Popular Science. So it makes sense that today’s cats don’t jump into pools with much excitement.
Being wet may also influence cats’ senses. Jennifer Vonk, a cat expert from Oakland University, said that cats find being wet uncomfortable, and it can mess with their sense of smell. Water can hide a cat’s natural smell, making them upset. It may also bring new smells they don’t like, like the chemicals (化学物质) in tap water (自来水).
On the other hand, getting wet may throw off a cat’s balance (平衡). For example, whiskers (胡须) help cats explore their surroundings and find their way. When whiskers get wet, cats might not sense movements, Vitale explained.
“In general, cats do not need to be given a bath by their owners.” US professor Alison Diesel told VMBS News. She explained that cats can clean themselves. Taking showers may also cause trauma (精神创伤) to cats, which can influence the human-animal relationship.
41. What does “evolution” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. The whole food chain. B. The slow change of a species.
C. A change in the environment. D. The natural enemy of a species.
42. How does water upset cats?
A. It covers up their natural smell. B. It stops all of their senses from working.
C. The chemicals in the water make them sick. D. It makes them unable to smell things.
43. How can we help cats keep their balance, according to Vitale?
A. By throwing them up high. B. By keeping their whiskers dry.
C. By keeping them on the move. D. By showing them around a new place.
44. What advice does Alison Diesel give?
A. Don’t bathe cats. B. Keep cats’ living places clean.
C. Take a shower before holding cats. D. Stay close to cats to build a relationship.
45. What is the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

How do animals recognize (认出) human faces? This question was one of the research projects of Chinese-American scientist Doris Tsao. Tsao was named a MacArthur Fellow (麦克阿瑟奖)—one of the highest academic (学术的) honors in the US—in 2018 because of her findings.
Tsao’s team at the California Institute of Technology has been experimenting with monkeys. They found that there are about 200 nerve cells (神经细胞) in the monkeys’brains that help them recognize faces. Each cell can identify (识别) a different facial characteristic (面部特征), such as the shape of the face, the distance between the eyes or the color of the skin. With all of this information, monkeys can build a picture of a person’s face in their minds.
Through this study, the scientists discovered how monkeys “see” human faces in their minds. They showed the monkeys pictures of different human faces. At the same time, they recorded the activity of each nerve cell in the monkeys’ brains. Then, with the help of computer software, they studied this brain activity and recreated the faces that the monkeys “saw” in their minds.
When the photos that the monkeys looked at were placed side by side with the computer-created faces, they were very similar, the BBC reported.
Although the study was done on monkeys, scientists believe that human brains might recognize faces in a similar way.
This technology could also be used in the future. For example, the police might be able to recreate the face of a criminal by recording a witness’ (目击者的) brain activity, Tsao told the Daily Mail.
Doris Tsao’s research ____56____ monkeys
____57____

The experimental process
◆ Scientists showed the monkeys pictures of several different human faces and recorded the nerve ____58____ activities in the monkeys’ brains.
◆ They ____59____ computer software to study the monkeys’brain activity and recreated the faces the monkeys “saw” in their heads.

◆The cells can identify different facial ____62____ .
◆A monkey ____63____ a picture of a person’s face with the collected information.

I’m Emily from Class 10 Grade 9. It’s my great honor to share my special experience here.
Last summer, I decided to learn cooking by myself. At first, I made a mess in the kitchen and almost burned the food! But I didn’t give up. I followed recipes carefully and practiced again and again. Through this practice, I not only learned several dishes but also realized the importance of patience and perseverance. Every small success made me feel proud and more confident.
This experience showed me that trying new things helps us grow. I wish to keep exploring, learning practical skills, and becoming a more independent and helpful person in the future.
Thank you.
